Bend It Like Jong (2010): He proudly represented North Korea in the world cup. Yet Jong Tae Se was born and raised in Japan. He represents a 600 000 strong community of North Korean descendants for whom Kim Jong-Un can do no wrong.

"I respect Kim Jong-il absolutely", the football star proudly states. But Jong has never known the true horrors of life under his revered leader. He is one of thousands of Korean descendants living in urban modernity in Japan, educated at North Korean funded schools with a strictly Kim-friendly syllabus. "We teach that he is the highest leader of modern North Korea", the headmaster of one such school says. Standing in contrast to this adoration however there are many Koreans in Japan who returned to North Korea to find only pain and death. Li Sang Bong knew as soon he stepped off the boat that the place advertised "as paradise on Earth was a downright lie". For those who have survived the horrors of the prison-like country, it is a "heartless place" and Jong is nothing more than a symbol of sadness.

I personally have nothing against Korean people, but the reason why some Japanese people have issues with Japan-born Koreans is because they don't want to assimilate into the Japanese society even though they spent all their lives living in Japan. They prefer to segregate themselves and live separately from us Japanese. Some Japanese people feel that if those Japan-born Koreans don't want to assimilate into Japanese society, then maybe they should go back to Korea where they consider as their homeland. Some others feel that Japan-born Koreans should not be given the right to vote while they refuse to naturalise to be Japanese and receiving financial support from the Japanese government. The issue between Japanese and Japan-born Koreans is a tough one to deal with, and it has been going on for a long time. I personally can see both sides of the arguments and wish that things get settled between Japanese and Japan-born Koreans.

Your right North Korea is not perfect, its far from perfect and probably one of the worst countries to live in and if you want leave risk not only your life but your families lifes. You say its the USA'S fault? Last i checked the north koreans with aid from the USSR regime forefully tried to take over the whole of Korea and force communism on the enite pensiula. While the USA helped defend Korea from the hostile take over. If anything the US should be admired that they saved the whole south of Korea which is one of the best countries in the world unlike the north.

thats so true! i forget that sometimes but i really shouldn't since i used to be a "shove american pride down their throats" sorta kid, sort of obnoxious i see in hindsight now obviously, that was until i went and lived in Canada and after a while, while saying the things i would, I think i finally heard what i actually sounded like. Nothing wrong with pride for country, I'm just saying me at that point in time was a bit rude, obnoxious, but most importantly thoughtless towards what I was saying about said pride and love.. I think i just did it because it was done instead of truly professing a genuine love of country and the people who of course embody said country~ ANYWAYS all of that was just me rambling, in short I indeed agree with your statement!

I'm South Korean, yet I can somehow relate with the Japanese viewpoint here. If North Korean defectors in South Korea acts in that way, our government will jail them based on the National Security Act. Of course, Japan has original sin for the tragedy as it is originated from the colonial period in Korea. But it's bullshit to force modern day Japan to pay for the cost in such a manner. I somehow understand from the heart that those Korean groups would never give up their ethnic pride, especially in the land where the unforgettable resentments of most Koreans lie within. It might be almost unacceptable for them to be assimilated with Japanese society. But those people need to admit that Japan is also the country that they were born and raised. One shouldn't cause problems to a society that has accepted oneself, and try to compromise with it as much as he/she can.
@FOLIPE
@FOLIPE 6 жыл бұрын
Simon I get your point but I beg to differ. Firstly, they don't have to support N. Korea when South Korea exists if all that matters is their ancestral origin. Secondly, they live and Japan so it is only fair that they assimilate to some extent, I mean, it is Japan. No one is forcing them to live there anymore... And although I believe you are right that the original issue was caused by Japan, they showed much more patience and understanding on this situation than I think was required of them. After two or three generations and a successful South Korea, I don't think it is too much to ask them to assimilate to a degree or at least support the Korea that doesn't kill its own population...

It's kind of strange that they have maintained such a strong connection and patriotism to North Korea even when you ignore the politics and the reality there. At the same time it's kind understandable seeing how they live in their own community and feel rejected by Japan. It must be a sad situation for them to be stuck in between two identities like that: being an ethnic Korean but really being a Japanese and calling Japan your home.... but you know you are not really Japanese because your are North Korean and everyone expects that of you. Now if you factor in the situation in North Korea it must be even worse if you accept the things that happen there. It's like you are either at home where you truly belong and are accepted but have a hard life or be at a place where your life is considerably better but where you are never seen or treated as a full citizen. They could just be like a community of Koreans in Japan (I am assuming the rest of them are like that??), but North Korea still funds them and their school system is in a way still controlled by them. A very interesting documentary.

Perhaps but you do realise that if they said anything against or acted against the North Korean government, they would probably face the wrath of the dictatorship. The brainwashing still has to be reinforced but if they are self-aware, I can imagine they would be smart enough to appreciate that they're particularly fortunate compared to other mainland North Koreans and get to keep North Korea at an arm's length distance as long as they act a certain way when they are in front of who they need to prove themselves to. Other than playing up an act to the dictatorship, they're pretty much free to live a more Japanese lifestyle.

This story is not about a group of spies and deranged extremists. This is a group of people who feel neglected by the country of their birth and feeling unified only under the banner where they are considered accepted for what they are. Sadly, that banner was North Korean. I did not understand the soccer player when he was first introduced as a "proud North Korean living in Japan". Now, I understand why he is like that and why other Koreans born in Japan feel that way. Overall, North Korea is a problem we have to live with... and hopefully solve.

To provide a different perspective to this story. There is active racism against Koreans and Chinese living in Japan where they are seen as second class citizens. This could be a reason why these people still feel loyalty to their country of origin. Similar to how some Mexicans in the USA feel though they left their country for good. Google or check wikipedia for racism in Japan for more details.

Xiao Hei Seems that these ethnic Korean don't have Japanese citizenship, they're still North/South Korean nationals and only have permanent residency status in Japan. Even after 100 years they still refuse to change their citizenship, I wonder what do they want actually. Anyway how can you call Koreans and Chinese in Japan as "second class citizens" if they're not even Japanese nationals? Japanese do discriminate against anyone who are non-Japanese though, even half-japanese are seen as foreigners there, it really depends on you look Japanese or not.

Im from Japan and I hated all of the discrimination growing up(I'm mixed). And this generation has truly shifted the beliefs of the older one, anyone under 30 takes discrimination seriously towards the class system/racism, Japan is really trying hard to make every citizen feel more excepted. Money is now Japan's new class determinator and its truly sad.

The issue of discrimination could be reduced if the kids all went to the same school instead of going to a North Korean one. It doesn't say in the documentary that those kids are banned from going to a regular state school. Why wouldn't their parents want what's best for them, and why do they think that sending their kids to a segregated school is a good thing?!

21:48 that's just so stupid. Playing under the name of North Korea while not wanting to live there? That's stupidity. He is literally turning a blind eye on the atrocities of the North towards its OWN people. If he's really proud of the Kim regime, might as well live in your HOMELAND so you could have a taste of what a REGULAR North Korean life is that don't get to experience the luxury you get in Japan. I am not hating the Koreans living in Japan but I hate the fact some of them gave their allegiance to the North without really experiencing what it's like to live under the government they are supporting. Y'all are living in Japan enjoying freedom that regular North Koreans never experienced. Disgusting.
