only a kick, snare and a hihat and so much variation... this shit is impressive

Glad to see a metal drummer that really appreciates the art form of drumming. This guy is good! Zach hill (not REALLY a metal drummer exactly) is another example. I can appreciate a musician of any genre that does what they love to do. Ecpecially when they can groove your face off!

hey guys! just FYI... i was playing "extreme 5b's" (nylon) in this video. but i just upgraded to "rock" (wood tip)... and so far i'm really loving the change!!! thanks for watching! xoxoxoxox

Jon Karel you are one of the maddest drummers alive dude. I only program drums, so I'd never be able to do half the stuff you do in this video alone, but it's still been inspiring my drum programming throughout the years.

i've had a conversation with jon after one of his shows, he's extremely chill. totally nice guy. and very resourceful when it comes to drumming. not to mention one of the most unique drummers today.

What I've always loved about this video is that you can feel the improv - Karel has has a general idea of the groove he's going for, but it's all dynamic. Beautiful.

I have come to this video for every drummer I play with, to point out how good it is. None of them know who he is or who The #12 were. R.I.P.

Absolutely brilliant. My old drum teacher used to do that thing where he'd put a hi-hat on the snare and play drum 'n' bass beats with it. Always sounded awesome, and Jon Karel really explores every sound you can possibly make with something. Amazing drummer.

I think he used to play snare or tenors in his high school marching band, looking at his technique and use of rimshots.

It's an Axis drive shaft haha! cobra with axis drive shaft is super cool combo imo.
'tis an iron cobra, yes. and a Tama 8x14 Starclassic G-Maple snare with an Evans Power Center Reverse Dot batter and Hazy 300 reso, 40 strand snares. I believe he recently made the switch to Aquarian, but I'm not positive. This month's Modern Drummer has an article about him and all of his gear.

The #12 looks like you is mathcore and if you listen to a lot of mathcore you will notice some jazz sounding stuff in there. Jazz is a big influence for mathcore.

one place to start that he was telling me at a lesson was to first get a light, heel up, feathering going with the foot you are working on for the swivel...from there you move the motion into the swivel...start slower...use a metronome. Hope this helps you a little bit at least!

Looks like a variation of Buddy Rich's "push pull" technique. Search it on youtube, there are plenty of tutorials. Jojo Mayer does it REALLY well and I think he has a video explaining it on youtube too. It's fucking hard though, so don't expect to get it any time soon lol.

Does anyone know what songs these are in, if they're in a song that is (specifically the part with the cymbal on the snare) These don't sound like anything from the number 12 (besides that bit from the garden's all nighters), which leads me to believe they're a horse the band song.
