As a child in Western Montana, there were many 30-40 Krags still being used as hunting rifles, with many having been sporterized.

Fully agree Sir. I'm an avid birdwatcher and do so when walking and stalking game here in South Africa. So many times I won't get close enough for an ethical kill shot or I dont see game at all for days. Ill then slow down and enjoy watching and looking for bird and all of a sudden the bushveld will give you a Blouwildebeeste or Zebra etc 80m from you because you were calm and quiet. 90% of the joy of hunting should be to be outside and enjoying nature. Great video Sir

It's a great blessing to see someone hunt freely and without too much of a hassle, a privilege not too easily (if possible at all) attained here in the Philippines (modern guns alone can be quite difficult to acquire legally for the working man, much less antique firearms). With one of the most beautiful rifle models as well. (Quite an interesting fact that some Krags were produced in Austria!) Great video and great hunt.

The Krag-Jorgensen rifle has a big COOL factor, and is a good shooter. Lots of fun. The 6.5 a better cartridge in my opinion than the 30-40. Excellent presentation showcasing this fine firearm from yesteryears.

My style of hunting is like yours, and I’ve had a M96 Carl Gustaf in 6.5x55 since I was 15 years old, over 50 years ago. It has the 29 inch barrel and is incredibly accurate as well as giving much more velocity to the cartridge. Excellent video, looking forward for more and Merry Christmas!

YEssssss. Love the hunting videos and the historical weapons used for hunting. Especially with the older guns. Really gives you an appreciation for the hunters that had to use them, because hunting is hard and often you come from a hunt empty handed. Anyway Cheers from Estonia.

Balazs, I love when you take these old warhorses out for a hunt, and thank you for showing the field dressing of the game. If you would like to save some space and weight, you do not need the saw to split the pelvis. Simply find the raised seam where the two pelvis halves are fused together and put your knife on it and push down. It splits rather easy if you got the blade centered on the seam. After that push the legs down to the ground and it will open the split up allowing you to pull the organs through.

I had one of these for several years back in the early 80`s. It took a nice pronghorn antelope at 165 yards using the Hornady 129 grain bullet and some IMR 4320 powder. Mine looked just like yours, and I wish it was still in the safe. I`m a little jealous.

Thank you Balazs! The Krag Jørgensen in kaliber 6.5X55 Swedish, is an innovative rifle and has been used in Norway in the Volunteer Rifle Corps since 1894 as a competition-rifle, and later with a heavy barrel, right up until the 1990s, when the Sauer 200 gradually took over. Krag Jørgensen has, as you say, has one of the smoothest bolts, with which everyone else compares it selfs! It has one weakness, that it only has one forward locking lug (it also has two safety locking lugs in addition, the lever/bolthandle it self and a long lug on the side of the bolt), so with wet /oiled ammo or chamber, the shots would tend to go over to the left. This was particularly noticeable with the heavy competition rifle barrels. Greetings from Norway and Idar Ola 🤠👌

The 2600 Ft/s is in the sweet range for the non-EDL type older spitzer bullets (and soft points) and the rage reduction is actually minimal. Most people do not understand the air compression factors that affect bullets and that a slower initial velocity can be much better for accuracy. Additionally, in the faster loads, heaver barrels are usually needed to minimize the barrel harmonics that can affect bullet accuracy. The Craig-Jorgenson with its single locking lug is quite prone to barrel harmonics at the higher powder loads, thus not adequate for .30-06 rechambering Happy hunting.

I own a Steyr Krag from 1897. These were proof tested at 5000 atm or 73,480 psi. This was extremely high pressure at the time, and way above regular 6.5x55 factory loads today. It is still not recommended to fire hot loads in these old weapons because of material fatigue.
