Scalp irritation can lead to hair loss. I recently discovered that I am allergic to "itchy-Ms" (Methylchloroisothiazolinone and Methylisothiazolinone) which are present in many haircare products. Getting rid of them resolved my hair shedding issue within a week. I suspect this lawsuit (and Tresseme, Divacurl, Ogx etc) are about ingredients causing scalp sensitives in some people. It is hard to notice immediately because our scalp is hidden. I suspect if this lawsuit gains steam, Olaplex will do a some independent testing that will reveal nothing because their formulas are fine for most people. I really wish there was more education about potential allergens in haircare like we do for skincare instead of this fear mongering.

That's what I said in my comment I mentioned methylchloroisothiazolinone back in the day a girl on a hair forum said she was diagnosed allergic to this ingredient so these people probably were allergic to DMDM hydantoin, that's why these brands should learn the lesson and learn from salon or organic brands, just remove these ingredients, improve your formula! In my country Garnier changed many formulas to satisfy customers and for marketing, OGX and Tresemme weren't smart enough to do it before the backlash they wanted to keep using cheaper ingredients thinking the masses were too dumb to notice but they were wrong! And this is coming from someone who uses a hair oil from OGX and methylisothiazolinone from time to time, I'm just saying they were stupid especially in terms of marketing and green products being on trend! They should learn the lesson and remove that ingredient and move on.

Hi Abbey. Thank you for this very well made video. I handle civil lawsuits all day every day and really wish more people understood that a lawsuit filed does not mean anything definitive and a Plaintiff’s petition is just an extremely one sided set of allegations. I can also answer that yes in every state for civil lawsuits anyone can file a lawsuit against anyone for anything and no you do not need an attorney. Anyone can file a lawsuit themselves and anyone can defend a lawsuit themselves.

Hey Abby! I had a nightmare hair scenario happen in 2018 - I mixed Olaplex with a protein treatment and left it on for hours. I lost sooooo much hair. It snapped off like a rubber band. I don't blame Olaplex at all because I mixed two chemicals together which never should have been mixed. I like your mindset on this. I think because Olaplex is probably the most widely used used product out there it presents the potential for people to get affected by it. Not every product will work the same for everyone and that is something we as consumers have to remember. I've had bad reactions to many hair and skincare products before realizing I have sensitive skin, which cannot be blamed on the products I used. I really think most people aren’t considering how covid had an impact on their body, let alone hair. My hair was always on the thinner side, but post covid in the household at least 2x (plus the effects of postpartum/kids) it’s gotten way worse. That’s what made me turn to Olaplex in the first place. But I realize hair health is more than the products I use topically! Between Amika, Olaplex, starting oils, clarifying AND trying iron and pumpkin seed oils AND microfiber towels, silk pillowcases AND time AND realistic expectations, with time I’m seeing some improvements.

Olaplex works great for me, but I tried Briogeo shampoo a couple times and it left my hair in wads and knots of dry, straw-like hair. It was terrible. But I noticed it immediately so it was definitely that product. So many other people love Briogeo and have no problems with it. So I think it mostly just comes down to personal body chemistry. My hair has never been the same since olaplex was used in a colour service. I had amazing shiny hair and my new hairdresser was using the product in her salon so I just accepted that. Glad I didn’t have worse happen. Don’t discard these women or their stories. For reference: I only ever have semi’s and have long thick hair. I had an extremely uncomfortable scalp reaction (dryness, burning, excess hair shedding) that I've never experienced with any other product, after using Olaplex as directed. The results on my lengths were really encouraging at first but the scalp irritation had me running out in a panic for oils to soothe and moisturize my skin. (I do know many people who experienced hair loss after covid infection around the same time, but I was working from home with little risk of exposure and had not been ill.) About a year later I was frustrated enough with some bleach damage that I was about to chop my hair off entirely, and I decided to first give Olaplex one more chance. That time, I only applied it to my ends and completely avoided my scalp, which worked out okay for me. I don't plan to use it again (I've stopped color-treating my hair to avoid damage in the first place) but I think it can be a helpful product for some people, perhaps best used sparingly or with a patch test before proceeding.

I used Olaplex a few years ago and had MASSIVE hair loss, hair damage, breakage, etc. It happened every time I used it…hair would literally come out in clumps. At first, I thought maybe it was just natural shedding and tried it a few more times and the damage only got worse. I searched high and low to see if that was something that happened to anyone else and had no luck. My stylist told me she thought it was something to do with too much keratin between Olaplex and my hair. I was very upset this wasn’t stated anywhere, not even in any other reviews…and thought I was crazy at first. I know tons of people love it, but for me and my hair type…..it was a nightmare. I just wish they would state that for some people, there’s major hair damage possible. I know many people have great results, but just know for a small amount of us it was awful. I only tried Olaplex once and never would again. It left my hair gummy and my scalp was so irritated. I use K18 regularly and could not understand the hype around Olaplex when a far superior product is on the market now. Also enjoying Epres. This is also just my experience but I don't doubt that there is something to the claims. Lawsuits don't mean that they are in the wrong but they also don't mean they are in the right either. $75000 also doesn't seem like a lot and so I don't think this is about the money. Guess we'll see.

Lawyer here, and apologies if this has been brought up already, but when a Complaint says it's seeking "over $75,000" in damages that's just so that it can meet the threshold high enough for it to make it into federal court (amongst other jurisdictional requirements). At the pleading stage the only number that matters to the court, but the full damages won't be estimated until further discovery. For what it's worth, if it says they're seeking punitive damages you're pretty much guaranteed they'll be asking for something well into the millions.

I disagree with some things here. First of all Olaplex would cause less problems if they state somewhere on their stuff that you shouldn''t use it too close to using stuff with Keratin/Proteins). And what I asked myself about the Formaldehyd thing: Do you really want that stuff on your head? I read here on a German blogger site from quite a few girls that they experienced hair breakage, hair loss after Olaplex being used on their bleaching/balayage service. Same with K18. Made my hair break a ton and I was so protective about it and wanted it to work for my hair. But even with a lot moisture products I had breakage hell loose with K18.

Really great video! I’ve had hits and misses with olaplex - the shampoo hasn’t worked for me at all but the no. 3 and 7 were great. But I made the personal decision to switch out the shampoo and not continue using it so I haven’t had any long-lasting issues. I know I have sensitive skin so unless a brand markets itself as a sensitive skin brand, I expect there is a risk for irritation when using something new on my skin.

Very interesting the testing criteria, and who was not included in the testing. As someone who had a terrible allergic reaction to Olaplex - it looked like I had chemical burns on my skin -I stopped using it. I have a history of contact dermatitis and allergic reactions to foods and numerous products. Who knows what caused the issue. Do I feel it necessary to sue Olaplex? Personally for me, no. I have had to discontinue use of other products in the past. I actually did like how my hair was while using it. What I do find interesting is how many people who know I had an issue with it have reached out to me to let me know this is goin on.

So many people have loved it but I am seeing more and more people say the line completely ruined their hair when they started using it and that was the case with me. My hair started breaking off all over my head with those little white beads despite nothing else in my routine changing (I blow dry my hair on warm and never use curlers or any other heat). YES! I was waiting to see if you might comment on the Olaplex stuff. :) Thank you for making this video. I recently started Olaplex. I did have COVID back in 2021 and my hair didn't fall out. It did, though, break off completely (my hair was maybe mid-ish down my back and had to be chopped to my shoulders cause there was almost nothing left of it). I don't dye/bleach it, but do use mild heat cause my hair is wavy. I have to weigh out the damage caused by it being wet for hours vs diffusing on mid heat (with heat protectant). Anyways, I used Olaplex twice as I want to do the best for my hair as it was chopped in April 2022. I'm trying to grow it out. After 2 uses, though... I noticed breakage. Hairs I knew were longer were now snapped off and towards the top of my head. Do I know for certain it's Olaplex? No, but I'm quite suspicious that's the cause of it because of the timing. Now I'm trying to figure out what to do and how to fix this without any worsening damage. I won't lie... I'm a little devastated as my hair was really starting to look pretty good/healthy.

I got number 3 from Cosmoprof, I had a lot of heat damage had no hair fall or breakage or extreme dryness but I did have heat damage hair looking dull a little rough some broken pieces at the front etc. I used it exactly as advised left it on not even for 5 minutes and ran my fingers through my hair and strands from the root were falling out like crazy and breakage I quickly rinsed it out. However my hair after 3 months is still like hay, breaking it looks like someone literally fried my hair. My hair has never felt like this and it only felt like this literally from the minute I rinsed it out. I haven’t gotten my hair colored or changed any products. It was the olaplex. It took two months for the hair to stop falling, I went to a dermatologist ran tests and everything, blood and everything was fine, she concluded that my hair entered into telogen effluvium due to the olaplex 3. People need to stop saying that just because it works for them that it can’t have horrendous results on someone else or that they must be using something fake. Get a clue.

Just FRAGRANCE can cause sensitivity, skin irritation, and blistering. At this point, I’d want independent testing not paid for or controlled by Olaplex. The company started out as a stellar innovator for bleach damaged hair, but now after buy out it has shifted to being for all hair. Not all products work for all hair types. Marketing is definitely an issue, especially for pushing using the entire line up. I have had a lot of people in my community come to me about it causing dryness, brittleness, and breakage.

Olaplex 4 and 5 are not meant to be used over long periods of time. They are meant to be used to repair severely damaged hair. If you don’t have severely damaged hair you probably won’t see much results from using them. It’s really odd on olaplex’s part because they don’t market their products the way they should be used. The only products that are really meant for long term use is their styling products which is 6,7,9 and their dry shampoo. All of the other numbers are meant for repairing severely damaged hair. 0 is pretty much pointless all around. 3 is the only repair product from them I think actually does what it is supposed to. But I find that following their directions and leaving it on 10 minutes doesn’t work. You need to leave it on longer. I leave mine in for 30+ minutes and it made a huge difference for me. Olaplex is also not for all hair types which they don’t really disclose when marketing it

I saw this reported by NPR a few days ago. I thought for a few minutes, and will keep using Olaplex. Before using it, I was getting dry, frizzy, broken lengths and ends ... nothing helped. One use of #8 (the mask) made an enormous difference - my hair looked great again. I was shocked, in a good way. As with any strong product, I use it in a minimalist way. I only apply it on my lengths and ends, it goes nowhere near my scalp. I use it just often enough to maintain my hair, which for me is once a month. I normally shed hair every autumn; this year I shed a lot more than usual. No COVID, but I am going through a health issue that's hard on my body ... and stress makes hair shedding worse. I know Olaplex has nothing to do with my shedding, as I started using it 8 months before I had any shedding at all. Some people have reactions to some products and ingredients, even ones that are safe for almost everyone. That's why you should go carefully with any new product, especially one as unique as Olaplex. And having a test product not work is *not* grounds for a lawsuit!

I learned recently that using too many hair products (shampoo, conditioner) with protein can cause "protein overload" and actually weaken the hair and cause breakage and hair loss. Now I make sure to read ingredient listings to know if products contain protein. The shampoo and conditioner I use now do not contain protein, and I only use a protein deep conditioning treatment such as Amika The Kure once every couple of weeks, and I make sure not to leave it on too long (follow directions on label). In between, I use deep conditioning treatments that don't contain any protein such as Briogio's Avocado treatment. If it doesn't contain protein, you can leave it on as long as you like! I'm so glad I learned about this because I didn't know that leaving a protein deep conditioner on too long was not good for my hair. Now that I'm aware, I alternate products so that I'm not always using products that contain protein.

I was hoping you were going to address this. I have used these products for 2 years and see a difference. I haven’t had a chance to look that deeply into it yet but plan to. I did see several of the complaints were from people who noticed those changes in the first month. Several times in my life I have gotten stress induced alopecia. Not to the point where I’m bald but definitely my hair is falling out and clogging the drain. Stress can be medical or just stress. I’m vaccinated, boosted etc but I got it mid Aug and it did a number on me. I’m just now getting to where I feel like my energy level is back but it was around Oct that I realized the hair issue had started again. My neurologist said she’s seen this with several patients after Covid. I need to look into exactly how the study was done but this is one thing to keep in mind. Say you’re looking at a normal package insert on a Rx drug and looking at all the side effects that were observed during the study. You’ll always see deaths and a number beside it. This doesn’t mean the patient died from a side effect from the drug. They could have been enrolled in the study and gotten killed in a car accident and it’s going to be recorded as a death in the PI. I was in medical sales for 30 years pharmaceutical and medical device. The amount of misinformation that gets put out is unreal. My husband even walked in yesterday and told me to stop using olaplex and this man knows zero about medicine or how to read a drug study. It doesn’t take much to get a lawyer to take a case (my family is full of them. Too many attorneys at the moment) and the unfortunate part is that many times in this type situation the company will pay something to settle because they’ll do the math and realize that will be cheaper than continuing to fight. Remember this is probably class action and it’s not costing any of the consumers to add their name. The attorneys usually get paid when they win the case. I am going to research this but my initial impression is I don’t think this brand is any more likely to cause these issues than any other brand but because they are claiming to prevent this issue they are probably setting themselves up more for a suit like this to be filed. I absolutely hate to see a co pay out in this situation but it happens all the time. One more ex. I used to have a condo at a very well known beach resort. Alligators all over the place and signs everywhere warning. Couple years ago there was an incident that made national news. When I was talking with our property manager who dealt with our rentals she said almost every summer something happens. Maybe not getting killed but a golfer and she did actually say older golfer will have his ball land close to one of those ponds where the alligators are and will reach in to get it and have his arm attacked by the alligator. The resort immediately pays out a lot of money to try and keep it quiet. Keep in mind I said there are signs everywhere and you can constantly see them sunning themselves under a tree on the golf course so it’s not like these golfers don’t know they are there.

I was told by a distributor of Olaplex that the shampoo/cond. is not for everyday use. Once your hair becomes healthier after initial use, you should only use once a week to maintain. BOND MAINTENANCE. It will dry your hair and cause breakage. So if you don’t have an allergic reaction, try using it once a week.

I lost my hair, I went to a specialist who said it is to emotional distress but then I learned about olaplex. My hair is thin, my scalp balding and massive hair loss. I then met a family friend who went through the same thing.

Would you consider reviewing Philip Kingsley elasticiser? I’ve been using redken and olaplex but recently tried the PK and my hair was so smooth!! I’ve realised my hair has definitely needed a good moisture type mask regardless of olaplex

Olaplex # 1 /7; 2 is a MUST HAVE when I"m getting my bleach hi-lites. My colorist has been using it for many, many years on me. Anytime a colorist has used any other bonder such as Redken's or Brazilian I have had major hair damage. So I INSIST my colorist ALWAYS use OLAPLEX # 1 & 2 during the hi-lighting bleach process. I also use the Olaplex shampoo, conditioner, masks, oil & serum for long time with phenomenal consistent results. I have a hard time believing this causes hair loss. Must be a competitor, of the Beauty Mafia, trying to undermine Olaplex.

Olaplex 3 has helped my breakage prone hair so much. But I only use it once a week. Maybe sensitivities or over use is causing some ppl to experience negative side effects.

This happened to me - super weird. I used it for about 2 months and at the end I was losing hair in chunks and my scalp had so much acne possibly sores and was inflamed. It was so frustrating because it made my actual hair feel incredible - so I changed my water filter, upped how often I washed my hair, did scalp massages - ultimately I had to part ways and got a clarifying shampoo. Now I’m feeling better and my scalp is about 80% normal.

Ain't gonna lie...as a newer consumer of Olaplex...less than 6 mos...I immediately stopped using it last week when I heard about the lawsuit. I actually watched more of your videos to see what drugstore products I could use bc I honestly can't afford Pureology and Olaplex was a stretch on my pocketbook to purchase already. Thanks for addressing this topic!

The same thing happened with deva curl used it forever then the claims came of hair loss scalp issues . I never experienced this using it and was unfortunate bc I miss using the products. After the re-launched it wasnt the same products that I knew and enjoyed prior 😔. I dont think the products were for everyone bc why didnt everyone experience these issues when the ingredients in deva were also in many other brands .

Wow.. I recently stopped using the olaplex shampoo and conditioner after exclusively using it since March 2022. I lost an insane amount of hair, about 2/3 of it, and then with what hair i had left, had this very strange breakage happen at the bottom half of my hair and now have a shelf of hair under the scraggly long hair that lays over. To be fair, I got covid in April and wanted to attribute my hair loss to that but after seeing multiple articles about this happening to other olaplex users, decided to stop using it completely. I love the bond smoother and oil and cannot prove that the shampoo/ conditioner caused this but it's been extremely traumatic and my confidence has plummeted. I truly hope that whatever needs to get figured out does!

@Brittany Coulter I appreciate the support! I'm so sorry you're experiencing this, too. I did get extensive blood panels done and they found nothing wrong with my thyroid or labs. It's truly a mystery, hence why I don't want to insert myself into the lawsuit. I cannot prove that it was solely from Olaplex damage! Keep strong my friend. We are certainly not the only folks going through it!

@Frank Velez ya know.. I think I'm just going to let the others who truly know that olaplex was the sole culprit in their hair damage/loss take it from here. Like I said, I did get covid during the time.

I have never used the Olaplex shampoo or conditioner, but I did have Covid in July of 2021 and a few months after Covid I had extreme hair loss. I ended up losing over half of my hair. I went to the dermatologist, and he was no help at all. I ended up using a thickening shampoo from Rusk which helped (I think) my hair started to feel thicker, but then it dried my hair out. So, after the hair fall stopped, I was left with a new crazy texture on my hair, I hated it!! I had most of it cut off in layers and have been using the Olaplex #3 and following that with a deep conditioning mask for a few months and my hair has grown back thick and healthy. I use the Wella Elements shampoo and conditioners from Cosmoprof. I am praying for you and your hair; I know how traumatic it all is.

Would love to see you talk about drugstore dry shampoo recalls. Almost every brand ar the drug store has had a recall on dry shampoo in the last year. Amika sent consumers an email reassuring them that their dry shampoo does not contain the ingredients that drugstore dry shampoo contain.

Yes, Amika dry shampoo did not fall into that category nor did Living Proof, the only 2 I use. Funny. I never received an email from Amika, after being a 3 yr long customer, a ride or die tier member and spent God knows how many hundreds I have spent on their products. I no longer order from their website any longer. Sad, because I have 11,800 points and they did bother to send me an email telling me those points were going to expire if I didn't use them. Sorry, Amika. Keep your points and I will order from a 3rd party.

Omg I found your channel about 2 hours ago. I have brittle hair sores on my scalp. My hair dresser at Ulta suggested it. I have a ton of breakage. I got on KZfaq to see what I can do to fix it. That’s how I found your channel and this video. I love the scent from olaplex but I will immediately stop using it and see what happens. Now I need to find another hair care line. I also had a ton of hair loss. I normally lose some when I shampoo but I am losing a lot more. I wrap my hair in a microfiber towel after I wash it I don’t use heat if I do it’s very little. I also haven’t used any other products or had my hair highlighted that’s because my hair is in such bad shape. Before I used this brand I was using nature lab Tokyo and love that. But I’d like to try something else. Any suggestions on a good repairing shampoo and conditioner

I am biracial, black and white so my hair is very curly and fuzzes up pretty quickly. I use olaplex 00 and olaplex 3 pre -shampoo. Then I shampoo with olaplex 4 and condition with olaplex 5. OMG! When I blow and flat iron my hair, it feels soft like baby hair and is shiny like a silk press. I’m grateful that I’ve had nothing but great experience with Olaplex.

Very interesting. I invested in pretty much all of the olaplex set. It has sat in a box for nearly a year now because I hate it. I have never had ANY reaction to anything, I do not have sensitive skin or scalp, nothing. I used the olaplex shampoo once, straight after it was dried my scalp was SO itchy. It had scabs and this went on for a week. I switched back to my Pureology shampoo and was fine. I stupidly decided to try the shampoo again a little while later as the guilt of not using something so expensive got to me. Again the same thing happened, unbearable, itchy, sore, scabby scalp. The worst! I used the rest of the products 0, 3, 6, 7, 8 as they were not being applied to my scalp and my hair is 100% in much worse condition than before these products. It has definitely ruined my hair for sure! It is the thinnest ever, so brittle dry frizzy it’s destroyed.

My understanding is that since our hair and scalp often doesn't start showing symptoms until months after the irritating event/substance occurred/was used making an accurate correlation can be difficult. Also, didn't Chaz Dean's Wen have similar complaints? What happened with that?
@tst.v2926
@tst.v2926 Жыл бұрын
Wen was a cowash. It’s like the using conditioner and not washing hair. Some people do great with cowash. Some lose hair. I’m also not going to say ingredients couldn’t cause issues too. Yes there were lawsuits over wen. I believe they were a lot more than olaplex.
@tst.v2926

Wen settled their lawsuit for like 26 mil I think. I’ve just started thinking of stopping olaplex. I think I’m getting protein overload. I don’t use continuously. My worry with it is that there’s what 9 versions. If it’s adding protein (I didn’t think it did but I think I’m wrong) breakage is a sign of too much. No one should be using all this stuff daily but we’ve assumed it’s fine. I don’t believe it is.

I’ve been using ola plex for some time. I’ve been watching your videos and they have been helpful for me. With that being said, I have thick course curly hair that has been damaged in the past by not using heat protectants. I make sure I follow ALL DIRECTIONS on the bootle before I use it in myself, and I don’t sway in any way shape or form. If the product says leave in for five min I do just that. I really like the product and I will continue to use it. My damaged hair had been very soft and healthy feeling and I am grateful this product works wonders on me.

I get a bit frustrated with how often people blame products for “allergic reactions”. It may be the case for the individual, but it doesn’t mean it’s an issue for everyone. As long as all the ingredients are listed on the label, the brand isn’t hiding anything, even if the consumer isn’t aware of their allergies. Patch testing is important. It’s not a cat’s fault for my allergies-it’s an issue with how my immune system interacts with it.
