Cat chats with Alan Lancaster.
For 25 years, Alan Lancaster was bassist with one of the most successful rock bands of all time. A band he founded with school friend Francis Rossi and one which enjoyed multi-platinum album sales and stadium gigs.
But an acrimonious split after Status Quo opened the stage at Live Aid in 1985 left Alan alone in the wilderness, trying to navigate his way through the music business jungle.
Alan tells me about how he survived rejection, playing with the Bombers and the Party Boys, and what it was like to be part of the biggest musical event the world has ever witnessed.

i really enjoyed that, it was good to just let Alan talk without being cut off & interupted by the interviewer. Quo lost it's soul, or should I say rock when Alan went, he had a sound that added so much to 'the real' Quo. I was introduced to Quo in 1978 age 12 by my 65 year old neighbour (a story in itself) who played me Softer Ride & 45 Hundred Times together with some Deep Purple & Sabbath, my life changed that day & the real Quo has been the soundtrack of my life. Nice one Alan & Good interview :-)

ALAN CHARLES LANCASTER otherwise known as NUFF, has passed away in Sydney, his home for 45 years. The founding member and the backbone of STATUS QUO had been suffering from Multiple Sclerosis for many years. Alan battled on bravely, performing at QUO's Reunion gigs in 2013 and 2014. Even though he had MS, Alan's performance and his vocals were the strongest of the three. My favourite member of QUO is Alan Lancaster. I had the pleasure of having a beer and a smoke with Alan at a Sydney pub gig, in Five Dock, when he had The Lancaster Bombers and The Lancaster/Brewster Bands in the late 80's. We had a longer chat at The Lewisham Hotel as well. These were dirty, grungy hotels, though this didn't phase the great man of the people. Alan was the most beautifil man, very humble, down to earth and a great guy to talk with and have a laugh. Vale Alan ( Nuff ) Lancaster RIP mate, you were one of the greatest Rockers of all time.

That's bull about him being left alone in the wilderness . Alan had made it clear that his move to Australia was permanent, so how could a band that gigs 230days per year fit that in. That said , I am glad I saw him in the 1984 tour and again in 2014. A legend who will be missed. RIP Alan, hopefully Rick is there to welcome you. 🙏🎸🎸

Alan Lancaster 7/02/1949 - 26/09/2021 Bassist/Singer/Songwriter/ Producer/Genius of STATUS QUO fame, has died aged 72 of Multiple Sclerosis at his Sydney home, surrounded by his family. Born in London, he moved to Australia in 1976 after marrying his beautiful wife Dayle. Alan wrote and co-wrote many classic Rock songs The 9 1/2 minute Psych/Rock song "Is It Really Me, Gotta Go Home" was written by the Genius of Alan Charles Lancaster. Ma Kelly's Greasy Spoon album 1970 on the Astor / Pye Label. Produced by the late / great John Schroeder. Anyone who met Nuff would know first hand what a beautiful, sweet and charming gentleman he was. I had the pleasure of socialising with Alan at a few gigs in the late 80's, at some of his gigs with The Lancaster Bombers and The Lancaster / Brewster Band and The Party Boys, the latter having 2 Chart Topping Hits. " Hold Your Head Up " by Argent and " He's Gonna Step On You Again " by John Kongos. Alan produced a multi-platinum selling album for Pianist Roger Woodward.

Coghlan quit after kicking over his Drum Kit in the studio one day. Alan told the other guys that " he'll be back " Coghlan got on a plane and flew home, never to return. Rossi and Parfitt were imbibing way too muck cocaine and inadvertently were blocking John and Alan out of their inner sanctum. Rick and Francis had their own private codes and language that no one else understood. Even Rick had a meltdown at an airport one day, when he exploded at Francis, saying that he was sick of being No.2 in the band or 2nd fiddle, words to that effect. Francis has a dictatorial facet to his personality and if you didn't " fall into line " then you did what John and Alan did and left the greatest Rock band of all time. Very, very sad.

The UK end of the 90s was the decline of the music industry here, the LIVE AID captured the great artists from 70s and 80s. BBC banning Quo, which was terrible, record companies no longer existed, and things like Britain's got talent, which they didn't, was the norm...things change....shame, thanks for the music Nuff....

Obviously Alan's easy to wind up, he's a proud guy, from a generation where you had to fight I guess. The frantic four (two reunion tours) were great, but, with respect, Spud and Alan weren't match fit, but both of them had to play the way Rick and Francis had played since '86. The first tour they cut 4500 times into Rain, that's the way "Quo lite" played it for years wasn't a frantic four thing. A number of adjusting in both camps. The 2014 shows were much better and live a good way to go out, but behind the scenes Alan health wasn't getting any better. Francis is francis at the end of the day.

Disagree, the weak link on the 2013 tour was Rossi, that is how the 2014 tour happened, so that he could make amends. I have a recording of the 2013 gig in Glasgow and Rossi's lead is very erratic, sometimes on it, sometimes not. Nuff and Spud were steady in 2013 and killed it in 2014. Rick was Rick
