Nick is so cute--and young. I am 66 and have 3 older than him. Yikes. Oldest aspidistra is from my mom, and she got the start from her mom. I scrub off the white lichen spots & freshen soil every year, divide when crowded --every decade or so. My weeping fig tree is 45. And a hoya that is 38. It's so gratifying when they live so long.

You reinforce my simple happiness of getting the common plants. I look at the rare ones and their pretty but, something about regular all over the place plants just makes me smile. Maybe I'm not at the level yet to buy a "super rare" $$$ plant. Currently I want a giant Hawaiian pothos, looking at some that are marked down because they aren't perfect. I buy small and sometimes damaged plants and love them just the same. Watching them grow and recover is very satisfying. 😊

My mom has a Hoya carnosa that originally belonged to my great grandmother, who passed in '65. Not sure how long my great grandma had it before that. I have a huge hope philodendron that my mom bought in 1991 and a dwarf umbrella tree that was given to my mom in 1994. Obviously I can't take credit for the majority of their care but it goes to show with the right plants and the right care, they can live for a long time :)

Great video! My oldest plant is a snake plant that my dad got from a colleague of his in the 90s. My dad divided the snake plant as over the years as it grew, and now he has like 10 pots full - and gave one to me last year. So cool to have a plant that is older than me.

The oldest plant I have owned is my “satin” Pothos, but the oldest plant is an angel wing begonia I got from a friend. It was a cutting from one her sister was given before she passed at a young age. It is the plant I would save if I was forced to chose even though I have several “wish list” plants. The sweetness of her to trust me with a cutting always makes me feel very loved

I'm screaming! I had one of those Shelob orchids years ago. She was fabulous! Then, in a move, one of my friends was trying to be helpful by getting my plant shelves ready to load, but she put my *entire collection* of houseplants out in the 110° August sun for several hours while I was unpacking the first truckload at the new house; there were no survivors.

I love this! It's so true that the "boring" ones tend to have a lot of staying power and/or propagate easily! (chlorophytum anyone?) My oldest plant is a ficus elastica that I've had for about 12 years now. It started out quite small but it's such a strong grower that it's now between 6-7ft. I've had to prune it quite aggressively to get it to brach more and I still pinch out most of the tips but it just won't stop!

Great orchid rescue story. Thanks! Made my day. I've had my mama hoya carnosa for 25+ years + finally propagated her last fall. She is now the star in our living room hanging in a wall bracket loving life. My lipstick pant of 20+ years is actually a goldfish plant. Now I don't feel bad the leaves are small cause they are supposed to be. Every other plant is a Covid purchase.

The second my mother got when she was 16 and has since gifted it to me so it’s going on 45+ years but she got it as a cutting from her great aunt so it’s probably closer to 70+

I have several of the same 'oldest' plants. My poor aloe took a spill, though. I hadn't noticed how lopsided it was until it fell off the table in the middle of the night! It has since been repotted and shared. My tiny Jade tree from 8 years ago is now over two feet tall. I think my favorite was started from a gift of a single leaf. My Night Blooming Cereus, AKA Queen of the Night. It occupies the entire four foot shelve of my plant shelves in the kitchen. I babied it along and it suddenly began producing leaves vining everywhere and then one or two flowers late in summer. Now it blooms twice in summer I do love my plants!

i love videos like this! feels nostalgic :) some of the oldest houseplants that i've seen belong to my parents. they consist of a 25+ year old peperomia that my dad adopted from a work colleague before i was born, a 30 year old snake plant (that sadly bit the dust last year from frost damage) and a hoya carnosa as old as time that my parents grew from a cutting from my grandma's plant, that she's had since she was in her 40s!! (ps the peperomia has NEVER been repotted if you can believe it, and it constantly has more rat-tail blooms than you can count!)
