Today, we'll take a look at a great little rechargeable pocket light, with a big old achilles heel, the Nitecore Tip.

I guess I have an older model because mine has a lock out mode when I simultaneously press both buttons and it flashes real quick to show that it’s locked. Although it is a bit of a pain when it’s locked out and I need it immediately. Just an extra step, but I’ve had mine on my keys for the past year and I love it.

I've been carrying this light on my key chain for the past year and love it. I don't use the clip which puts the light on the larger side for something on a keychain but its so useful I won't be taking it off till it breaks. I use the 30 auto-off mode due to the lack of a lockout mode which initially worried me but it has never once drained the battery so much that it caused even the slightest problem. Overall I love the light, the brightness, durability and easy of charging makes it the perfect fit for me.

I have it's little brother. The Tini same problem with lockout. Though honestly I almost never use that feature on any flashlight so it doesn't bother me that much. Great light for the money and size.

This is my EDC flashlight. I run maintenance and i keep this guy on my big key ring. It's been extremely reliable for me but yes it does sometimes turn on when i bump into things. Other than that I've been very impressed with the durability and brightness of this one compared to a few other I've tried in the past.

I love mine. Great for my work keychain. Low light for searching around. Bright enough to use in a pinch for my big light. Wish the buttons were two diff sizes though.

I’ve had two fail after a few months. Of use and being carried on a key chains. Had the same issue with the tube. Was great while it worked, but I’m prob a little rough on keys.

Damn, I was really looking at this light, but with out a lockout mode it just wouldn't work for me. Thanks for the review, I too am hoping they get their act together.

My biggest ugly with Nitecore is their warranty policies. When I contacted them for warranty service they told me I had to ship the TIP to them in China. This makes their warranty cost prohibitive since the shipping cost would be close to the cost of the light. Other Chinese companies like ThruNite have local shipping points in many countries, so I avoid Nitecore now.

Agree on this one too. So close. My coin pocket is the favorite way to carry a light. No lockout is a deal breaker for me.

There's a high-CRI model too, which I would definitely get over the base model. The trouble with the lockout on the early version is that it would drain the battery quickly while locked out, but not while in regular off. Instead of fixing that, they went to a 30 second timer.

I have an older version that has the lockout mode. I've noticed that in lockout mode the battery drains for some reason. Strange things I tell ya.
@briangeiger6153

Why did they do away with the lockout mode that was on there? I have the older version and the lockout works just fine. I carry it everyday and have no problems with it turning on, and it's easy to switch out of lockout mode.

I'm glad mine does lockout. You're right, they should have left that feature. They do make a stainless steel version for 35.00. I got my mom and fiance the Tini for Christmas last year. They really like them.

I got the earlier version when I ordered the newer version. Guess I got the better deal. Though just an FYI the lockout on mine still fails due to pocket clutter. If you carry a slip joint or multi tool it can still go off.

I have never owned a flashlight decent enough to have a lock out ,so it won't bother me.Set it at it's lowest so it won't drain the battery even if it turns on.

The Nitecore Tip is my current favourite -- my problem with the clip is that I keep losing/breaking them (I order 4 at a time and need to order more). I use the clip to protect the switches, not for a clip. I work in theatre, and the combination of size and different brightness settings, it's great. I have one on my lanyard, and another in the watch pocket of my jeans.

You hit the nail on the head! I have 3, one of the older with the lockout mode on a keychain and 2 "newer" with the clips that I just took off immediately. One is on a keychain as well and yes it does occasionally light up my life, and my pants. Great lights but I do really miss the lockout on the new ones. BTW, there is also a CRI version for better color rendition, this goes in my hunting bag in case I have to trail something at night.
@wolf9545

Does the CRI version have a lockout mode? I want a small flashlight that I can keep in my pocket and carry around. I like the idea of this flashlight because it seems like it won't be huge in my pocket.
@davidbrasfield6357
@davidbrasfield6357 5 жыл бұрын
@@wolf9545 Unfortunately no, it does have the clip which covers the switches and hasn't been a problem in a pack, but doesn't lock out. I do like the ability to clip it to a cap when tracking at night... I do use the one with the lockout as a minimal EDC, esp in the watch pocket of jeans. Maybe they will learn and add it back in this year.

I got the prior version with the lockout and it is perfect. I guess they figured the clip was the lockout which mine did not come with. I put it on my keychain so I never needed the clip anyway. Mine is also metal as it is scratched to hell from my keys and there is definitely metal.

Nick, need to consider the Nitecore Tini... Half the size makes better for actually keychain, 380 lumens instead of 360 of the TIP. Kind of lockout mode in that the power on button needs to be pressed for 2 seconds preventing accidential tap of power from turning light on. And the same price point of $30. Edit... Bought several TIPs last Christmas as gifts, over time 2 of the lights had issue with rubber power button coming out of the case, then using a tool to stuff back under the case. I like this light, but considering changing flashlight technology this is good for 2 years or less of usage. My MecArmy SNG3 160 lumens has been going strong for about 3 years, and has a more durable case than the TIP.

nice video. i was undecided between this and the Ravyvon. Ill go for the ravyvon. its about the same price and i dont buy flashlights that are not water resistant. Only because of my job.

Been carring this light for a few months because its powerful in a small package but have to agree it drives me crazy when it shuts off after 30 seconds. Also the no lockout is a dealbuster. Nick, theyve got one called the tiny (I think) check it out and tell us if they fixed it. Thanks, Harry

Hold both buttons down until it quickly blinks once and it won't turn off after 30 seconds. You had it in daily mode. The other mode is called constant on mode. Hope this helps

Personally I find on board USB recharging, or more specifically integrated rechargeable batteries, to be generally a negavite. I don't like not being able to change the battery out when inevitably its performance starts to degrade. I would much rather have a light that takes standard AAs and whatever the rechargeable lithium battery equivalent is. Yeah it's an extra step to recharge, but I can easily make sure I have a battery in good condition or can just slap in a standard AA when I need to. Great review as always

"if the button gets tapped it's just gonna drain itself in your pocket and you're not even gonna know." Not exactly. If that happens, it gets HOT in your pocket. Ask me how I know. Go on. Ask me. Notwithstanding the flaw, it remains my favorite keychain light. I put the clip over it and haven't had that problem since.

You need to be more manly in your reviews. 😂🤣😁 Actually you nailed this. Great light, except you can't carry it because it has no lockout mode. Even if that piece of crap clip did keep it from turning on, who wants to physically move a clip out of the way every time they want to use the flashlight? It's like the nitecore engineers don't actually use flashlights.
