I had the Nokia 5130 expressmusic, also in red and black back then. It was my favourite phone for a long time, because the music buttons were so freaking handy. It was perfect for me, since I didn't want an mp3 player AND a phone, and that combined them perfectly. But seeing it "remade" into such a clunky and generally bad thing, is kinda sad

@@peterclarke7240 The hardware wasn't really the letdown here. It's the same as any $40 TracFone you can buy at a gas station. The operating system cutting off a huge chunk of software was the sledgehammer to the kneecaps for this thing.
@peterclarke7240
@peterclarke7240 Жыл бұрын
@@VulpesHilarianus I know- my point was there's a reason why none of the big names do this, even though it's a fairly obvious idea- You're sacrificing space in a phone that could better be used with practically anything else, particularly at this price point, and you're relying on either your earbuds being good enough or easily replaced with third-party products when they inevitably break or get lost. It's a silly gimmick, essentially, and we're quite a long way past the wild west days of silly gimmicks in mobile phones. Put this phone up against any other similarly priced phone and it'll probably lose, because earbuds are relatively cheap and a dead easy after market thing to install, whereas a semi-decent camera, or a bit more memory, are things outside the skill of most normal people to mod.
@VulpesHilarianus
@VulpesHilarianus Жыл бұрын
@@peterclarke7240 I think the real problem is that Nokia's so close to actually getting it right, but they're still stuck in 2005 mentally. Imagine a phone with the classic keypad layout and a touch pad in the center between the call and end call buttons that doubles as the traditional button. Pair that with modern Android and you've got a phone that a lot of people will use. There's a market of unknown but theoretically big enough size made up of people who don't want the features of a smartphone because they don't use them, but want access to things like, as Dank stated, Spotify, KZfaq, and Snapchat. Nokia sticking with Symbian 20 is absolutely wrecking their ability to actually sell the phones, because the market of people who want a straight feature phone is too small.

Holy crap! I had a 3205!! (Same as the 3200 but CDMA). That thing was actually indestructible. It fell multiple storeys onto concrete and was totally perfect. It had a torch built in and was super tiny. I actually still have it despite it being utterly pointless now. I didn't keep the next and final Nokia that I had after that.

I feel so bad for convincing my dad to get the new 3310, I had faith in Nokia and he needed a modern brick. Sadly it died way too soon, and it was clearly just a shadow of the original :'( Now he uses an alcatel I found for less than a dollar in a flea market, that I bought for myself to use it as an MP3 player lmao, he's so happy with it, it was totally worth it And this one seemed fine enough for me to get, and I'm glad I waited until your video (yes I was expecting your opinion before trying this lol). You saved me quite some money, so thank you Dankpods :D Edit: that version of Snake is just ugly! lol

@dankpods just a note, the snake style of movement can be changed in the app settings, I too prefer the right angle way. Also the 3310 3g was my first phone so it'll always have a place in my heart. Also I played or tried around 200 2000's games on it by installing with the java JAR files.

I have a Nokia E90 communicator from like 2007 and it fares pretty good for its age. it can connect to wifi so it can still access modern internet (apart from the web browser not supporting web 2.0) it even has flash player and it supports micro SDs, something that modern smartphones struggle to do. Nokia just isn't what it used to be

I didn’t even know Nokia still existed. My second ever phone was a Nokia 5730 XpressMusic. It did everything! Dedicated music buttons, N-Gage capability, full keyboard even! I didn’t have any friends to text but I mean that’s besides the point.

My last Nokia was an N95 with 3G - I used to run the winamp server on my PC at home and have the winamp app on the phone so I could stream my music from the PC. It worked, just about, if you had full signal. After that i had a few windows mobile PDA type phones, then an iPhone 3G and all iPhones since then. My first mobile internet setup was a Psion series 5 PDA and Nokia 7110 'Matrix' phone with the cool slide down cover. You had to line up the infra-red ports to get data. The screen was black and white and it was super slow but I did manage to look at Auto Trader from inside a car, and that felt so cool at the time.

I really liked the old Nokia design, and than when they introduced flip phones I loved those. Miss my old Razr, it was even washed once and it still worked after drying. I even went from HTC touch with slide out keyboard to flip Blackberry, but that one lasted only a year because the battery kept getting hot and it damaged some things (it even made my custom made blue phone case lose its color)

Honestly, I'd be more than willing to deal with a chonky phone. If it had built in buds, good padding/protection, decent specs (I game a lot with my phone) and a big battery.. like if you've ever seen the energizer phone. Sacrifice a bit of that massive batt in place for buds and boom! It's humongous yes.. but I could deal.

In the mid 2000's there was this huge battle between Nokia and Sony Ericsson about who has the best MP3 player phone. They extended this into the smartphone era, with Nokia WIndows Phones being like a Zune Touch and Xperia phones have good DAC's and player software in them. None of them won, but i do still use my Nokia WIndows 8.1 Phone, because i don't use any apps. It's my work phone. It just needs to do calls, text and play music.

@@vadnegru As far as I know, Sony Xperias are the last remaining flagships with headphone jacks and micro SD slots in 2022 (the main reason why I now have an Xperia 1 iv). Some gaming phones still have headphone jacks, but they never have SD slots (except for the Razer phones 1 and 2, but those didn't have a headphone jack).

A few years ago I bought some refurbished Samsung Rugby phones on eBay. I wanted a basic phone badly. I found that the camera on my smartphone was the thing I missed the most. I used it for camping and hiking as the battery last days. I still have one without a SIM card in my glove box as a 911 phone. The experience made me realize that modern smartphones are actually minimalist. A good camera and communicator all combined. I have an iPhone 12 mini now which is great. The new sound profiles on iOS help with distractions.

This reminds me of a lot of other products, the ones that come to mind are the Sony Betamax VCRs with the inbuilt amplifier ("Beta Hi-Fi Theatre") and the SL-HF-8xx units with the digital trick play features, but there are countless others, where some really interesting feature will exist only on a particular model in a not-necessarily high-end bracket.
