I'd like to point out one minor flaw in the translation. Instead of saying "I would have liked", he actually said, "I would have AGAIN, CHOSEN to open a laundry mat and file taxes with you". This hits differently doesn't it, meaning if he is ever given a choice for the second time he will not choose differently! Just shows you how much Waymond loved Everlyn.
@duriahn

So true… the whole premise of the movie is that there are alternate universes based on different choices you make, but in every single one of those universes Waymond chose to love Evelyn because that’s just who he is.

Agreed. Adding on, when the captions say he says “this is how I fight” earlier in the speech, he actually says something closer to “I fight like this, not the same [as you].” The captions use passive voice in English, which I think makes a point that is different than the active voice he uses in Chinese. It’s not a huge difference, but enough to come away with a different emotion depending on which I focus on.

With Father's day coming up, I'm just proud to say that my dad is a Waymond. My mom's an Evelyn and growing up I thought I was weak and pathetic for being more like my father, a Waymond girl. And throughout the years I've slowly become tired and jaded, but at the same time when my guard is not up, I annoyingly find myself being me once again, a Waymond girl. Watchig this movie, Waymond ever so kindly reminded me that me and my father aren't less of a fighter in a cruel world, we just fight differently.

I can’t imagine not falling in love with someone like Waymond. He is the partner you want to have by your side through everything in life. Edit: To the men commenting on this to prove me wrong, look. I am very sorry that some women have treated you badly. I genuinely hope you find happiness elsewhere with a partner that gives you all that you deserve. But I am speaking for myself and my preferences, not for women everywhere. You saying that I don't mean what I say or otherwise is not changing my mind with my original comment. I do not view a man crying or being gentle as a weakness. Maybe you do. I don't. A man crying and being vulnerable is not a sign of weakness or a "clown act" as one of you put it.

My ex broke up with me last month after 3 years of relationship with 2 previous years of friendship and this movie was particularly special for both of us. it's such a beautiful memory that i keep in my heart though it burns and hurts like nothing ever did. When we met and decided to be together he identified as a she. but now he is going trough a hormonal change process and that split us apart. I still love and feel special things for the person that he is even knowing we can't be together and again. it's the worst pain i've ever felt. This week i saw him with another guy because we still go to the same school together and all the progress i thought i made fell apart and now it feels like i'm back where i started. I even got to the point where i doubdted my sexuality just to think we may be together again someday. we just both loved each other so much... and now i'm completely heart broken and confused without knowing if he is going trough the same when i was i was willing to play all my cards for him.

Be kind to yourself and find out who you really are. Get to know yourself, both inside and out. Fall in love with the pieces you want to keep and fix those you wish to make better. Love will find you again, soon. So, take care of yourself.

the same line does not need to be said by poor waymond because he does not regret the choice he made. he is happy even though they struggle. that is how he fights - with positivity. it's easy to think back on your past decisions and regret them. it's much harder to live with them and be grateful for where you are at your current point in time. it's specifically saying the Waymond in her world wouldn't give up anything he has obtained, because he is genuinely happy. you have to grasp your happiness tightly, because those moments are what make life worth living when ultimately nothing really matters. this is one of the core themes of the story, and what separates existentialism from nihilism. what meaning there is in this uncaring world must be gleaned by you and you alone. if you cannot find one, then you succumb to apathy. Waymond found his reason - his love for Evelyn and Joy. A simple reason, but one strong enough for him to be an emotional tether for his family.

Thinking about it, you’re exactly right. And what’s more, Waymond, to Evelyn’s possible surprise, is not struggling and poor without her but rich and successful. Evelyn thought her “laundromat version” Waymond was clueless and incompetent, but if they had never decided to be together, Waymond would have become rich, making his ultimate wish to be with her at the laundromat even more touching.

I don’t know if it’s just me but does anyone else have difficulty letting go of past relationships? My biggest problem in life is my inability to just let go of the past whether it’s trauma, people, lost loved one, etc. I know to succeed I need to be present and not focus on the past or future but I have no care for the future as if I don’t even want one because I’m so stuck in the past. I feel like my past takes me away from my present which ultimately makes me not even want a future regardless of its results. What do I do? Everything always ends up with me thinking about and pondering about my past and what ifs even though I know it’s only detrimental to me. How do I let go?

It wouldn't have hit as hard if it was a female saying these things, because we're used to having the woman in the relationship being the one that teaches the man to "look on the bright side and be kind". Having it be a man who is kind and goofy and idealistic, compared to a woman who is cynical and pragmatic and mistrustful, is good to see, because we almost never see this on screen. But actually there are a lot of men like Waymond. And they deserve to be appreciated.
