Actually lilly, that first shot wasn't just pretty good it was almost perfect. Deer drop a few inches when they hear the bow being released. Remember, when hunting deer, your bullseye is actually lower that what you want to hit because the deer will drop a few inches the instant it hears the bow being shot.
@chrisruzsa2798

Many people say this, I am fully aware of string jumping but i could never agree with not aiming where i want to hit. I made a plan “B” arrow and bolt the plan “A” if the animal moves its still dead if it doesn’t its a perfect hit. The only other option is a complete miss and that is very comforting to know. I hate wounding or losing my prey.
@chrisruzsa2798
@chrisruzsa2798 Жыл бұрын
@Son of Sam oh agreed on that for sure. It’s damn near impossible to not get detected in some manner. Thats a huge perk to archery we get first crack at getting them before they are pressured by rifles and the likes. It helps a lot.

@@chrisruzsa2798 aim for the heart. It’s low in the chest. If the deer ducks, you’ll hit the lungs. If you aim for the center of mass, you have a greater chance of making a back shot, thus injuring the animal potentially in a horrible way. Every bow hunter of deer knows this fact, ESPECIALLY white tail deer hunters.
@chrisruzsa2798
@chrisruzsa2798 Жыл бұрын
@@scotmcpherson thats right and that is where i aim. However many aim well below the deer with pins going under to anticipate a deer ducking or jumping the string and that is not a good aiming point.

If you're serious about hunting game then you will likely be using a compound bow simply because they are way easier to use at higher poundage's and you will be using sights anyway. I doubt that many animals will give you the opportunity to spot them with a rangefinder and then sit there while you shoot them. As you say practice is everything. I've seen top class field archers call an unsighted distance and put an arrow in a small spot every time. Even shooting marked target distances you can get pretty good at distance judgement and a high poundage bow will mean less drop anyway.
@Maddie_Madds
@Maddie_Madds Жыл бұрын
Yeah it's a good point, but Compounds have lots of moving parts, so a lot could go wrong, and when the grid goes down, there will be no more Compound parts, and you won't be able to take it to the shop to fix it. Whereas recurve have 1, 2, or 3 pieces, they can be repaired super easy, you can build your own too. Plus Recurves are quick, with Compound you have to find the range, adjust the scope and the peep sight, fix the release aid etc. And if it does become an shtf self defence situation, you need something quick to Bury Arrows into a target. Don't get me wrong, I do think Compounds are great, so powerful, they look sweet, and especially good for hunting, but I think as a prepper you should get a recurve for backup, incase your Compound breaks 👍🏻
@oldbloke204
@oldbloke204 Жыл бұрын
@@Maddie_Madds Yeah swings and roundabouts for sure but in the context of this video why would you not have a sight but have a rangefinder? I have mates who tried to build recurves, it doesn't work that well and repairing laminate limbs or composites isn't easy either. Building something more basic like a longbow is easier but then you will need to practice with it non stop. A compound will also mean that you have way less stress on your body. Personally I hate guns but if you're hunting game then they are way better than a bow and in most areas how much game will be around after shtf anyway? The most important thing, imo, is that my compound with all the fruit is about as sexy as they come. Shame it's in its bag under the bed and hasn't seen the light of day for far too long. Take care.

@oldbloke204
@oldbloke204 Жыл бұрын
@@sf45acp Why? If you're trying to secure a feed then surely the most efficient way of harvesting said requirement is the best way? In reality growing something to eat is way more efficient than trying to shoot something isn't it? I love traditional but in the real world how many critters will a 32lb recurve knock over? In most areas folks out trying to harvest game will be harvesting each other after a couple of weeks.
@Maddie_Madds
@Maddie_Madds Жыл бұрын
@@oldbloke204 Compounds are heavy, so I'm not sure about strain on the body, my recurve weighs not much at all, it shoots really smooth and silent, and mine is 45lbs, which means the Arrows penetrate pretty deep into a foam animal. It's more about the Arrow flight & FOC that affects penetration. But whatever works best for the individual. I do like Compounds but I'm a Trad girl. But I do think you should have a recurve for backup, incase the compound breaks. You could still attach your sight, D loop & release aid to it to make it smoother, like Lilly has experimented with in other videos. Also plants grown in the garden is great, but meat will be so calorie dense, with lots of protein, & fats that you'll need.

Just a bit of advice from someone who learned shooting with sights and has, slowly, learned instinctive. Take a woods walk with just the range finder, no bow. Pick a spot you're sure of hitting, make an estimation, then range. It will build your ranging skills. Also take a few arrows into the woods and "stump shoot ". Pick stumps, acorns,stones, weeds, whatever, and take a shot. Traditional bows are 50 yards or less for hunting imo unless you're in a blind and very skilled. Love your archery videos.

In an archery class, coeds were shooting 25-30 pound bows. Arrows arced wayyy up, then landed 25-40 yards beyond the row of targets. Sometimes, cars were parked there. Target tipped wooden arrows penetrated tires, safety glass windows, doors, etc. They stuck into car seats tires, etc. An arrow has tremendous penetrating power from even a weak bow. Practice does not necessarily make perfect. But, practice does lead to consistency. If we’re practicing wrong ways, we can get very good at them. Only perfect practice makes perfect. To improve your ranging skills; use known distance like the length of a car or the distance you can throw a baseball easily then estimate how many of those distances are between you and the target. A car is about 6 meters, (7 yards, 20 feet) . Measure your chosen with paces, 5 paces is about 10 yards/ meters. Practice makes perfect. Throw a tennis ball various distances. then hit it with your arrow for good practice

You don't "need" a laser rangefinder, if on a tight budget, they are just faster/easier to use. A simple $10-$20 normal range finder (usually sold as a golf rangefinder), are super cheap and just as effective, you just have learn to use it properly. Great tips and yes, that's a great way to improve and gauge distance without a rangefinder.

I probably don't have to tell anyone here this, but if you're in a survival situation, hunting laws don't apply. So dont worry if its not deer season, build yourself a makeshift tree stand, even if they're illegal where you are. Some areas have laws that they can only be used certain times of the year. All laws disappear when you're fighting for survival! If you can determine what they're eating in your area, make a bait pile. Whatever you need to do to get food!

Deer see things in uv, so it's a good idea to use your laser range finder on the area where you're waiting for the deer to be (creek, bait pile, etc.), before they get there. It's also good to not wash your hunting clothes with laundry detergent. The deer basically see it glowing, because most laundry detergent is uv responsive. Baking soda and/or vinegar is the best, because the baking soda also absorbs human odors and both together will use the bubbles to thoroughly clean and neutralize odors that will probably be the first thing to scare the deer away before they even see you.

Instinctive shooting (no sight pins) doesn't require a set distance, as you know. So, to me, the problem of achieving accuracy is have a consistent anchoring point, a tuned bow, and true arrows. I mention this for this reason,, if you watch a replay of your shot on the pheasant, you see the arrow"flailing" and tracking off to the right,, which is where you hit the pheasant target. You may need to get a stronger pull bow for those longer distances, but fine tuning your "instinct" will get you results with the bow you have. You have good form, and a good release. No, "plucking" the bowstring is not helpful! Practice as much as you can! Keep up the good work, you're doing great!

Hi Lilly. I was just watching the latest video from Bjorn-Bull Hanson. He was showing how he made his first take-down longbow. The thought occurred to me that I would love to see you and he make a video together. Would you consider traveling to Norway if that ever became a possibility?

You should try to get on the Alone show. Season 9 all them did a lot of bow hunting for grouse and squirrels, even a couple beavers.
