This video on the Norse God Loki was a highly requested one! So many people want to know more about mentions of Loki in Norse Mythology, how to work with Loki, etc. In this video I'm discussing questions all around the Norse Trickster God like: Is Loki even a God? Is Loki secretly a queer icon? Is he evil?
Loki is definitely the most complicated one of the Norse Gods and ever new Norse Pagan will find themselves confronted with his presence. So I hope with this video I can help you figure him out a little bit.
My channel is all about witchcraft, norse paganism and spirituality in general. If you're curious about my upcoming videos, make sure to subscribe!

Chaos is neither good or evil, it does it's own thing, sometimes those things end up being good or bad for you, depending on how you perceive it. That's kind of how I look at most trickster gods, chaos as a force of nature that is neither good or bad, but the ramifications of the situation is always change. Change is scary to most people, you tend to lack control in how things work out. And we don't always know if our good intentions will have negative effects on someone or something.

I have to admit, I was a little nervous about this video since Loki is the deity I’m closest to, but people frequently don’t understand him at all. You obviously do though, so thank you for making this wonderful video! I hadn’t put into words (so to speak) how Loki does like it when I speak directly and casually to him, but it’s very true. I really resonated with everyone else’s experiences! I also really appreciated that you brought up the Christianization of the tales equating to Loki becoming more villainous; I don’t see that as any coincidence. I’d also learned recently about the alternate version of Baldur’s death that didn’t even involve him, so I really don’t think it’s fair to hold that account against him. He is just the best, my biggest helper and guide!

I’m really resonating with feeling like Loki is a protector of outcasts. I’m queer, autistic, was bullied horribly…. Wonderfully helpful video. Thank you so much for not only sharing your perspective, but also curating different perspectives from the community. This is so valuable to me as a new practitioner! Skål!

I've been a devotee of Loki for many years now and he has only ever helped me and comforted me, though his methods might seem harsh or difficult at the time. It's hard to invite chaos into your life, and when you follow Loki, that is what you're doing. I also follow Hel, and I tend to interpret the story of Baldur's death like this- it's a story about the value of having a finite time alive, and a finite amount of time with your loved ones. Humans all wish we could live forever, but we can't, and in many ways that fact is what makes life special. Hel refusing to release Baldur was her lesson to the gods- your time is finite, just like everyone else's. Loki, the agent of chaos that he is, often has a hand in teaching these game changing lessons, to the other gods and to the humans retelling the tales thousands of years into the future.

One old tale of Loki I've stumbled across recently is a Faroese ballad that paints him in a good light. The tale describes how Loki saves a human child from a Jotun. The ballad is called "Lokka Táttur" (Loki's Tale: A Faroese Ballad) and a free PDF can be found online. It's only 6 pages long and is translated into English. I'm not sure how old the ballad is, but it's nice to see positive stories of dear Loki nonetheless.

Loki literally pounced on me when I admitted to myself that I was a witch. I've been an outcast my whole life and realized they were always there. In my experience, they are hilarious and act as a protector towards me among other things as well. I have social anxiety and ofter feel them wrap their arm around me to tell me it's ok. Love them so much.

I listen to a Norse mythology podcast and they’ve discussed Loki at length. They have mentioned a few times that it’s almost like he’s the “keeper of fate” in a way where if something happens which threatens fate… such as Baldur being destined to die and Frigg tries her hardest to stop it from happening, Loki will intervene. Like, the reason why good things seem to happen from his bad behaviour is more because he is ensuring fate isn’t altered… they explain it SOOOOO much better than me lol. I’ve come to really appreciate Loki.

I sware he sends spiders. One time I woke up in the middle of the night and there was a gigantuan spider on my windowsill that faces my bed. And one time there was this gigantic spider the size of a fist almost in our couch a while ago. Now that I see spiders as a sign from Loki I'm not so scared of them now but goddamnit still gets me everytime

Snorri and Saxo a 100% needed a Lucifer-like figure when writing the Eddas, and Loki was the only one fitting for the role. And we must remember that when doing our research.

Snorre wrote one book called Edda. Saxo wrote his Danish history, but no Edda. In authentic heathen poetry, Loki gives birth to numerous horrible monsters that are said to be hated by the gods. He also leads the forces of chaos and destruction against the gods which literally results in the end of the world. This is not a good figure.

I had an experience where when I was building my relationship with Freyja, Loki kept showing up pretending to be her and would also prank me in my dreams. It was funny, but my annoyance over it made me feel closer to Freyja and I got to know her better through the experience. i may work with him in the future but right now i can only take on one deity

I know a lot of people see Lokasenna as him being evil and uncaring about the god...but I also want to say that it reads as a victim wanting to get back at everyone. I also know there's many people who feel they've had their own lokasenna. The story doesn't read (at least to me) as someone deciding to be an ass, but rather as someone who's drunk and angry and wants to show everyone what the truth is. He essentially held up a mirror to them, and the gods reacted by murdering his sons and torturing him. I cannot feel Loki is the villain in this story because I can just sense the bitterness in it

I just found your channel today through your runes videos, and saw this was just uploaded. I just started working with Loki last week and I love it! This was a really good summary and I appreciate you for making it. My life is total chaos right now, and as soon as Loki made contact with me I felt so calm. He’s the master of the chaos so it was like I knew he’d help me see the way through it, help me see the patterns and make sense of it so I wouldn’t have to fear whatever happens next. Definitely not evil in my opinion.

I started working with Hel not too long ago. Immediately when I set up her candle and altar space there were spiders around my altar which has never happened. A spider had literally made its web above Hel’s candle. I began feeling another energy as well so I did some research and found out it was just Loki checking in on his daughter and the person whos working with her 😅 I set up a mini altar for him with a candle and immediately all the spiders disappeared, but I still feel him around.

Loki has been in my life since I was a child basically, but I didn't realise it until about four years ago, when I finally accepted my faith as a norse pagan. Just to add to him pretending to be something else instead of being straightforward, with me he pretended to be an angel (yeah I know it's hilarious) for one whole year. I guess he thought that it would be funny to do that to someone who has a very complicated relationship with christianity in general lol. I also completely relate to your experience of him just bombarding your brain before you actually acknowledge him, he did the same with me.

I agree that Loki shares many of the characteristics you described here. Im impressed by your presentation, well done! I thought of another way to describe his influence which I'd like to add. That is he encourages me to figure things out, and to think things through more carefully when perhaps there was something I overlooked. So having the great Loki around is like having a brilliant genius, and a friend watching your back!

I love your videos and I've honestly been waiting for this one 😅 Thank you so much for all of your content! Loki was the first deity I've worked with and I absolutely adore and respect him. Sigyn came to me with Loki and I cried for their story. Also, Baldur staying in Helhiem allowed him to help rebuild after Ragnarok! I believe that's part of the reason Loki didn't weep. I've also had the same experiences as far as his energy being warm and comforting and Loki pretending to be others 🤣 I busted out laughing when you said that! Again, thank you for all of your videos and have fun and be safe on your vacation!! I'm so happy for you!

I'm still new to Loki but for me he felt familiar ( I had a not so great childhood and when things got really bad I felt this kind energy around me that helped me feel safe) and when I started working with Loki he felt like that energy. He is also like a dad to me since in his opinion my "dad" is a jerk so I need a better one. He has a sweet tooth for me he likes chocolate so I give him a lot of that.

I do treat Loki as a god. I treat it as an agent of chaos and change. When I call on Loki, it's usually if I foresee big change coming my way. I typically ask to help deal with coming changes and perceived chaos. But this is how I approach any god. I don't make demands or ask for material things. As a side note, I never give offerings to Odin without including Loki as well. I give thanks and appreciation, to Loki, if I come through a difficult situation.

Age of Mythology the game has Loki as a major god for the Norse, god Loki is valid
@ssanhayeob
@ssanhayeob Жыл бұрын
also, and this is probably just me rambling, we as pagans / animists, need to give a little bit less importance to the title "God" when worshipping entities. i understand that monotheistic religions left a big impact on how we view things, but if we look how thinks worked back in the day, for example, the Vættir weren't considered Gods, yet they were worshipped, people were doing Blót to them, paying them their respect and everything! A lot of entities are very powerful and as important as the Æsir or the Vanir, just being part of nature. So yeah, our practices are ours and if you want to worship Loki you can, even if he doesn't qualify as a God for certain scholars (I myself consider him a God, but if you don't that's valid too)

I don't know a lot about god's & Goddess like you & others do. But as for shape shifting. I do something similar in my dreams. Sometimes I run real fast & I am low to the ground. Also I hear wolves ,crows, bats & owls & other night creatures, not only can I hear them in my dreams I can also sense their presence. In some dreams I also change size Sometimes I am my own size 5,5. But sometimes I am very tall, at a guess somewhere between 6,6 & Upton 7 feet. Other times I will see myself in mirrors & I have changed colour, mainly white that I am.but sometimes black or brown, blueish reddish, sometimes very green. All colours really. I have had sex with thousands of females all over the world in different places, including family members, royalty, nuns & other beings, even females that look dead. I have also done battle with many creatures, strange looking beings & vampires & aliens & reptile looking beings. But the strangest thing about all my dreams is that I do it in another time. It's like time fluctuates forty eight hours either way, sometimes I get stuck on the twenty four hours & that's when battles start or things go wrong. What some people would call nightmares. I can go further back in time, it's like running really fast & leaping amazing distances ,I normally just drop right next to who or where I want to be. In one dream I saw Jesus, he looks nothing like he does in films or anything, I dropped behind him, but about thirty or so yards away. I knew straight away it was him, he must have felt my presence, as he turned & looked at me he looked panicked, he then ran away with two others that were with him. I never chased him. I could write a book about my dreams.hundreds I can remember & thousands I cannot. I can even remember my very first dream as a child when I was about five or six. Even if dreams are not real & just imagination, I have met world leaders, royalty, strange creatures & done some amazing things. I have never been defeated in battle in my dreams, if I do get defeated then maybe the dreams will stop. As for Loki, maybe he has all the stuff the gods & goddesses have & maybe more than them. Sometimes he will impress the good guys & sometimes the bad guys. Maybe he has a human education & wants to impress everyone & does not know how to impress himself.

I agree that lot of blowback around Loki and even to a larger extent, Ragnarok, is the effects of latent Christianity. Our ancestors saw life and death as cycles just as in nature. Death wasn’t the end. Also, death is necessary for rebirth as we see in Hel, Goddess of death and life. When the Eddas and sagas were written down, they painted the events with their dualistic worldview of heaven and hell, when all signs point to our ancestors having a much more nuanced view of right and wrong and held much more to a code of personal responsibility rather than leaving it all up to the singular Christian god. They may have viewed Raganrok on both micro and macro levels. It can be a devastating death of an old part of life that’s necessary to give birth to a new part. It could be as that fear to this life on Midgard that we have, but it’s a cycle that leads to a new age. It could have been the ancient memories of a climate apocalypse from the end of the ice age. Who knows, but I guess my point is that it was much more complicated and nuanced in our ancestors worldview. Loki in all these stories seems to me to bring balance. He cuts off Sif’s hair and then out of the chaos that caused, he offers the gifts from the Dwarves to the gods. I’m not sure if I’m remembering correctly, but does Bladr come back amongst the few resurrected after Ragnarok? If so, Loki’s actions in that case can possibly been seen as a necessary catalyst and important part of the Ragnarok cycle. I’m new to this, so I’m not sure if it makes any sense. Great video, with lots to think about. I’m definitely checking out the other Loki video (which you’ve made by the time I’m first watching this) after this one! Skål!

Loki is not even a chaos God. Recently historians have come to the agreement that “Loki” is most likely another name for “Lodur” from the creation myth, and that Loki himself most likely debuted as a vaettr or a nisse (house spirit) that was thought to protect homes and children before rising to Godhood status. This nisse is sometimes called the Ashlad because offerings to them were left at the fireplace - IE the “hearthfire” hence “Loki, God of the hearthfire.” This theory is supported by the story of Lokka Tattur, which is a Faroese ballad. Not only that but Ragnarok is a cycle of rebirth - not destruction. Because after the battle is over, Baldr is reborn and joins his brother as the new King of Asgard and they create new humans to repopulate Midguard. As far as Loki goes, he was protecting his family cause he got fed up with Odin’s shit and I would also like to take this moment to point out that Loki killing Baldr is a story that is isolated to Iceland. I don’t know what their deal is with him but whatever.

As far as I know the theory with Loki being another name for Lodur is highly debated but it’s not a fact. It’s just a guess. But yeah, as I pointed out - Snorris version of Baldrs death is the only that mentions Loki as the one to be blamed. Saxo for example never even mentions him in his version of the story. So it’s pretty likely another case of the Christians needing someone to blame 😅

Interesting. I am homosexual man, so naturally, I've been interested in the Norse attitudes to that & any potential deities. Loki seems to represent things that don't resonate with me, though, such as the gender fluidity. I don't suppose there are any norse deities who are more straightforwardly appropriate for me, are there?
@TheNorseWitch

No you probably won’t find a lot there. Homosexuality (at least male homosexuality) was pretty much looked down upon during the Viking age (look up the terms ergi and ragr!) so you won’t find a straight up gay Norse god. But of course that doesn’t mean you can’t worship the gods. ☺️

@@TheNorseWitch I agree! I don't argue with people that call Loki the "shadow side" of Odin LOL!! In all honesty, Odin's name alone..."Fury/Frenzy" says alot...and his Kenning or Haita, "Bolverk (Evil One)" is very indicitive of that side of his nature. How I really decide who is good or bad depends on how many "innocent" lives they take and if they commit rape. Then, i look at the things they have done that appear to be within or outside of normal human behavior. So a god that is mostly honest that only kills other gods or things that "had it coming" i consider a "good" god. So Zeus, we will say, is definitely not a god I would like to follow, and I keep people that "Identify" with Zeus at an arms length. I actually steer away from people that follow Zeus alot more than I would from someone that follows Loki. Why, well because Zeus, by many, is seen as blameless or has had excuses made for him by either other gods or other people. Lokis followers, on the other hand, may only say "well, that is just the way he is", and in the various myths, we see him trying to rectify his actions at some points, and we also see other gods scold him, and we even see remorse. SO i also look at this and say "exactly how OLD was Loki when he was first brought to Asgard? was he merely a young god of the wild that the gods of order just simply not know how to handle? to the side, we see in hebrew language, in the Old testament, the word for evil, when appliied to a spirit or god, was actually "unripe". so could this have been Lokis case? was he simply just not ripened as an individual? had he not yet evovled? in all honesty, if he wasnt a god, but just deified, he wouldnt have godlike attributes. And then at this point we see Odin acting like a carzy mad man, killing young thralls to get to some mead. Well. well. LOL

Loki as a Queer icon 😂 People of this century are getting weirder, his stories involve shapeshifting and even bearing "animal" progeny. Everything about him points to him being SOMETHING nothing like any of us and that's pretty much how the stories about him describe him, how the other characters of the Norse mythos saw him too. You want to USE him as a posterboy for your own political issues go for it, but keep in mind that from an outside point of view he's nothing like us and if anything he's Pansexual, the Greek expression for someone that could love all, anyone and his case anything which historian's pretty much agree is probably how the majority of people in that day and age were

@@TheNorseWitch That's cool! I have been studying deities that have been historically worshipped in this place and so far I have mostly worked myself through the Roman/Greek ones and working towards the Norse, German and Celtic ones, so I haven't come around to Odin yet. That's certainly something to look forward to :D I must say I've been kinda intimidated by him so that's a good icebreaker. I know they equated him to Wodan here (the level of melting pot is so high around these parts, it can get kinda confusing) but that's only from studying the origins of our days of the week

Cutting off all her hair was a common (albeit cruel) method dealing with unfaithful wives among the Norse/Vikings though. Loki used tradition to get one over on Thor and Sif. He got Sif to screw him, thus enabling Loki to bring ridicule to Thor and Sif by cutting Sif's hair when she fell asleep in Loki's bed afterward. And then Loki had to pay the price, which wasn't so bad from his perspective.

I think in the stories, loki is careless and reckless, even with the lives of other gods. I think that's why the last straw was loki telling off all of the gods basically, because it revealed that he didn't care about them and before they gave him the benefit of the doubt and even cared about him. I'm not saying that anyone can't worship him, I just won't do it myself. It was a good video though, I still enjoyed it.
