Netflix's new movie The Old Guard starring Charlize Theron quickly rose up to be their most watched movie, and understandably so as it has quite a few strengths that make it an entertaining watch, especially now since there are no new film releases coming out. But perhaps the biggest strength of The Old Guard altogether is something that ties it to another recent wannabe-blockbuster that didn't do so well, Gemini Man starring Will Smith. That strength being the use of an original concept. Like I mentioned in my video "Gemini Man -- How to Fail at Concept", Gemini Man made a few mistakes relating to its concept that made the whole thing fall apart. And now The Old Guard comes along and aces those mistakes to great success. And in today's Film Perfection, let's see what are the differences in how these two films utilize their concept to know what to keep in mind in order to succeed at it.

The Old Guard (2020)
Forever is harder than it looks. Led by a warrior named Andy (Charlize Theron), a covert group of tight-knit mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die have fought to protect the mortal world for centuries. Gemini Man (2019)
Director Ang Lee’s American science fiction thriller features Will Smith, Clive Owen, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Benedict Wong. Smith plays a middle-aged assassin who is considering a career change when he is unexpectedly confronted with a younger clone of himself. The latter has a preternatural and potentially deadly ability to anticipate his thoughts and actions.
-
Inception (2010)
Visionary filmmaker Christopher Nolan (Memento, The Dark Knight) writes and directs this psychological sci-fi action film about a thief who possesses the power to enter into the dreams of others. Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) doesn't steal things, he steals ideas. By projecting himself deep into the subconscious of his targets, he can glean information that even the best computer hackers can't get to. In the world of corporate espionage, Cobb is the ultimate weapon. But even weapons have their weakness, and when Cobb loses everything, he's forced to embark on one final mission in a desperate quest for redemption. This time, Cobb won't be harvesting an idea, but sowing one. Should he and his team of specialists succeed, they will have discovered a new frontier in the art of psychic espionage. They've planned everything to perfection, and they have all the tools to get the job done. Their mission is complicated, however, by the sudden appearance of a malevolent foe that seems to know exactly what they're up to, and precisely how to stop them.

Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
Oscar® nominee Tom Cruise (the "Mission: Impossible" films, "Collateral," "Jerry Maguire") and Emily Blunt ("The Devil Wears Prada," "The Adjustment Bureau") star in Warner Bros. Pictures' and Village Roadshow Pictures' sci-fi thriller "Edge of Tomorrow," under the direction of Doug Liman ("The Bourne Identity," "Mr. & Mrs. Smith"). The epic action of "Edge of Tomorrow" unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Major William Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission.

Also, the movie has very interesting characters that show different aspects of the concept. Take Nicky and Joe - they aren't alone in their immortality, which would alleviate the "being immortal sucks because they can't live a life/have loved ones" problem. But then they have to constantly worry about their immortality stopping and one of them leaving the other behind. Showing this angle too really gives so much depth to the movie. And they're just damn awesome characters and have an awesome romantic story.

You didnt touch at all the fact that one of them actually died and they tell you that BEFORE they tell you that the other one got locked up. They explain that for some reason one day you just become mortal again so the stakes are there all along. In fact you can see that they worry when one of them dies because they dont know if its permanent. I think that that concept alone makes it more interesting than most movies. However watching the whole thing and the result of those stakes...The second movie has to raise the stakes by a ton, or actually deliver for once.

@android19willpwn

Having both potential bad outcomes is extremely useful, honestly. The fact that at some point you stop coming back adds a little bit of tension to every death and allows Charlise's character to have life-or-death stakes in the second half, but at least on a subconscious level every viewer will know that it's an arbitrary consequence. It will come into play if and when the writers decide to press the button, and not as a result of anything any of the characters do. The only thing they could do is avoid death as much as possible, which you can't have them do too successfully because otherwise you're not doing anything with your movie's core interesting premise. Thus, the possibility of eternal capture. It doesn't present much immediate tension in a fight scene, but it allows for mounting consequences and negative outcomes as a result of things that happen in-world.

Actually, you're having a really good point. The actors did a great job, too, in making their worry and fear come across realistically. I started worrying that any of the others might start dying because Andy lost it, Booker healed much much slower... who wouldn't think there's a good chance the others might stop. I loved how Nicky's healing was super fucking fast.

Part of the concept was how well fighting scenes are. Especially, just how smooth coordination between all members of the Guard is. When I watched the movie, what kept my interest, before the immortality reveal, was that they were all carrying medieval weapons. I kept thinking, why would elite mercenaries, obviously skilled in modern weaponry carry these things on a mission. It almost subconsciously says to the viewer "there is more to these characters, keep watching to find out what". Something small, that I think really helped the opening act.

It could be due to their respective ages. They were all probably raised on medieval weapons, with firearms being a relatively new thing for them. Thus, they've stuck to their original gear, which they've mastered after centuries, and which also never jams or runs out of ammo. Yeah, guns are necessary in a firefight, but Andy's crew can simply soak up enemy bullets, then get up and start swinging.

Watched Old Guard last night with the wife, we thoroughly enjoyed it. It kept reminding me of what Filmento says: - Characters have their personality and skills SHOWN to us, not told - Action scenes are used for character development - Characters have different personalities and constantly have to CHOOSE what they will do - Surprisingly, no superman syndrome (you'll see why!) - Lead being female has no connotations: Charlize could of been a guy Looks like Filmento is both entertaining and educational!

- Lead being female has no connotations: Charlize could of been a guy I dunno, I felt the feminist messaging during the entire run of the film, even if it wasn't blatantly overt. I think the whole point of the "Old Guard" in the movie is that it is led by a woman; typically, that's a phrase used to refer to men in some kind of leadership position. Here, it's a woman who is the oldest, first, and best. And then she finds a new girl, who is now gonna be the best. This movie is attempting a "changing of the guard", so to speak, and it doesn't feel like a coincidence. All the good, main, useful characters are women, and all the bad guys are men. Men burn witches and throw them into oceans, men try to profit from this immortality serum, men are all the villains. The only men that aren't villains are the gay immortal guys, and they are talked down to by other men, "what is he, your *boyfriend*?", because men are so homophobic and bad. Charlize could never have been a guy, because then the movie's central theme (feminism, not immortality) wouldn't make any sense.

Enjoyed this movie, and I enjoyed that it managed to make all 5 of the "heroes" unique with memorable quirks and personalities. In most movies with a "team" (established superhero-movies not included), usually only the protagonist and possibly deuteragonist is remembered after the credits start rolling, but in The Old Guard, not only was Andy and Nile well established characters, but Booker, Joe and Nicky got plenty of screen time to do impressions on the viewer as well. With that said, the movie wasn't perfect (which movie is?), but especially the soundtrack-department could've done much better. I'll give it a solid 7/10, and I'll watch the sequel.

Sounds good on paper, but there are three big problems with that. 1. It's next to impossible to keep secrets these days, especially when your marketing team desperately want to tell them to everyone. 2. If your intro is too long, the audience will think that' your movie, and won't like the twist. Or more precisely some will like your original promise and get disappointed by the change and others will like the actual movie and would want more of that, at the expense of a long intro. And it's even worse if your marketing is all about something that's not your actual movie. 3. Movies are short, the long intro won't leave you enough time to explore your cool concept. Unless you make a 3+ hour movie. You can, just make sure it's worth my time. You can pull it off, but it's hard. 1. You have to build up credit with your audience. Do several movies with similar twists, first show it early, then slowly build up to longer intros. Your audience will know that they will get a treat, and the longer anticipation will make them enjoy it more. This also solves the marketing issue, people will know what to expect without knowing the actual twist. 2. Your intro has to be cool on it's own. Otherwise your audience will feel like you are forcing them to eat their spinach before giving them their favorite dessert. 3. You still can't have two different movies. You have to tie the two haves together seamlessly. 4. The longer you build up the anticipation, the cooler the twist must be. If you oversell it, the audience will be disappointed. 5. Another trick to avoid the two different movies problem is foreshadowing. You have to keep hinting at the twist, without telling it. The key phrase is "surprising, yet inevitable". And yes, I was thinking about this for a while. I have a few cool ideas where the whole point is to completely shock the audience with the twist. The long buildup is absolutely necessary, because the audience has to think they fully understand the world, before I pull the rug from under them. Something like that was done masterfully in one of the episodes of Castle. It's a cop show, so the rules of the world are pretty much the same as the real world's. But in one episode, several dozen episodes in, they find zombies. The trick the writers used is that they showed a zombie early, but only on a few frames of a video, so it was easy to dismiss. Then slowly they gave you more and more evidence, reinforcing that it's a real zombie, but all still can be explained away. Then at the climax the heroes are surrounded by a horde of zombies that are absolutely real. It's really cool how your mind can't process it. You know it can't be real, yet you know it is real. That's exactly the feeling I was looking for. The writers solved the problems I mentioned earlier with another twist. The zombies weren't real after all, just some living people taking role playing a bit too seriously.

You have to prevent your audience from feeling like they are waiting for what they know is coming. You can do that however you want, but I would argue it's good story telling to do it quickly. Think of it this way: if making the journey/delay interesting was all that mattered then no one would mind movie spoilers ever. As soon as you hear "Dumbledore dies" you're looking for him to die, and every scene before he dies doesn't matter as much to you because of it. If you want to keep audience attention with a delay, then you have to not only make it interesting but have nothing to do with what you're delaying (don't show Dumbledore) - which usually counteracts your reason for delaying (you want his death to be impactful).

John Truby in his book “Anatomy of Story” discussed a similar thing. He mentions something called “high concept ideas” which are basically stories that are based on unique or original concepts and the pitfalls Hollywood tends to fall into with these films. Basically, bad “high concept” stories tend to milk the idea in one or three scenes with the usual tropes. The book mentions the trope of “a man who pretends to be a woman” and the obligatory scenes of the man dressing up, getting hit on by other men, quirky misunderstandings, etc. The problem is that when those funny scenes are over, the rest of the movie is a bland mess because it has no theme or anything of value to say. For Gemini Man, it’s the same idea. There are scenes of the soldier confronting his young clone with impressive CG and decent fight scenes, but it never follows up on its theme or characters, making it a bland action movie. John explains that the best films take a high concept idea and develop a “designing principle” as he puts it. A theme line or idea that the film explores through it’s character web to ask moral questions that only this high concept can answer. In this case, it’s immortality, humanity, and the ramifications of society rejecting people for this gift with the toll that eternal suffering can have on the protagonists.

This is exactly right but I think the opposite problem can be true. Where the writer has a big idea (or ideas) they desperately want to express but they struggle to find a concept to ground their idea. They have the general act structure in mind and maybe they have the characters (or even a bigger name actor in that starting role), but nothing that happens necessary follows though on that idea. As a result the movie can just come off as very pretentious with no real scenes that visual express the ideas coherently outside of a character out right stating the ideas. A lot of movies that come out the independent film world can come off this way. Fresh out of film school students who learned everything about craft and structure but where too caught up in how their "not so original" profound thoughts to think they needed to rely on a high concept to ground their audience. Of course you could be very ambitious by failing at both concept and ideas. With that you'd be stuck with a movie like Southland Tales. Never go full Southland Tales as some have said. lol

The suggestion I've heard presented with 'high concept' is to ask the initial question of "What if..." - BUUUT you must must must follow up with "How then..." in growing thematic relevance to both explore the original question and mine the ultimate truths offered by the premise. "What if [specific soldiers and fighters could live forever]?" "How then [would they settle arguements], [find purpose in life], [be dealt with by mortals], [keep from going insane], etc..." I think that's the major fail of most 'what if' concepts. They don't really adequately explore the 'how then's' and it becomes more of just a quirky set piece. Or worse, there are glaring holes in the 'what if' question and the audience is left with an extremely open-ended unfulfilled effect. While I loved the movie Mortal Engines for its fun and games, it's really a dissatisfying 'high concept' in my opinion; Artemis Foul as well - just events and things taking place with no real deeper exploration of the unique truths exposed by the reassembly of reality they present. Without spoilers, there's a MASSIVE 'how then' that the writers teased in the final shot, one that - in my opinion - is very much worthy of a sequel.
@storyseek1985
@storyseek1985 3 жыл бұрын
@@CitizenKen1 I haven't seen Southland Tales, but if I understand correctly, I agree with you. A would present the movie Looper as an example. Solid 'high concept', very interesting exploration, but no grounding in 'character' that really had me care. Sure, you don't want to see kids killed, and Emily Blunt is relatable as a single mom to a rather generic extent. But the arc for the main character feels a bit 'wedged in' amongst the high concept elements. So the audience doesn't have a grounding of any kind (or not a very good one - though others may argue with me) I think a movie like Predestination (by comparison) is potentially a bit better in terms of high concept (there's an understatement) but everything bends back to connect with a character we are exploring and in some way empathising with. So high concept must always have its relevance and meaningfulness exposed by a relatable 'human' experience (even if the character isn't human, exactly).

Finally, someone who understands that "stakes" and "death" aren't synonymous. Seriously you have kid's shows where no one can die that still have decent stakes and adult shows (cough Game of Thrones cough regenerating army cough) with no stakes because one has lasting consequences for mistakes and wrong turns and the other doesn't. Death is the ultimate consequence, but not the only one, and if you make death superfluous you don't even have that anymore.

Honestly, I loved this movie. But I really loved how they handled Andy's character. I thought it was great how they showed her at the beginning hating humanity and feeling like it wasn't worth saving because nothing she did make a difference and how towards the end they showed her falling in love with humanity again and finding a reason to want to save them. My favorite scene was the one with the convenience store clerk when she realizes that maybe humanity isn't bad after all and that it's worth saving. Its a little scene but its definitely one of my favorites.

6:40 THIS. THIS! THIS!!! Again and again, I see the potential of concepts (superheroes, magic-users, time travelers, whatever) utterly squandered. If your wizards can teleport themselves at a moment's notice, why should they stand their ground? If one of your characters is indestructible, why isn't she always in front of the others and totally unafraid of the mundane weapons the bad guys have? These are nonspecific examples, but you can apply these principles to whatever lackluster blockbuster you can think of. That's not to say filmmakers don't occasionally get it right: Spider-Man and Doc Ock can both cling to surfaces? Have them fight on the side of a moving train! You know what? That train has windows. Have one of them "fall" through one of them. Spider-Man ends up on a bridge and falls behind? Have him use his webs to slingshot himself back into the fray! THAT is how you take advantage of the abilities of your characters and/or the premise of the piece.

@@pankker474 I felt the scene was more about them trying to catch the guards off guard, you know, cause presumably they've been in that situation many many times, and they didn't simply care about what the guards would think. The vibe i get from the writing is that these people are so old and experienced that the ideals of, in their eyes, children, didn't matter to them. One of them even said as much. So in that sense, it felt natural that they'd try to mess with the guards like that.

I definitely think it is worth watching; started viewing this video, realised i'm about to be spoilered into oblivion, so watched the movie first. It is not going to be someone's all-time favourite movie, but it IS solid. I like the pacing, the original ideas. And the action is good, because it's filled with awesome moments; stuff that immortals can pull of with hundreds, if not thousands of years of experience fighting together; and yet it's not overly flashy. I give the movie a solid 7-8.

When I watched THE OLD GUARD it was definitely an emotional ride. The "boring" first 18 minutes become so much more meaningful if you watch it again after finishing the movie. The whole movie is filled with hope and despair. I cried, laughed and feared for the characters. I especially loved that the movie defied my expectations without me ever feeling betrayed or left out or lost. Without it ever feeling "pointless".

Also, I liked they didn't shy away from all the things most movie makers are scared of doing. A woman as MC AND a black woman as 2nd MC (double female leads) AND 2 of the three main men in the movies are in a homosexual romantic relationship AND showing their feelings and physical parts of their relationship AND no extra romance happening along the main story (like, imagine Andy or Nile or Booker developing romantic emotions for one another along the main story, which would have taken from the plot line) AND instead of following the person that is as confused as we are (Nile) we follow Andy's story who already knows some stuff AND all exposition is followed by IMAGES, not just words. Sadly, the movie wasn't perfect but it well scraped by it. I would have preferred a finished ending to the movie, not a tease for a follow-up but I don't mind that.
