Fun fact: You guys have a FiberFlex skateboard with Krypyonics on your wall in the Braillehouse... it's the red slalom board near the 5 stair. And I know this because I gave it to you a couple years ago. You're welcome.

Old guy here, 69 years old. In the 1950's some of my friends removed the crates|handles from their crate style scooters to end up with the first skateboards that I recall. I bought my first skateboard in 1962, with steel wheels, and a couple of years later one with clay wheels. In 1965, I bought a Hobie Super Surfer wooden skateboard and later a Hobie waffle pattern fiberglass skate board, which was concave, and probably the first skateboard that could be considered to have a kick tail and a kick nose. Both of the Hobies used Super Surfer clay wheels and the same or similar trucks. Vita-Pakt was associated with Hobie, but I only recall seeing the Vita-Pakt label on a pack of Hobie clay wheels. Sunkist was associated with Makaha skateboards. In 1972, someone from Blue Cheer (Hobie) saw me on the fiberglass board and asked if they could use it to remake the molds, but by the time I met up with that person again, they had bought one that they wouldn't have to replace. The remolded boards were released around 1975 with "Super Surfer" polyurethane wheels, but they no longer had the center stripe decal which looked like wood with the Hobie logo on it. I bought one of the 1975 remolded boards, and I still have it. It is still working and has the original trucks and wheels (I managed to not lose any ball bearings). The 1965 board is in storage somewhere, but missing threaded inserts used to mount the trucks, and I no longer have the trucks or wheels for it.

When I was a kid they didn't have store-bought skateboards yet, so my friends & I made our own. Mine was a wooden 2 x 4 plank, about 18" long, with the skate trucks nailed on with bent-over nails. The wheels were metal. We decorated them by using crayon or thinned oil enamel paint to color in the grain patterns of the wood. They didn't turn. If you wanted to turn you stopped, picked up the board, and re-positioned it in the direction you wanted to go. They made a LOT of noise going down the sidewalks.

this vid is so sick, thank you! i skated in the mid-80s when i was ~10 to 12 years and i was psyched to see the fat, flat boards! 😍 the art and aesthetic of that time is super close to my heart. i especially love old skate videos like alien workshop "memory screen" - the love and dedication and art and actual hours of time that went into those films must have been incredible. i'm sure the museum must have screenings. i wish i could visit! thank you for this peek though! 🌈
