He made me buy that army bag he always carries around to hold the book. It's a French WWII ammunition bag, and I had to buy one just like that just because of this film.

He did! Veteran actor Brian Cox just published a memoir of sorts, and he took a shot at Johnny, saying he "is so overblown, so overrated". Brian did go on to say that Johnny does have terrific talent and has had great performances, still...thinking like that bums me out. Just because Johnny has been in some big franchises, it doesn't take away from moments like this. His character in this film is beautiful.

One of his best performance during the absolute peak of his career. He made a long stretch of one great movie after another starting with Ed Wood.

When Corso shoots Balkan, that is not mercy but the in-movie depiction of the engraving with the text "ditesco mori" or loosely "to grow rich through death". No one in the world knows where Balkan is at that point, so Corso gets to walk away with all the LCF engravings and could still go to New York to cash the check before attempting the ritual. Of course, by now money is irrelevant to Corso.

I see passion in the character Curso. He is so passionate that he doesn't care much about his appearance (looking a lot like the TV detective Columbo), his apartment, his food, what others think of him, or having friends. Smoking and drinking seem to only add to his steely focus on his passion. I suspect it is this quality that made "the darker powers" select him for the 9th Gate enlightenment. Thanks for the vid

I see Corso as cognizant, alert and indifferent. His passions are books and vices, that is until he begins to covet the knowledge being sought after by Balkin. He is the perfect pawn for the supernatural forces at play.

The books together open a gateway, and were destroyed. So did multiple people before enter, or was Dean the only one? Was he destined? The book binder(s) and girl appeared in the books, so were probably guardians. I want the theory to be that the devil wrote the books for himself to come back to hell after he takes human form. And Dean was him.. reincarnated or amnesia, but chose a life subconsciously to find those books.

The sun in that scene and the light depicted in the real ninth engraving is an eight-pointed star, the Star of Inanna, the Sumerian "Lady of Heaven", and is associated with the planet Venus. All ancient cultures tracked Venus in the night sky, which is often the first "star" seen in the evening or the last one to remain visible in the morning, hence it becomes "the bright morning star" and in later traditions Venus became symbolically linked with another "bright morning star", the "lux ifer" or "bringer of light" himself.

Thank you for the analysis. I do think that, while interesting, your conclusion is incorrect. I don’t think the trope of the seven deadly sins applies here. So Rather than Corso giving up gluttony or greed- in short, becoming a better person- I think the story has him becoming a worse person. That is the significance of him beating the man with the shoe. The “girl,” as she is called, stands by smiling, impressed!because she is an immoral character. (we learned this about her on the plane when she demonstrates total apathy at Fargas’s death). Corso has essentially won the admiration of an evil demon . She even makes love to Corso at the end, as demon to demon, mutating her face, while she is on top of him in a kind of horror show to delight him. You’re surely right that Corso’s killing of Balkan is an act of mercy, but Corso was there not to stop Balkan from doing evil, but to replace him as the evildoer, to usurp Balkin’s quest to commune with the devil. Anyhow, that is my interpretation. Thank you again for sharing yours, which I found interesting and inspiring.

Was it an act of mercy, though? Remember where Balkan is headed. Being on fire would presumably pale in comparison to what awaits him on the other side. Neat trick to play on the audience though, because it *looks* like an act of mercy, but clearly it isn't. Another take is Corso was simply proving to himself that he could pull the trigger, which he failed to do when he had Balkan dead to rights, just prior to Balkan literally stomping him into the ground. Or maybe he was just sick of the sound of Balkan's voice -- a character who never shut up, and clearly was in love with the sound of his own voice. He'd had enough of it, so he silenced him.

Greetings! I very much like your channel and appreciate that we share a passion for similar movies, this being no exception. I have a question that is hanging in my mind. Why did Lucifer choose Corso and not Balkan. To my mind Balkan would have been the best candidate? And i would interpret the scene where the girl leaves Corso the hint that the last book is a forgery as Lucifer's personal involvement, favoring him out of all of them

I've been reading The Club Dumas novel and in just a few pages I noticed several sentences that made me think of Eyes Wide Shut. Of course, the novel was first. I think these movie makers and novelists might be in secret covens together the whole time.
