He's something of a legendary footballer, one of the best defensive midfielders in the world for a number of years but because he's so lowkey, people forget. It's crazy to think he was on only £500 a week before moving to Dortmund.
@liquidswords9540Ай бұрын
Tbf his managerial career probably doesn’t help perceptions nowadays either, as a 19 year old I’ve grown up knowing him for his stints at Villa or Ipswich which weren’t exactly riveting so given how understated he was in his playing career that’s probably overshadowed his achievements in the 90s
@leannecampbell4551Ай бұрын
@@liquidswords9540 Garbage! Lambert achieved more than Villa and Ipswich combined! 😂Anything he done in Management will never overshadow what he achieved on the field. Well seeing your English 🤣 Clueless!

Gers fan here: Lambert was a quality player, and his success abroad made him excellent. Quite a few of the best Scots of this period went abroad and came back much better: thinking of John Collins, Mo Johnston, etc. It should have been a wake-up call for our game.

Mark McGee, Murdo McLeod et al. It tells you we ruin our players. Coaching is appalling in Scotland.

As a Scottish football fan I’m happy to see our best young guys head over to places like Italy, they develop so much more than going to the two big clubs and sitting behind imports and not developing. It’s better for our national team

It’s guid to see the likes of Ferguson and Doig doing well in Serie A, after the relative success of Hickey there as well. Hopefully younger Scots players are looking at that…

Wow this takes me back. A couple of years before he joined st mirren, there was a fire in his family home in linwood and he was moved in next door to me in cairn drive. He used to come out and pass the ball about with all us youngsters in the front garden. When he moved out i forgot about him until i was collecting panini football stickers and got his one for the st mirren team. I followed his whole career, even at celtic considering i’m a rangers supporter. 😂

Alan Shields Hamilton South Lanarkshire Scotland. I am originally from Elderslie next to Paisley in Renfrewshire. When Paul Lambert was with Saint Mirren, my uncle Tommy was Paul Lambert's driving instructor. I remember The Champions League Final of the 96/97 season both Borussia Dortmund & Juventus had some teams back them. I think all of Scotland was, despite to see Paul Lambert lift that Champions League trophy that night. Hand on heart I can say this I expected Juventus to be Champions they looked on paper like they had more quality but in the end Borussia Dortmund did it. And I think all of Scotland cheered that nigh as we seen one of our own lift that European Cup it will live long in my memory personally. Paul Lambert was some player myb not a flash Harry but he always did what he was asked to do well apart from when Dick Advocaat wanted him to be his right back at P.S.V then during that trial his agent turns up & tells him Borussia Dortmund want to sign him with his agent Paul races to Dortmund the rest is history.

Kree was a striking figure, but I had completely forgotten about him until just now (kein Schwarzgelber). Bloody hell, I watched Motherwell play Dortmund back then, as Motherwell is the twin town of my own home town, so I immediately knew who Paul Lambert was, when he joined BVB. Because of the twinning, it has always been Motherwell and St. Johnstone for me in Scottish football. Never liked the Old Firm.
