Maui may be a bit of a trickster god, but at heart, he's a good demigod! Look at everything he's done for humanity (and a little bit to show off). He lasso'd the sun to make the days longer, discovered how to make fire from the hens, and even brought in the biggest catch that ever was: A whole island chain. I mean, what can we say except thank you?

in the New Zealand version of the fishing myth, he does pull up a giant fish (creating the North Island). This fish is so large, that it capsizes their canoe, making the South Island. Then his brothers - being jealous and surprised - instantly start hacking up the fish with their clubs and knives, creating the mountains and valleys. It’s interesting how each place tells a different version!

@wiremutetekura5484
@wiremutetekura5484 Жыл бұрын
@@wren_. Not me not noticing this 2 years later... less thigh crushing, but its better trust me! So Hinenuitepō, death goddess. Maui, genius that he is, decides to reverse birth himself in the death goddess so he can become immortal (makes sense?). So he transforms into a worm, and crawls into her (look im very comfortable saying this but i dont think YT will let me). Depending on the story, a Pīwakawaka (fantail/type of bird), who is either a shapeshifted brother or friend, etc, starting laughing his ass off. The chirping is loud enough, SHE WAKES UP. Big mistake Maui! Obsidian teeth grow from the walls of her womb and eat him ALIVE!!!! (fun fact: this is why a Pīwakawaka flying into your home represents someone dying, this happened a lot for me in 2020, wonder why). So ends the physical life of Maui, he then transcends and becomes ones with the world and the gods (which is the most horrid oversimplification ever). There is the requested elaboration, incredibly over simplified, from a Māori girly. Moral: don't go putting yourself into women without permission and consent men!

You guys know the story of how he died in Māori myth? He tried to... do something very unsavoury that starts with "R" and rhymes with "Grape" to the underworld goddess Hine-Nui-Te-Po, supposedly in order to rob her of her powers over life and death. However, she awoke in the act, and she either crushed him between her thighs or *chewed him to death with obsidian teeth in her vag.* Metal.

I appreciate the fact that a specific country or island isn't called out especially for the fishing for the islands story since this mythology is found all over the Pacific. While I've heard different and more in depth tellings growing up the spirit of the story is well maintained in this brief video. Also in New Zealand we have a dolphin called Māui dolphin named after the Māori name for the North Island, Te Ika-a-Māui, which means The Fish of Māui.

Fun fact - in the original Maori, the Disney song's line of 'What can I say except 'You're welcome'?' was written as 'Mihi mai ra' - which is a very rude and self-aggrandizing way of accepting thanks. More akin to saying 'you may now lavish me with praise' than anything else. Seems in-character.

I'm not sure about Proto-/Austronesian/ myth; yet! It's easier to establish proto-Pacific-Islander myth narratives; the island ecologies esp. help bring them together But there are important issues to tackle in the Malay world, the other half of Austronesian peoples, where I'm from. A lot of our peoples don't live like islanders. Many ethnic groups live in forests, mountains, and rural plains. Also, many of us had our Austronesian heritage surpressed by Abrahamic religions: Islam in Indo-Malaysia and Christianity in the Philippines But looking at the myths, magic system, and social hierarchies of my own ethnic group, I do see key similarities with Pacific Islanders ❤

Havw you thought about doing a series on Maui with the different variations. Such as Maui in Maori Mythology, or Tongan, Tahitian, Samoan or Mangarevan. As each have different tales and sometimes completely different people. Would be interesting to showcase the other cultures.

*hearing about the sun story* But Maui beat the sun with a jawbone. *hearing about the fire story* You do realize he disfigured that bird’s beak. *Hearing the island story* I think he lost the hook after that and it became a constellation.

After giving humans fire, longer days and more islands, surely Maui deserves a promotion from Demigod to God.

Maui catching the sun sounds bit like the Japanese sun goddess sealing herself in a cave and the other gods throwing a party to lure her out. Incidentally, there are some claims that the Japanese are distantly related to the Polynesians, but the jury is not at all out on that.
