He's just pulling y'all's leg. Rip is vegan. I saw him leaving yoga class the other day. He was wearing yoga pants and no shoes and he threw his yoga mat in the back of his Kia Soul. He saw me and said "Hey, James! I'm going to head over and get a vegan scramble after I finish this detox tea; care to join?" I declined because I was busy. In parting, he gave me a hug and said "Namaste."

"We were talking about cannibalism the other day." Not wasting any time getting started I see. Seriously, though, this reminds me of something Dan John wrote about dieting with his clients: start with good food. Every day, eat 1 pound of lean meat/fish, 1 cup of oats, 2 pieces of fruit, 3 cups of vegetables, and a potato, and drink a quart of milk and half a gallon of water. If you are still hungry after all that, you can have a piece of cake for dessert.

I know he's not much of a talker, but Robert is by far the best nutritionist you've had. He's very grounded and right on the money with what he says, without making things too complicated. Nutrition isn't rocket science. It isn't even an exact science at all. This is why Robert keeps giving us something general, to then tweak as an individual. He knows what he's doing.

For any of those that are trying to apply what was said to a Keto diet. The mantra goes: Protein is goal Carbs are a limit Fat is a lever The only difference between what Robert is going for and a keto version is how high is the limit on carbs. After 2 years of Keto for me and going (for blood sugar control), I think that Robert's version is likely the more successful approach. Don't get fooled on the hype of Keto, it has its applicability to some circumstances. But I have seen way too many people who can't sustain it. And as we all know: "Compliance is the science." - Stan Efferding

Agreed. As a diabetic I have to choose between carb restriction or massive doses of exogenous insulin (which makes fat loss very difficult and tends to cause fat gain). Fortunately, I can confirm that I have plenty of energy to workout (and frankly my lifts are probably much better than those who disagree with me).

17:40 you are getting very close to describing the Paradox of Choice. Not only do people screw up when they have excessive choices/variety, they are less happy. More than about 3 or 4 options makes it too hard for most people to make a choice they are happy with.

On a related note regarding B12, for anyone using a PPI (I used to take Pantoprazole, which stops stomach acid from being produced) they should be taking a B12 supplement, because it is the stomach acid that gets the B12 from food, and you're likely to be B12 deficient if you don't take a supplement while on a PPI, or while taking any drug that even reduces stomach acid.. I mention it because I had been taking a PPI prescription for years before I read about how B12 should be supplemented - my doctor never mentioned it, and I just happened upon an article - which I then mentioned to my doctor (not the one who had prescribed the PPI, but anyway), and she concurred that a B12 supplement was in order...

Protein from meat gets digested in the stomach, humans don't have the enzymes in the stomach to digest plants meaning the digestion of plants doesn't begin till the plants reach the intestines, at this point you can only pull a fraction of the nutrients from the plants... the nutrients may be in the plant but they're not bio-available to humans.

Mark Rippetoe mentioned a gallon of milk in the episode. I think drinking a gallon of water is better than drinking a gallon of milk. While people tend to focus a lot on nutrition when it comes to strength and performance, people tend to overlook hydration and how dehydration can hinder performance. People can drink mineral water or coconut water for electrolytes.

Since vegetables and fruits have a lot of fiber and water and contribute to the feeling of satiety, it may not be possible to eat large quantities of them by chewing along. Blending fruits and vegetables into a smoothie or putting them through a juicer will allow a person to consume them much quicker. I think drinking fruit and/or vegetable smoothies would be a better alternative to drinking 6 protein shakes a day.

I prefer my whey isolate to meat. It takes a long time to digest a pound of beef compared to a great quality whey protein. Add some oats, banana, frozen fruit, natural PB, spinach - bam. Complete meal. I make two of these a day, plus a couple whole food meals. Also, I NEVER eat beef that isn't minced. Keep in mind it's not about eating "protein". It's about eating and absorbing protein. All those "strength bellies" we see in the strength community is nothing more than undigested food in the bowels. I used to have a HUGE, distended belly full of SHIT (Yes, that's what it is). You guys eat too much too. I think far too many strength athletes are closet emotional eaters. Why train so hard, but eat like a fat slob? It makes no sense. Look at strength athletes like Jouko Ahola. To me - that is an ideal athlete
