The Nu Skin pyramid scheme scam 📼 1990 VHS 60fps

A circa 1990 promotional VHS tape for Nu Skin, a multi-level marketing (MLM) pyramid scheme selling skin care products. Except, you never get to see those products, because the point of this video was not to sell the products, it was to sell the selling. Nu Skin has been sued numerous times by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, various U.S. states, and the Chinese government, but yet is somehow still in business today, even though 93% of its distributors don't earn any commission in a typical month.
John Oliver's excellent video about MLMs (he talks about Nu Skin towards the end): • Multilevel Marketing: ...
Genetically Modified Skeptic's video about how MLMs target women: • This Is How MLMs Targe...

This is even sadder than it appears, because it isn't an official Nu-Skin pitch video. These brothers are somewhere in the pyramid, and this is THEIR pitch video to bring in the next level below them. It looks amateur because it is amateur.

I went to an MLM job interview in 2005. The idea was to sell cellphone service but it required YOU to also get the phone service and then pay $500 for some pamphlets that you then attempt to sell to others. Their claim to fame was they made more money than Microsoft in one single quarter once. Obviously the company went nowhere because that was the only time I ever heard of the company. The weird thing about the marketing tactic was they wanted you to mow other people's lawns to make a sale.

Multi-level marketing / pyramid scheme is very clearly illegal in Japan. Amway tried to have business in Japan (in 90s', I believe... maybe they haven't given up) but they couldn't because, fundamentally, their business model is pyramid scheme. How come this is still legal in the US?
@lasskinn474
@lasskinn474 Жыл бұрын
actually in usa even the biggest pyramid portion of the amway stuff is _not_ through the corporate or corporate products, the real milking of the hopefuls happens with marketing material, functions, 'educational' material etc. for amway corporate on paper most of the business comes from selling the products themselves, for the marketing teams/'families' almost all of the money comes simply from selling the dream, telling people they need to buy this and this educational function, drop their friends and listen to this tape/podcast/holo/whatever, tape that BMW on their fridge and go hog wild on recruiting and most of all remember to sell tickets to the next dream seminar... and buy the sneakers and koolaid

Pyramid scheme businesses do a lot of lobbying and donate generously to both Republicans and Democrats come election time. That has resulted in legislators passing in legal loopholes where, as long as over 50% of the profit comes from selling products and under 50% of the profits come from the pyramid scheme side of the business, pyramid scheme businesses are allowed by the law and called "multi-level marketing".
@Benzene265

It’s mostly still legal due to intense corporate lobbying and a landmark case against Amway that the FTC lost.
@rich1051414
@rich1051414 Жыл бұрын
@@Benzene265 Sadly, the US did make pyramid schemes illegal entirely, but then extra exceptions wiggled in so that they are only illegal if more than 50% of the gross income is attributed to the pyramid scheme, but that is a metric that is ripe for book cooking, so it effectively neuters the previous laws meant to prevent them. Basically, as long as most of the actual income comes from legitimate sells and not buy ins, pyramid schemes can still exist, which is outrageous.

I was invited along to the parent's house of a girl I knew, where they were having another recruitment evening for people interested in their marketing opportunity (Bioflow / Ecoflow products in England (UK) ). When I got there I sat down amongst a full room of people wanting to join, and they creeped me out. They were the classic cold, beady eyed, hand rubbing exploitative types ready to do anything for money. I politely declined to join their scheme and got out of there and never went back. The girl I knew was geniunely confused why I was not interested. Fortunately I have good intuition that I listen to, otherwise I could be taken in by all kinds of dodgy schemes. * EDIT: I just checked and Bioflow and Ecoflow are still in existence in 2022. I went to that evening back in 2002.

In some Digital Betacam cassettes that I was given I found the original camera master tape for a somewhat similar advertising video. A company, that would give you access to price comparisons. And all the money you saved by looking at their price comparisons would make you rich! All for only 99 DM annually! It took them many takes to get everything right. The most revealing moment was when one actor was confused that the script didn't mention that the 99 DM were to be paid annually. The director then told him that he had checked back with the company and they were indeed not supposed to mention that. So in the final edited video it would have seemed like you would have to only pay 99 DM once to get the service. No mention of it being an annual subscription.

That's the usual audio and video quality that I've seen in most of the recorded VHS that I used to rent in early 2000's. A few ones were pretty well recorded directly from DVD's and the audio quality was flawless Dolby Stereo, but most of them in Latin America (including original and official ones) were poorly recorded in that quality, feeding the bad reputation that VHS = Lo-Fi. Sadly, that Nu-Skin adoctrination video is one of that infamous examples of that VHS tapes.

it was the same with burned DVD's, some were an exact copy of the original DVD release of a movie with all the extra features, and other ones being pieces of trash recorded off cinema, and others with 240p quality but including 4 or 5 movies in just one dvd, which was pretty neat and somehow still looked ok in a CRT TV

The quality and production of this video reminds me of when my old school was going to be taken apart and a new school was going to be built, the students and faculty decided to do a Goodbye ceremony for the school. It was a full blown show with music and old students and teachers that was performed live, the show really was amazing. A group of "professionals" was ordered to video tape this ceremony and they took students to help with the video taping. Well I was a part of the group and the so called "professionals" screwed it all up us much as possible. They blew out the audio completely so you could not hear anything from the tape and your ears were bleeding and whenever someone spoke you had to turn the volume all the way up. I can forever remember sitting there looking at the VU meters that were not just going on the red but staying on the red. It really is a sad story because the amount of time and effort that was put into the show was wasted by inexperienced people screwing it up, and if I at the time a 15 yo kid, could see these problems I can't imagine how inexperienced and untrained these "professionals" were.

The episode is called "easy money" and it's worth watching if you have a streaming service that has the show on it. They break down how much of a joke these companies are. "Multi Level Marketing" = Pyramid Scheme.

There is actually a real product called New-Skin for skin patches, which I used to use when bowling, although it didn't work very well (which is why I don't use it anymore...I still bowl) - but it was a real product. I'll remember the smell of it forever.

this reminds me somewhat of the Tahitian Noni Juice scam my mother got caught up in during the mid 00's, but she got out of it in less than a year, as as it just became too much of a hassle along with her day job. I'll have to ask her if she still had the promo DVD as it would make for a great scam movie night 🙂

I remember that Noni Juice thing from around that same time, had no idea it was a scam. Hadn't head of it in years, but i do remember some family members that kept getting a bunch of it at the same your mother there had. Not sure how long these family members of mine were getting it for, but those are just some memories i've remembered by you mentioning that. Would be interesting to see that DVD as well, to see what that was all about back when.

I remember I was at a gas station about a year ago and this nice handsome young man started talking to me and got into about how well I spoke he said he works with some investors in some cutting edge stuff and he was going to speak to them about getting me in. I unfortunately gave him my number just to see where it went and of course he called me and it got kinda creepy but he asked me “what would you do if you made 2 mil overnight?” The big red flag was he wouldn’t tell about the name of the business or what the actually did. Come to find out it was probably an Amway thing 😂

In college I went to one thoes AMWAY seminars at a church. I felt like a bizzare religious cult, I noped out of that. My friend that invited me isn't active in that any more but his parents are. Even after 15 years. Funny thing shortly after a classmate tried recruiting me to some meetings 2 hours away when the same thing was happening in the same town we lived in.

I feel some pity for people caught up in these schemes in the 80s & 90s when information was harder to come by... How anyone falls for them these days is beyond me. I guess PT Barnum was right.

I would guess 30% of my college class got sucked into these MLM's in the 90's, it's insane. If anything, it's worse now, because the MLM's can market over the internet and social media. The dark side is that it targets friendships and destroys them. How these are not illegal is beyond me.

I fast-forwarded into the video in the hope of hearing another John Oliver clip but didn't get one, too bad ! :P As for Nu Skin, I remember my wife and I were invited by a cousin to a "great opportunity", a NS presentation. I didn't know the company by then, but I already knew MLM... Imagine my disappointment when finding out it was just another scam! We should have left as soon as I found out, we didn't, for many reasons. In the end, we agreed to at least buy some products for ourselves just to test their quality. My wife a few days later: "it's not even that great..."
