I just watched his earliest short film "Hansel and Gretel" (2007) based on the fairy tale by the same name. He made it in the style of a 1920's silent film. Looks to have been very low budget but quite interesting to see. You can watch it on the "Famous First Films" channel here on KZfaq.

i really liked the northman but i personally think its his weakest movie. the audio, acting and the looks are amazing but the story is just meh and the movie doesnt demand anything from the audience at all. i know that isnt eggers fault because thats just how the Amleth story is but still its not such a masterpiece as the lighthouse and the witch imo.

@@datermometer8095 totally agree with you. The witch is his masterpiece. The Northman has a common story of betrayal and revenge, we've seen it with Shakespeare, Lion king and many others, although, i really like Eggers' interpretation of this story, and for me, the visuals and acting here is not a how to show the movie, it is the movie itself. For example, in The Lighthouse we don't have a major plot throughout the story, it's an experience of many things such as visuals and acting that you got be immersed to enjoy it, and so is The Northman

This movie is the closest I've seen to a proper Nordic tale. It's the story that Shakespeare based Hamlet on which in turn inspired the lion king. Robert Eggers the director went to great lengths to make it as realistic as possible. The clothing warn is all had stitched, the armour and weapons are almost all historical to the time period, buildings and there layouts are accurate and most of the customs and rituals are as historically accurate as possible. All this really immerses you into a fantastic film. Not everything is perfect but this is probably the closest any Nordic movie or show has ever been. I absolutely love how it mix's in the mythology and kind of leaves to interpretation to whether he is really seeing it or not. One of the best historical movies I've seen in a long time and up there with the best for me.

You clearly didnt watch "The shadow of the Raven", an Icelandic film from the late 80's. Dude, even "Beowulf and Grendel" (2005) has a better narrative. The visuals (awesome cinematography) and creepy atmosphere (which I guess are Eggers "trademark" at this point) dont neccesarily turn any story into a masterpiece.

@@winterfell_forever come on man, you're being a bit harsh. It's a pretty good representation of The Amleth saga, Viking culture & beliefs, even if you think there are better ones. Why be unnecessarily mean to someone who enjoyed it. Eggers did well I thought, maybe not a "Masterpiece" but still a solid film.
@winterfell_forever

@@godfroi10991 I dont think I;m being too harsh. And if you enjoyed it, more power to ye. But the comment sections of every review of this is filled with people literally jerking off to Eggres' cock like this film is the second coming of Christ, with no mentions to its obvious flaws. Most of the characters are flat, the changes he made departing from the original dont add a fucking thing, just confuse the story. Eggers put a lot of production work on this, its obvious from what you see on the screen... But I think this is a film more concerned about the ancillary details (the lore, the atmosphere) not crafting the story, the characters, which are pretty flat, with the exception of Kidman and the 5min you get to enjoy Dafoe, which I feel was underused here.

I'd say it was worth it for Amleth. His heart was poisoned by hate and the last thing he wanted was to infect his children with that hate. At the same time if he had let his uncle live, the cycle of revenge would have continued and Amleth's children would have been a target. When Amleth left the boat he intended to die, but his motivation had switched from revenge and hate to love and protecting his wife and children. That is truly noble.

@Kashgari Amleth spent the next decade and more becoming a great killer, and it was no doubt motivated by his desire to become strong enough to return someday and kill Fjolnir. But he lost himself in the pursuit of power and ended up destroying who knows how many innocent lives. He was just a weapon at that point and even if hearing Fjolnir's name again gave him a purpose, he had already lost his old home, never been close to anyone, and had no future in mind after killing Fjolnir. He was empty. Hate can be useful, but only if directed in a productive way. Amleth might have had no power when he was young, and was certainly a victim of the world he lived in, but the fact is he could have been something different. There are signs of it when he looks back at the burning house, and when he saves Fjolnir's younger son. He did not have to become the killing machine he did.

Nerd comment incoming: The reason helmets had nose pieces like that was because plate armor was designed to protect not only by absorbing direct blows (which the nose piece wouldn't), but also to cause more "glancing" blows, which skim off of the smooth armor. Because the nose sticks out from the face, it would be very likely to get chopped off as swords glance downward off the helmet. So the nose piece continues that smooth surface and offers a bit of protection from slashes to the head/face.
@Kuhmuhnistische_Partei
@Kuhmuhnistische_Partei Жыл бұрын
Well, early helmets like that aren't usually called plate armor. They are more... sheet armor? And the main risks were spears, axes and arrows. Not sword blows. I think we have to think in another way: the stuff warriors wore at their bodies like mail hauberks and helmets were not the main protection, the shield was. Hauberks and helmets were just an additional layer of protection. This will only change in the late medieval age with proper plate armor. And warriors always had to choose between protection and other stuff. An eyeguard + noseguard offers a lot of protection, but you can just see less. It's not as terrible as some might think, but it's definitely a difference. A completely open helmet would be the other extreme. Great sight, less protection. The nasal helmet was a compromise between those extreme. The nose guard was sometimes quite wide, so it didn't just protect the nose, it protected a good chunk of the face. And less protective, more open helmets remained a choice until the disappearance of metal body armor. Even some late medieval knights prefered open helmets when they fought on foot.

It's not really the original. The movie is not 1:1 the original amleth myth. We can even be pedantic and point out that we don't know the original version at all. The earliest versions we have are from the 12th century and are written by Christian dudes in Latin. The Viking Age ended in the 11th century. Who knows. Maybe there was a viking poem of that story in the 11th century and maybe it was itself just a rewritten version of an older version. There is no way to figure out what the "original" version was. And I think the movie is just not about the story or about character development. It's a journey into Viking mythology. Many parts of the movie don't come at all from the Amleth story and are just based on descriptions of viking culture by foreigners (the ship burial is based on a journal written by an Arabic traveller named Ahmad Ibn Fadlan - the same source The 13th Warrior is based on) or completely unrelated mythological stories and rituals (the ulfhednar/berserker ritual is even based on some depictions from before the viking age).

Your kid didn't even take her eyes off it once. Yeah this is like the Saving Private Ryan of Vikings movies. Fun fact that Robert wanted this movie to be so accurate that he spent several days inside a museum that had full sized longboats. He said this is exactly how our ships are going to look. So he hired artists to map out every detail of the ships and yes they did function the same way they did thousands of years ago. The only thing moving those boats were the men.

There are less common or well known stories about Úlfhéðnar, e. Wolf skins, that are pretty much the same thing, but usually a group of them as opposed to berzerkers who are usually alone. I really don't have anything to say, but I'll make a comment to help you guys with the KZfaq algorithm. It's a great film, and I would love to see more like this. Robert Eggers has been on a role lately, first with the Lighthouse and then with the Northman.

40:11 that vision shows his future daughter will be Saint Olga of Kiev. The patron saint of converts in Christianity. Almost nobody noticed this but I guess most people don't know who Saint Olga of Kiev is. If you google her you'll see the old paintings of her look just like the daughter + the mother's name is Olga + Saint Olga was born around the time the film takes place.

I recommend The Witch and The Lighthouse, also from Robert Eggers. I would also recommend the likes of Annihilation by Alex Garland, The Babadook and The Nightingale by Jennifer Kent, Guillermo del Toro’s Spanish triptych, The Orphanage, Mama and Tomas Alfredson’s Let the Right One In. These are a few of my favourite things.

This movie took a lot from Conan the Barbarian if you didn't see it i recommend it. Like the scene where he take the sword from the mummy is heavily inspired by Conan the Barbarian 1982. It's in a lot of the shot, another example is when they arrive as slave to Iceland, they are shackled like the children at the beginning of Conan

There is an incredible amount of detail in the fight against the draugr (undead). Not only is the draugr wearing vendel era (pre Viking age) armor, but after his decapitation his head is placed behind his body. This was the only was to ensure these tomb guardians did not stand back up; even after what would be considered a fatal blow.

I absolutely loved this movie. Between Eggers thorough reliance on historical experts for architecture of the post-Migration Period, to the inclusion of traditional weapons like the Seax sword pictured in the hand of Alexander Skårsgard under the Wolf cult during the raid, I was thoroughly impressed. The chapters make it seem like a poetic Edda. The makeup on Hawke made him unrecognizable to me. The ravens were considered by the Northmen to be messengers of Odinn, which is based on the lore of Hunin & Thunin. The tree is representative of Yggdrasil, unless I am mistaken. I am so glad you enjoyed this.

Yeah, just the trailer gave me Conan vibes. (But the narration at the opening really reminded me of that first movie) As I was watching of course you can't help but get a sorta Hamlet/Shakespeare feel which ultimately makes one think of "The Lion King" of all things I know (now) this is an older story altogether. Really cool stuff.

23:51 The original fight with the Drauger was all in his head. A lot of this film incorporates Norse Mythology, so sometimes things are real, and other times it’s Amleth imagining it or reflecting on his religious beliefs

I totally get why people walk out of this one kind of unsure what to say. It's kind of a strange experience. This world is so foreign to us, and the story leaves you kind of wondering what the point was. Anything that doesn't have a satisfying ending can be hard to feel good about, and I don't know if this ending is really satisfying. I like that Amleth knew he was damaged and had to go back to either die or kill Fjolnir, because either result would "cut the thread of Fate". Still, I think we walk away from that kind of story with our own world affecting how we view it. It looks wasteful to us, but it wasn't to them. They didn't have the same lives and even though a duel to the death motivated by revenge is insanity today, it was perfectly sane back then.

The noseguard is indeed to protect their nose. True, if it were to buckle, it could end up breaking their nose, but if it wasn't present, whatever force made it buckle in the first place would have impacted the face directly, which would be worse than a broken nose. As for the eyes, the reason why the helmets had openings for the eyes was because while it does leave the eyes vulnerable, it was deemed necessary for the vikings to be able to see their enemy.
