Previously we looked at some of the very modern stores that sell numerous Turkish models in Kabul but in this episode, we look at some of the older small arms that are considered antiques but still legal to purchase (although ammunition is somewhat of a gray area). For that purpose, we went to one of the best shops on Chicken Street in downtown Kabul where there was an excellent array of British martial arms from the early 1800s and ending with the Martini-Henry. Several of these rifles (and smoothbore muskets) were in excellent condition considering their age and location throughout almost a century of being in Afghanistan. Although we can't be entirely certain of their authenticity, they are still an excellent trip down history lane. And the prices! These pieces would be many times their Afghan prices in these conditions if they could be imported into the United States.

Leave it to KZfaq commenters to take time out of their lives to tell a multilingual combat veteran how he is and isn’t allowed to pronounce the name of the country he fought in. It’s quite something. As usual, a very interesting video Miles. Thank you for your service, and for this one of a kind firearms content.

Very cool, my dad brought back one of those 1861 percussion-cap Tower muskets from Afganistan back in 2008 and it was literally sitting in front of me as I watched this. Super cool to see the selection and learn more about the history of these old British guns!

Holy crap Miles. I thought you could only speak multiple middle eastern languages, I didn’t realize you were fully literate. I’m guessing you get awfully tired of people not being impressed by you!?! I humbly suggest you feed on their frustrated tears and keep on keeping on. Oh and brilliant rifles, there is some serious history in the world in places other then North America. 😊

Some are real but counterfeit proof marks Kabul Arsenal had British tooling and guidance. I own a Martini cavalry with Enfield proofs but they messed up an I for a 1 and most likely they know about import restrictions cause they are all pre 98 even though they were making Martinis well into the 1900s

IMO it's actually pretty impressive that these folks can make these guns given the circumstances. they don't have a lot of modern tools, and while these guns can be a bit rough, i sure as hell couldn't build a functional firearm with hand tools.

Cool Vid. Just a point of clarification; The big ring on a cavalry carbine is not to fix it to the horse. it is there to be clipped to the RIDER. ,so that if the rider is knocked out of the saddle ,his gun stays with him.

Antiques are importable, and I don't think muzzleloaders even count as firearms under current laws. My father was able to bring back one of the Tower muskets Miles showed in the video as an Army officer back in 2008, but I think he said even enlisted guys could bring them back without any trouble. Unfortunately, they don't let soldiers bring back modern firearms anymore though.

pre 1898 you can that's why some of them are counterfeit proofed with wrong dates they were making in country Martinis well into the 1900s so they scrubbed and changed. Plus Enfields are more sought after than the unreadable Dari script.

Your "Brown Bess' is not a service example judging by the lock markings. Nice example of it's own type though. Shortened ones were not issued to artillery (they had their own carbine bore types) but was to Fencible, Militia and Volunteer cavalry in the Napoleonic Wars to use up unserviceable stocks of parts and release proper cavalry carbines for front line troops and Britain's allies who got them by the hundreds of thousands. The percussion is not a Brown Bess at all. It is an Honourable East India Company late type musket of the 1840s. It's rear sight is made for 50, 100 and 140 yards with different sight positions. With a replica service paper cartridge mine would hit a man size target always at 50 metres and usually at 100 metres.Mr Pyne arrived from Yorkshire via Calcutta in 1886 and set up the Mashin Khana factory to make Martini Henry rifles beginning production about 1890. No P1853 nor Sniders, whatever Afridi tribal gunsmiths may have been knocking out by hand in the hills.Nice to see the inside and stock of one of the better shops. Thank you for that.

The gun at 3:44 is a copy of a p1853 enfield musket. The british made ones had a better rear sight. So this one would be a foreign made, Maybe in india. The Pattern 1853 (P1853) were all originally smooth bore muskets and later had rifling added. Then all mark 1 and 2 Sniders were made from P1853 rifles and converted. Mark 3 Sniders were made from new as a Snider. In fact the Snider at 6:22 is exactly like mine. A mark 3 1869 Enfield, Granted it is in better condition as mine.
