It's hard for me to admit this, but i used to be just like David Brent when I was a manager. I used to hold my staff hostage as my audience and make them listen to what I had to say or what I thought was funny. I'm so embarrassed when I look back. The sad thing is that I'd already seen The Office when I was doing it and that still wasn't enough to stop me.

Maybe you missed the scene with Malcolm at the party which shows that Brent didn't turn down the promotion altruistically to save his team from losing their jobs, but failed a medical preventing him from getting it. people shouldn't compare the original office to the us version. they're completely different shows made for two different audiences. british humour is very subtle and surreal which is why it's so funny. i'm irish and grew up watching british television, so i understand it. the office us is very straightforward american humor
@shaunhunterit342 Жыл бұрын
The main failing of the US show is Michael Scott was never fired. They even had him quit and come back in a stronger position. Just shows the concept of the original show was never meant for the US.

As much as David ballsed everything up, you could also see that Malcolm’s character was always a bit of a pain in the arse too lol I always thought it was interesting how after the amalgamation of the branches in season 2, he wasn’t there. It was a subtle nod back to the “you’re not gonna lose your job, you’re not gonna lose your job, you’re not…you know” scene.
@darraghmccormack358010 ай бұрын
Don't think he was a pain though. He was just worried about losing his job. In fairness to Malcolm, he's the only one who had the bottle stand up to Brent and call him out on his nonsense (until Neil came). Ironically, Malcolm likely lost his job as a result, which is probably pretty accurate to what would happen in the real world too

Brent is so "creepy" and is such a "sleaze", yet he comes across in such a sly/clever manner and ensures he does not cross the line. The following statement out of so many is a prime example: "You're not going to fiddle with my children... I am, if anyone does". Malcolm: “Yes. I trust you”. Yeah, alright mate.. only if you knew that you are going to get shafted. No one knows no one. Everyone is out for themselves! 🔥

Always thought Malcolm was a bit out of order in this scene. When he says "and are you gonna let her?" when it's obviously out of David's hands. Malcolm was probably a troublemaker, maybe why David was keen to get rid of him.
@LucyOLastic9 күн бұрын
Malcolm would be a union rep if there was a union in that office. Probably be a good one too. I'm sure you wouldn't be alone in thinking he was a troublemaker just like Brent does. It's always "out of his hands..." even when he's making the forklift driver redundant: "this has been imposed upon me...." Malcolm sees through his bullshit. Jennifer appealed to Brent's vanity when offering him her job....he soon betrayed their trust! And only Malcolm knew the real reason he eventually turned down the job to save the branch and their jobs.
