We originally did this as a short but by popular request we have now remade it as a full film.
It’s January 11, 1944, and over 140 B17’s from the 401st Bomber Group are locked in desperate combat in the skies above Germany. Bf 109s, 110s, and FW 190s swarm all over the American machines. At the head of the formation Lieutenant Colonel Allison C. Brooks can do nothing but encourage his men forward and hope. 44 P-51 Mustangs of the 354th Fighter Group race to the rescue. Lead by Major James H. Howard he spots the battle taking place through the clouds but also a second group of BF 109s far below, he’s evaluating the situation when suddenly a voice shouts over the radio “go down and get them!”
To his complete horror his entire fighter group immediately dives for the Messerschmitts. He tries to order them back but in the confusion only 3 of his fighters abort the run while the rest head straight into combat. How could just 3 of them hold off the Germans? What happens next is an incredible feat of aviation skill by Howard. Brooks later said of Howard’s defense of the B-17s, "For sheer determination and guts, it was the greatest exhibition I've ever seen. It was a case of one lone American against what seemed to be the entire Luftwaffe. He was all over the wing, across and around it. They can't give that boy a big enough award."

Lt Colonel Allison Brooks was my grandfather. He was a B17 pilot in the 401st, before he was transferred to the mustang. He was piloting the lead bomber this day and would tell me about this day and Howard's flying many times throughout my childhood. He even had a painting with his bomber and Howard's P51 and a flaming 109 from this mission hanging in his study. I just stumbled on this post. My grandpa was my hero growing up. He piloted many planes, the B17, P51, A1 Skyraider and the C130, among others. He always said his favorite to fly was the P51. He retired from the Air Force with 2 stars. This brings tears to my eyes. Thank you so much for telling this story.

"An attack by a single fighter on four or five times his own number wasn't uncommon," wrote a fellow World War II fighter pilot in his postwar memoirs of Howard's performance, "but a deliberate attack by a single fighter against thirty-plus enemy fighters without tactical advantage of height or surprise is rare almost to the point of extinction." Howard was also the only fighter pilot Medal of Honor recipient in the European Theater. He was also a very capable P-40 pilot (6) with the American Volunteer Group, or more famously known as the Flying Tigers in the Burma campaign.

For everyone asking about the Japanese kill marks on his aircraft, Major (later General) Howard originally was US Navy until Pearl Harbor. He left the Navy to join the American Volunteer Group, famously better known as the Flying Tigers over Burma, and got 6 confirmed kills there. When AVG disbanded, he joined the USAAF, commissioned as a Captain then later to Major. It's also said that he is the only USAAF fighter pilot to have been awarded toe MoH in the European Theater. He later would go on to help coordinate the air cover for the D-Day landings. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_H._Howard

Thank you, Yarnhub! A riveting, action-packed and uplifting story. Just what I needed while I'm slowly getting over an annoying cold. →While the D variants get most of the attention, I think the P-51B and C "razorbacks" are the most beautiful fighter aircraft of their time. To be fair, just about all single-engine fighters from either side in the later years of WWII were beautiful to look at, aerodynamic necessity being the primary influence on their shapes. I imagine no plane was ever more absolutely gorgeous, however, than those P-51 escorts seen from the windows of a B-17 flying over Germany.

I just want to tell you that it's crazy how the quality of your videos have improved, and i'm not only talking about the animation details but i personaly love the scenes from inside the cockpits. I'm one of the earlier fans and if you compare some of the older videos with this or any of the newer ones you can see the huge improvement.

The animation gets better and better, and you can easily notice it from video to video. Good job to the animators. I also like the textures and the narrator's voice, as it is always clean and soothing. From Brasil, keep making these films.

I should have known by the way this pilot tangled with the Luftwaffe that he was a SOUTHERN BOY!It showed all over the way he went after his enemies."He saw his duty & did it." Humility as well is a Southern & an American trait.A true hero.

Incredible animation that just keeps on getting better every video!!! Would love to see how you guys would tackle the stories of the Fortress Island aka Malta GC, which during WW2 became the most bombed place on Earth in April of 1942. The heroics of the islands defenders and those who supplied the besieged island are legendary. Keep up the amazing work, Yarnhub!! A small footnote to the Ye Olde Pub vids you've done as well, all going well, by the end of this year there will be a 1/48 scale depiction of Franz Stiglers BF109-G6 escorting the Ye Olde Pub on display permanently at the karting club which is built on the site of the former Kimbolton airfield.

The premiss of the story line in George Lucas's film, Red Tails, was that the fighters needed to stay with the bombers and only engage the enemy while staying with the bombers. This true story illustrates that this was the only effective way to protect the flying fortresses. This pilot was very efficient with his machine gun rounds and did not wasting them. Great story. Yarnhub appears to be upgrading their craft of computer animation with this latest installment.
