other than a day trip to canada, i haven't been out of the usa either, unless one counts hawaii as a sort of foreign nation. i have, however, been to several states all over the nation and lived in a few of them for months or years. i read a lot, though, and read translated books from foreign writers, so i do have some knowledge, not experience, of the differences in life in other places. i think marty has probably never really been out of his own state or comfort zone, EVER before.

Petrarch was also a devout Christian. www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Petrarch Humanism has some diversity to its thought, and has some subgroups. As an example, Petrarch saw faith and the realization of human potential as being able to merge. There are other groups within humanism that may disagree, but as stated there is some diversity.

Kram Narpak A lot of early humanists were not Christian too. It's not like humanitarian efforts never came along until Christianity. The point many are saying is that one does not need religion to be a humanitarian or to have a strong moral compass. Too many people think the only way you could have a civilized society is through the governance of religion. It's not true. Society is completely capable of being moral and civil without religion being in the equation.

Evolution is no more than a theory. No scientist has ever said otherwise, as proof has never been scientific documented. That said, many believes it being proofed, as that is what schools and high schools are teaching. It doesn’t make it right because some says it’s true, as scientists says it’s an unproven theory.
@RuleofFive
@RuleofFive 2 жыл бұрын
@@johannesnielsenjohnbates8889 You don't understand what a scientific theory is. It's not a hunch or guess. An untested assertion in science is called a hypothesis. After testing, researching and peer review a successful hypothesis is a scientific theory. BTW theories never become scientific laws. They are two different things. The law describes the phenomenon like...the apple always falls to the earth after it comes off the tree. The theory tells us why it always falls to the earth. There are millions of data points to support evolution through natural selection and random mutation: fossil record, geological column, comparative anatomy, bio-diversity, DNA, the human genome. There is almost as much evidence for evolution as there is for gravity. We're the fifth ape. It's okay.
@RuleofFive
@RuleofFive Жыл бұрын
@Angelina Vaskova The scientific theory of evolution is the best explanation we have about the diversity of life on earth. There are millions of data points to support evolution. Evolution is the basis for biology. If this scientific theory gets displaced by a better explanation it will be because there was more data and research to knock it down not because a religious group wanted "intelligent design" (Adam & Eve) to be taught in the science classroom alongside evolution. Yes being a critical thinker is important and so is understanding that in the US acceptance of evolution is just above the halfway mark. What that means is almost half of the 330 million Americans believe the Bible fairytale of Adam and Eve is real. These people don't understand biology, think evolution is a lie from Satan and they shape public policy in the US because evangelicals are a major voting block. I don't appreciate it because it holds us back as a society. We have to be able to call out bad ideas that can get people killed or encourage ignorance about our world. Many religious Americans don't think we should do anything about climate change. They believe god will bring the end times and all the good christians will be magically transported to heaven. Do you believe that? Do you want the world's response to climate change shaped by that thinking? I do not.
@dansattah

@Angelina Vaskova I didn't bother to read your full comment, because your first sentence was already total BS. There's a big difference between "common language" or "slang" and academic "jargon". In all scientific dieciplnes, what is commonly called a "theory" is actually a "hypothesis". It only becomes a "scientific theory", if you can prove it to be true across multiple disciplines. No ifs or buts about that, if you actually study scientific research and methodology, like e.g. in peer-reviewed journals.

Well, it hasn't, it's a theory. It's a principle of scientific thinking: If only one argument falsifies a theory, you'll have to adjust or dismiss it. While I found the clip interesting with great moments, I thought Marty's take away rather sadly human in the end. He ended up seeing what he wanted to see, and interpreting the evidence to his worldview so he could return home comforted. Instead of realizing the truth that he had already been given. The Christmas pageant, the Christmas songs in the stores, etc. all of that was just holiday spirit in countries that hardly celebrate Christmas religiously. It is just part of how it is done, but doesn't signify faith to most, but people like it all the same. The same way they still like getting married in churches though they don't believe. It is traditional.

But it's not really true, and to show the disadvantages in this type of video is incredibly difficult so it will inevitably end up being a propaganda video for the expensive and overcrowded Nordic system (which is about to collapse and would already have collapsed if Nordics would be as unhealthy as Americans are).

We pay the highest costs in the world for medical care, prescription drugs, medical devices, etc... If I dare to say anything bad about Islam in a harsh manner I'm instantly marked as a racist asshole and can even get criminal charges if I'm in influential position(Like one of our politicians did not too long ago). If I say same things in a similar manner about Christianity, people would just shrug me off as loud and obnoxious and move one with their lives, many might even agree. That's fucking Ridiculous. ¿One of the most catholic countries on earth? As far as I know, many Brazilians have turned to Protestantism (more specifically Pentecostalism) in the last decades. Here in Chile there's a complicated relationship between the people (especially poor people) and the Catholic Church, because most priests come from rich families. That's why many people from the lower class are protestants and despise the Catholic Church. For instance, my hometown (one of the poorest towns in Chile) is mostly protestant. I thought the same was happening in Brazil. By the way, I'm an atheist myself and despise both Catholic Church and Protestant churches equally.

@@AtamMardes Sry late response, did not get notified earlier. I would like to analyze your claims a bit more. Your "facts" are not facts by themselves. A religion could teach what you say, but this seems to be a simple understanding of religion. Let´s first define religion a little better. Religion is a collection of believes (often aimed at a God, or higher power). Religions can have different beliefs, and become new religions, or they can have a root in one and be like branches, believing a little differently. In my religion God is seen as the life giver. I can thank him or not do that, it´s up to every individual. If a religion teaches God is blue, I can believe in that or I can reject that... that is just a SMALL part of a question of something bigger. Religion is for a big number of people, not a system that you follow blindly (for some fundamentalists it is). In my religion there are also vegetarians... and I don´t think they thank God for the meat. In my religion some among the fundamentalists believe something close to what you said, that God heals the "righteous" and let´s others die. *** Just to be clear, I do not believe that, and I can say that of the religious people I most engage with (20 persons) NONE of them believe that - they are not fundamentalists! But I have heard weird people hold to such interpretations. In fact I had cancer, but I did NOT ask God to heal me, because I do NOT believe that God heals people. What I did, was thanking God (nearly every day) for the fact that I was alive and could meet my loved ones. While I did think of praying for a healing, I decided not to do it, because I want to be honest with my belief. I did not believe it before, and I would not try to change that because I was the one standing in shit. You: " Can't you see how the charlatan theologians have fooled you to believe in an imaginary God by exploiting your hypocrisy, narcissism, arrogance and ignorance?" Some theologians are certainly charlatans, but there are many good theologians too. If God is imaginary or if there was something before the creation of the universe, is up for everyone to decide for themselves what is more plausible. I do not think that I fit into the description of "hypocrisy, narcissism, arrogance and ignorance" as I try to avoid that as much as possible. At the same time I am aware that we humans are not perfect, and I might maybe be arrogant at times of your given examples. Have a nice day!

This wonderful video shows citizens of Post-Enlightenment Nordic nations engaging a Christian fundamentalist from the US South. What a great example to people the world over having to deal with religious fundamentalism. The Scandinavians embrace the Southern pastor with respect as a fellow human, all the while making it patently clear they reject toxic Dark Ages nonsense that threatens humanity’s very existence at this pivotal time in history.

Great documentary, it just highlighted to me how people build a religion around themselves like a shield of armour. He has this role of 'pastor' this congregation he has to show a strong faith to, this family he supports financially through religion. It's like a huge edifice you can't even get into. It's the same with many organised religions, they have a hierarchy but when you look they're built on quick sand.

for a conservative pastor from southern usa, I felt he was kinda open minded....he listened, and conversed, said his opinion but still respected other´s opinions, and beliefs....and I know I am showing my own prejudice here: "as a reverend from southern usa..." bit....But it just show we all have our beliefs, and no matter how bad we deny it....we all have our prejudices too...

Thanks again for uploading this! I love this show I find it fascinating and culturally insightful. Here is the U.S we're still a very young country, and in many ways our theology, and ideals are still stuck in an archaic mindset. I'm glad I can watch these episode here on KZfaq. I have to say I can relate to the Scandinavians in their disbelief of a "God." Around here where I live in Alabama (the bible-belt) conservative Christians outnumber anyone else with differing theological opinions, it's pretty horrible sometimes. Anyway, to keep this short, I'll just say I love The Norden, and I will continue to look forward to more episodes being posted here. :D

An American preacher accosts people on the street in Scandinavia, and asks them, in ENGLISH, whether they believe in God, and most of them are able to understand him. How many Americans could understand the same question, if it was phrased in Swedish, Finnish, Danish, or any other language?? It seems that atheistic/irreligious cultures have better educational systems......
@dfjgkdjngnkdkngkdjf
@dfjgkdjngnkdkngkdjf 8 жыл бұрын
+Dan MacArtain I agree, its because they have more open minded/accepting people dealing with the educational system. In America (where I live) there are still people trying to disprove evolution and some schools are soooooo religious that they still can't decide if they should teach religion instead of science. I do have to say though that the more coastal states such as California, Washington, New York, Etc are the most open minded states, and the South is VERY religious region of our country. And we also learn different languages in our educational systems, its just not as pushy as some other countries so most people forget what they had learnt, but for example I can speak French and many people can speak Spanish to.

It has to do more with the fact that english is used internationally and therefore many speak it fluently, especially in northern parts of Europe (including the Netherlands and Germany)
@MaggaraMarine
@MaggaraMarine 8 жыл бұрын
But how many Scandinavian people would understand if somebody asked the same questions in, let's say, French? In that case Americans would understand those questions much more likely than Scandinavians would. The thing is, English is the international language. People all around the world learn to speak it. And I do think we need an international language. It would be really difficult if you would need to learn a new language every time you visit a new country. It's very unlikely that an American would learn any of the Scandinavian languages. If they learn another language, I guess it's Spanish or French or something like that - something that is spoken in the countries near them or the countries that they may visit, or a language that just is pretty common. French and Spanish make sense because they speak French in Canada (and if Americans visit one European country, it's usually France) and Spanish in Mexico and many South American countries. On the other hand, people in Scandinavia usually learn English, but what other languages can they speak? Not many others. Well, maybe another Scandinavian language but those are really close to each other. You can't really expect a random Scandinavian to know any other language than their own mother tongue and English. In Finland (where I live) Swedish is another official language but not many Finns can speak Swedish fluently at all (most people see no need for it because Swedes can speak English so fluently, and the vast majority of the Finns who speak Swedish as their first language also speak fluent Finnish). We know English because America has had such a big impact on our culture. If you open TV, you'll most likely hear English (we don't dub TV shows here - we use subtitles). If you open the radio, you'll most likely hear songs with English lyrics. Same with video games and of course the internet. You can't really avoid hearing/reading English. The fact that people can speak English here doesn't really show the superiority of our education system (well, it would show how bad our education system was if people couldn't speak English here). Yes, I think the education system in Scandinavia is superior to the US. But your argument was not that good. The good part in our education system is the fact that it is equal. We don't have "good (private) schools" and "bad (public) schools" - everybody in any school gets pretty much the same quality education. Schools are free (well, paid in taxes) and that's what makes our education system so much better. The differences between students that come from "good" and "bad" schools is not that big because that kind of competition doesn't really exist (because you don't need to pay to get in to a "good" school). This means the difference between good and bad students is not that big either. But in the US a good student that comes from a bad school may not be good at all by the standards of a good school. And a bad student that comes from a bad school is really bad. So the differences between good and bad students are much bigger in the US. But yeah, education and religion do have a correlation. The better educated people are, the less likely they are religious. You can just look at the poorest countries vs the richest countries. In the poorest countries pretty much everybody is religious. In the richest countries atheism is more common. It's about living conditions. If you live in poor conditions, being religious makes sense, because you need something to give you comfort. But those who live in good conditions have more time to wonder about these questions. They just don't see the need for religion and can also see the flaws in religion.

***** But I would guess French or Spanish is the language that they'll most likely know besides their mother tongue. So if you spoke French or Spanish to an American, they would more likely understand it than if you spoke French or Spanish to a Scandinavian. But that wasn't my point. My point was that the original argument was bad. "Because Americans wouldn't understand Swedish, that makes them stupid and because Scandinavians understand English, that makes them smart" - that's basically what the argument was saying. I don't disagree with the fact that their school system is much worse than here in Scandinavia, but that was just a bad argument.

I think its funny when religious people refer to "God" because they never specify which god they talk about. There are currently +500 very different gods being worshiped around the world with different scriptures, different rules and different forms of worship. So please be specific when you refer to your god. And its not enough to say "christian god" because there are 83 different versions of christianity in America alone, so also there you need to specify which version you worship (protestant, catholic, baptist, jehovah's witness etc etc..) hmmm.... if there really is a supreme being, you would think that he/she/it would make the rules more clear, right?

A new episode in the series is now published. It's about gender equality and gender roles in the Nordic society. Maria Kopchenova from Russia meets a Finnish feminist and a Danish masculinist. But what exactly is snow ploughing with a gender perspective? That, and much more, in The Norden - Gender, here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rLOUmbRjsr6scmQ.html

John Stark The one thing I find disgusting about the Norden Show is that you take on a pretence of neutrality when in fact you obviously design the show according to your own leftist/liberal political agenda. You use nationalism as a means to project your political liberal ideas.

Its not about the left or right, its about Nordic countries. What seems liberal or leftist to you is our normal everyday life... Our right wing people would be considered liberal in USA..

This was a very good program. Thanks for posting it. This made me respect the Scandinavian countries even more then I did before. They get it and its such a relief to see a just, compassionate society that has shed superstition and focused on the wellness of humans and their environment. One funny note: I haven't heard the term: "god honoring movement".......I guess that means less sexually expressive? All the best.

Just keep in mind, the state churches of Scandinavia are mostly seremonial and not really representative of Christian churches in our countries. We have «evangelicals» also in Scandinavia, lutheran pietists and Hillsong-like movements, although they are not so big in numbers. I know quite a few people who agree with Marty on the issue of same-sex marriage. So it seems like there was done an active choice to visit the most liberal churches and cities in this program. And a humanist is the one they chose to talk to in the Bible belt...? Greatings from an Ex-Conservative living in Norway😉

Although I don’t know Finland that well. I know about Evangelical-like churches and fundamentalist in Norway and Sweden. Still, if you want to visit an area where religion isn’t prevalent in politics and public society, Norden is your area😉

It was interesting to see things from a different perspective. Good on Marty for having an open mind enough to learn about religion in another country. Thank you.

Marty never in his life left his personal “comfort zone” or used his own brain for at least a little bit of critical thinking about HIS positions and how they might impact others - and it shows! His questions and reactions are quite sad to see - confirming "stupid" and we see already how THAT "plays out" in large parts of the US!

Thanks for posting this, It is a very interesting to see how people in other parts of the world feel about religion and some of the issues that cause so much contention here in America. I like that most of the people he talked to seemed to have a live and let live attitude about things.
