Na'u is not pronunced "nau", but "nah-oo". The pauses indicated by apostrophes are important on hawaiian languages.

Reminds me of a story I once read in an anthology of Irish folklore. A man and his wife built their house on top of a fairy path. So every night, the fairies would walk through their kitchen, making a ruckus as they went. Be careful where you build and how you build it.

The admonition at the end to know whose land you’re on reminds me of something I read about how the Romans would adopt local gods in new territories, and that the “unknown god” temples might have also served the purpose of covering their bases by including any lost gods they hadn’t heard about.

The Hindus also have an unknown god that they worship and is shown by an empty space in registers of gods in some temples. The Egyptian god Amon also his name means literally "the hidden one".

What the soldier experienced was a form of Sleep paralysis. Its terrifying to experience. I had it once and I legit thought I was going to die. Not able to call for help, move, or make a sound. With the feeling that that my lungs stopped and my heart beat in a panic. I layed there in a half daze, desperate to move any part of my body. Once I finally could move. I flung into an upright position. It mostly happens when you have sleeping disorders but can happen to anyone and stress or sleep deprivation can cause it too. Given it was ww1, those men most likely were lacking sleep.

I've heard about this, there is also something similar, or possibly the same myth, where on the trail near the final battle for Oahu at Nu' uanu, they see similar lights and soldiers there from those who fell in the final battle. Then again it has been like a decade since I heard this story, so I may have mixed up some facts.

Local who lived in Hawaii here. Left the islands as a kid, but came back for university. The first thing my local and Hawaiian friends would talk about when we first hung out were the NightMarchers and what you were supposed to do. These were our ghost stories

I use to hear about this back in grade school, when our teachers would tell a ghost story or two for certain classes. One advice I think I remember was to not sleep in path of your door, lest you find yourself blocking the way of the nightmarchers.

yeah, so its pretty normal for cultures to attribute complex environmental events as having a spiritual origin, especially when volcanoes are involved (there's a really cool theory about how the biblical plagues line up really well with a subterranean eruption releasing volcanic gas plumes). This is most likely another case; the signs are all here. Hawai'i has many volcanic vents on the Big Island and you really should steer clear of these fumes: the CO2 and H2S are more than capable of smothering you if you don't ventilate properly. Volcanic gases are hot but heavy and will flow down the mountain towards the sea, so it's more than just a superstition to make sure you dont route that gas through your house if you like breathing. I've never been connected much with my ancestry, but it's always cool to see how myths tend to have some really valid advice (if a bit personified).

There were two generals stationed at Pearl Harbor in Oahu. And they were friends of John F Kennedy and after he passed away they spoke with his wife Jackie Onassis Kennedy and the fire marchers were the idea for the eternal flame by the way. A soldier that will never die

Given the high amount of volcanic activity around Hawaii, it doesn't surprise me that something like this happens. It is quite possible that a drifting cloud of volcanic gasses caused this pressure and the oxygen deprivation caused the sight of feet floating past. But I do quite like the ancient warriors explanation.

It's very similar to the Fairies in Ireland, if your out at night and you hear the fairies about go back to where you were at because they'd take you away to never be seen again or torment you into insanity.

It sounds like a way to explain the effects of volcanic gasses coming off the mountain. Especially about the doors facing both the mountain and the sea since that would create an easy path for heavy gasses to enter a building and push other gasses out.

You might also be interested of Finnish folklore, where many things seeming magical are forged instead of magicked into being, including a mill that would create wealth, not through luck but by producing flour, gold and salt by mechanical milling process. A thing resembling more an automated factory than magic to modern reader. Also the idea that a tree reaching all the way to sky, and a man the size of a thumb are both "medium size" reminds us so clearly of the true sizes in the world, the small of atoms and particles, and the large of the solar systems and galaxies.

I've only a passing knowledge of this sort of things, but it comes from the mountains (volcanos?), it is heavier than air so it'd drift along the ground, and it would cause a lot of the sensations described in this video (tightness and difficulty breathing). Or if not sulfuric gas, some similar heavier than air gas passing through. Always thought it's interesting to ponder what observable phenomena today could have inspired myths like these.
