In this video I drove down the San Diego Coast, first to Del Mar California, to photograph some photos with my Nikon 28-105mm lens. Then I went to La Jolla cove, to see what I could find. Here I will show you why this is my favorite lens and if you wait to the end you will see some barktastic sea life! I use my Nikon D7000 with this lens and think its a great combo.
Disclosure: I am not sponsored by Nikon and they did not pay me to say anything about this lens.

I have the 28-105 as well and it's a great lens. Mine lives on my D700, but I also enjoy it on my D7000 and film cameras. The lens was introduced in 1999 and was shipped usually in a package deal with the Nikon F100. I prefer this lens to any of the AF-S midrange zooms, because I've had the expensive "pleasure" of having to pay to replace more than one AF-S focus motor. This lens, as a screw-drive, has no motor in it to break. The macro feature of the lens is quite useful as well. But it has an odd quirk, Many people think their lens is broken because once they have gone into Macro mode, they can't get out. The lens seems stuck. This particular lens has to be focused past about two feet before you can exit Macro and go back to normal. When I finish shooting in Macro, I just point it across the room and focus on something and then I can exit to regular shooting. This is the way the lens is designed but since hardly any of them still have their instruction sheets, most people don't know about this. This lens is a very well kept secret but there are two others you might want to try. First, if you ever want to carry a smaller lens with very similar performance, check out the 28-70 f3.4-4.5 AF-D. This was the lens they shipped on the F100 before the 28-105. It uses 52 mm filters and is smaller and lighter. I've seen some really nice copies coming in from Japan lately for well under $100. You don't actually need it since you have the 28-105, but it is good if you want to travel lighter. Finally a "must have" AF-D lens is the 70-210 f4 AF-D constant aperture zoom. It uses the same filters as the 28-105. Do not confuse it with the much more common 70-210 f4-5.6 which is a push-pull zoom. The F4 model is a 2-ring zoom and was only made for 18 months in 1988-89. It has the same quality of construction as the 28-105. Nikon discontinued it because it was cutting into sales of their F2.8 pro zooms. I had one of those, and sold it because once I got the 70-210 F4, I never wanted to use it outside the studio because it was huge. The F4 version also makes a great portrait lens. A clean one is only about $100. Beautiful scenery you have out there. You got a couple of really nice shots. Good work.

Hi Tom, Yes for the first part, the lens is an excellent lens. I am so very happy I have one. It is a lens I had been wanting for many years. The Macro feature gets stuck for me too, but have learned the little trick for unlocking that mode. It doesn't bother me too much. As far as the the 28-70mm I have actually had the pleasure of using that lens, it is much lighter and is a great little performer. I haven't been able to find a good copy of the 70-210 F4. That's a hard lens to find, I just haven't had much luck. Thank you so much Tom! I really appreciate it! Hope all is well!

@@Kris_World I'm not bothered at all by the Macro "quirk" of the 28-105. And honestly, the Macro feature of the lens is so darned useful that having this lens keeps me from needing a dedicated Macro lens for no more close-up work than I do. So once you learn how to unlock it, this lens is great for that. Nikon fully explained it in the instructions, but few instruction sheets survive today with the used lens. As for the 70-210 f4, I like it so well that whenever I see one pop up at a good price on eBay, I buy it. I just looked and see about six of them listed on that auction site. The problem is that when you search for it, all manner of other lenses pop up as well. The f4 has a distinctive appearance which makes it easy to spot. It isn't a pretty lens but it makes pretty images. I have four of them (not sure why that happened) and they all work wonderfully. Of the ones listed todya, they all range from $80-$120 which is unbeatable. The one at $120 is from KEH Outlet which means you get hassle free returns and a six month warranty, definitely worth the difference in my opinion. I have also found that the cleanest used Nikkors with the most accurate descriptions, outside of KEH or Roberts Camera come from sellers in Japan. I definitely find lenses from them safer to buy than from American private parties who get lenses from estate sales, and wouldn't know fungus or balsam separation in a lens if it bit them on the ass. If tomorrow I was forced to sell all of my lenses, I could happily live, and make a living with just the 28-105, and the 70-210 f4. It is also worth noting that if you like manual focus, Nikon made a 70-210 f4 Series E, which is exactly the same optical formula and is an excellent lens. It sells used for $25-$50. By the way, I have checked out some of your other videos since I saw the first one on the 28-105. Good stuff!

Hi Tom! I agree with you. It's like having two lenses in one and not having to change to another lens is a bonus feature. The 70-210 F/4 must be a great lens if you have bought that many. If I see a good copy I just might have to buy it. I have been looking at the old 80-200 lenses because they are tack sharp. But this might be a better way to go. I actually haven't bought anything yet from KEH yet. I found my 28-105 on ebay from a seller with 100% feedback, who only sells camera equipment. They have been an up and running store for quite some time. I wouldn't trust lenses from estate sales either. I am sure the dealers don't know much about what they selling. They see something valuable and think dollar signs. Having those two lenses is probably all you need. I'll have to look up that lens. I am not too fond of manual lenses. I think the version you have sounds better to me. Thank you so very much for checking out my other videos. It truly means a lot to me and helps me grow as a KZfaq creator. I am happy you enjoyed the videos. Thank you for the kind comment!

I have this lens I used it for videos on the Nikon D5100 but 3 months ago I got a d7000 and the combo is really perfect , I photographed weddings , birthdays and church events and it did very well with the d7000 's focus engine , I do not sell this lens easily because even though it is dark she is still very versatile for all the styles I photograph congratulations on the video bro success always watching from Brazil

@gcabreirafotografia1198 Thank you so much for checking out my video. The 28-105mm is defiantly one of my favorite lenses. I find myself using it like about 80 percent of time. I see that you have found that it is a very capable lens as well. That's so cool that you can use it for that kind of photography. I bet the images are amazing. Thank you for watching! Hope all is well! Kris

Although it can auto focus, I use this lens on D7000 manual focus,. As I can control the bokeh which is round and nice. Color is just better than modern crap. This is actually a super versaltile les, you can have wide, low tele and macro in one lens at an above average sharpness and quality, that is insane.

@raymondchan3587 I agree the color that comes out of his lens is much better than some of the modern day lenses out there. It is an old lens, not expensive and gives the user some really amazing results. For how old this lens is, Nikon gave us a good one. I love the Macro feature. Its just a perfect lens to always have on your camera. Thank you so much for watching. Hope all is well. Kris

Could you tell me if there is any neccesary to change it to 24-120f4G for a wider lens range? Thank you!
@Kris_World

@user-zt5rj4mx1d Hi, well unfortunately I don't own that lens, but I would say if you are using a 28-105mm on a crop sensor then the 105 will actually be a little longer than on a full frame sensor. The 28-105 also is a faster lens. So I would say that you are probably good. It's really a matter of preference. From my experience the 28-105mm is an amazing lens. Now say you wanted to get into the 200-300mm range then I would look into something like an 18-200mm VR or VRII or a 18-300mm. They are both supposed to be really great lenses. I hope this helps. I had a few copies on a D90 and on the D700. I would actually suggest this lens for APS-C. On ff, it creates some weird wignetting. It's not as useful at the wide angle, but you won't see the imperfections on crop. Plus, on crop it goes beyond 1:2 macro, at least perceptually.

@mladen5016 Thank you for sharing your experience with this lens. It's defiantly valuable info for others thinking about getting this to add to their assortment. I'll have to look into the vignette at the wide end on my D700. I have always gotten fantastic pics with this lens on the Nikon D7000. So we shall see how it performs. Sorry for the late response. I hope all is well. Kris

@@Kris_World No problem, mate. The vignetting is actually at macro setting on 105mm, which I find quite odd. Great performing lens, regardless of faults. Cheers!
