About OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY:
We moved to our 11 acres in 2011 from a large city in the Midwest with zero carpentry and farming skills. We live with no solar / wind power / public water or well. We share our adventure to a sustainable life, growing our own food from vegetables to meat. We post videos DAILY and they range from HOW TO to EVERYDAY LIFE and NUTRITION on the off grid homestead. We were city folks just like you probably and wanted to enjoy life and have more control over our food. We share food recipes as well as natural remedies.

Tina Turner behaves like a rooster and the Cochins are kinda bullies to the chicks so I would keep my eyes on those for future reference because its not good to keep Nasty chickens in your coop to stress your other birds out...........I used to keep chickens and I'm just extremely intuitive when it comes to animal behaviors. Also..this has worked without fail for me so far. An old Mexican farmer taught me this . When the chicks are about a week old and they are getting a few wing feathers. If you look closely, they will start to get a few tiny tail feather sticking up out of the fuzz. Pullets will have tail feathers at this point. Rooster will NOT have any, but just a round fuzzy butt. Up until about two weeks or two and a half weeks old,( at which time the roosters start growing tail feathers also) you can tell with a great degree of accuracy with this method.

We had a momma duck take care of her ducklings and another hens chicks. I'm not sure if the chicks thought they were ducks or the ducks thought they were chicks. They would make a line and walk up to the neighbor's place to eat the apples that had fallen off the tree. Then she would bring them all back. The neighbors loved watching them. She always had them back before dark. It was interesting to watch them they were not in a single file line but fanned out, side by side. There was nothing wrong with the hen, but I think she was just lazy...lol

I lost the beginning of this year, 2022, my old man Rooster named Josef. He had so many brilliant colours. Believe it or not he was 17 years old. He was 7 when a friend gave him to me and I had him 10 more years. I miss him. Many of my hens are older than 8 & 9+ years. None younger than 5+ years. They are free range with protection limits. I have 3, one year old beautiful big geese to guard them. They are fed organic and all the offal slop. I have a no kill policy. Mine are layers. They are each a pet...about 28 currently. My geese like to snuggle and give hugs 😂. I have 8 guineas ordered due to arrive in May😁. Brook🧑‍🌾🍏🍎

Mine are also layers. I have 15 hens and 21 pullet that will join the flock soon. We I have 9 Guineas and have been successful in getting them to sleep in the coop. It’s not hard to do but you have to be patient. Every time I fed them I talked to them. 8 weeks inside the coop and 2 weeks with an enclosed outside run, chicken wire all around. To get them back inside the coop from that enclosure I talked to them saying “inside Guinea Guinea” Then when I finally let them free roam I made sure to get them off the trees if they went up by treating them with flock party worms, still saying “inside Guinea Guinea” The Guineas also run to me when I go outside to check on the chickens and willingly go into the coop every night.

My favorite hens are ones that survive cold and heat and keep laying. I've enjoyed having three Dominiques and later three Wellsummers. They forage pretty well, and I sure did enjoy the fresh eggs. I just moved their little coop to a new spot every few days and put up a portable fence around them. They had to be locked up tight before dark because of raccoons.

We lost a 1 legged chick named Gimpy and I’m sure it was a raccoon. The second night a beautiful white hen was taken. Never will happen again. The coop is secure and there is a light in the high fenced in enclosure. Now they have the freedom to forage outside their little enclosure and they live that. It’s so much fun to watch them. My son raided them as baby chicks and now they are with a group of 5. The other two were replaced by an older hen and a couple younger hens. They hens when they were little protected Gimpy. I was crushed when he disappeared. I’m not wanting to eat chicken anymore-at least not any I raise. I already won’t eat Bambi, so….these animals are so precious!

Good move. I moved mine too, but a few days before their "due date" because mamma was nesting in an unsafe location. Mom and chicks are doing fine in their separate enclosure in the run. As for my favorite Polish, that's hard since they're all so danged cute! However, I'll pick Tina Turner, simply because I have a Tina too. My Tina is a Black Copper Maran with a red cape. Same idea as yours but in reverse!

Hello Stacy, I just tried it on one of my four Buff Orpington chicks. (they should all be hens). The one I have tried your trick on gave the results of a Hen as you described. Thanks for this video. Really enjoy watching you guys.

Yes I’m having an awesome day. Today my momma hen took her 5 baby chicks out into the chicken yard for the first time. This is our first time have a hen hatch eggs and the way she care and protects them. I brought 5 polish chicks. Only one survived. Her name is Bella. She is beautiful-black with the white plum like yours.

Stacy, I love following you... love what you and your husband are doing and sharing it all with us. I have to tell you last June I picked out six hens, all six dropped their feet and hung as I lifted them gently from my hand. All six are laying hens and giving me lovely eggs now. All six dropped their feet with the lift.

I have never seen that way of determining whether a chick is a hen or rooster. My dad and uncle always talked about doing the copper wire test. I typically wait until they start crowing, and then I say, “oh! That one is a rooster.”

Good little mama with her new family. All chickens are sweet. Had chickens when kids were younger, think of as regular chicken type. Few different colors, not aware of name for varieties. How you checked if girl or boy looks easy. My son also loved those chickens and few years ago got chickens for his home to have eggs. As they got bigger he saw that every single one was a rooster. Gave them to a farmer and decided to not try to have chickens again 😉❤️🐤🐔

You can flip them on their back also. Roosters will stick their legs out straight and lay there. Hens will kick and flip back over. Better than hanging them by their neck!!

First 3 to 5 days or so you can sex by the feathers. You tube has the info. On doing it several ways. There's info on doing it after they are older. Some breeds the combs and wattles and growth size works, I use several methods, by week 8,I am 90 percent sure. You always get one or two. Roos that will fool you. I have hens that won't lay and won't let the rooster mount. But, they will set on any eggs, and mKe great moms? Old folks call them crowing hens. They growl a lot and are big bullies. Never kniw with chooks. But I love em !! Matt

Thank you for the tip. I used to watch an old German lady hold a threaded needle over the chick's head at a local farmers market, and depending on if the needle swung back and forth or in a circle she could tell the sex. round and round a hen or back and forth a rooster.
