I found this on the web. Rigid sewing thread will gradually cut through the yarn. It *does* leave you a nice framework on which to do duplicate-stitch darning, but you'll be doing it sooner than you would without the thread in the first place. A better idea is to use wooly nylon serger thread. It's got more stretch to it than the yarn does, so it moves with the yarn and won't cut it, and since it's more durable than most wool yarns, it will also leave a framework for darning when you eventually need to do that.

Lang Jawool makes and sells reinforcement bobbins and it has a high wool continent too in addition to nylon- so it will stretch with the wool in your sock. You can get in US too.

I think nylon sewing thread will act like a saw on you soft yarn. They make reinforcing toe heel yarns that are very strong thin but thicker and kinder to wool and knit fabric. Some brands of sock yarn even come with matching reinforcing thread

Tayler. Heel flap and gusset I always knit TAAT*T* (Two at a time tandem) Individually on two sets of dpns. It’s fun. Cuff on sock 1. Put it down. Go do cuff on sock 2. Etc… Etc…. I even have bought project bags from Etsy with a divider in the middle and separate yarn guides. You have one sock and yarn on dpns on one side. The other on the other side. DPNs is my fave but you can use circs. Just knit 2 individual socks tandem.

I will have to look up the other heels you mentioned. My current favorite (toe-up) heel is called the Keel Heel. Instead of decreasing on the sides to form a gusset, the decreases are on the back of the heel (making a triangle). It makes striped socks look much better.

Years ago my mom gave my husband a peanut basket because he loves eating in the shell peanuts. It was woven fairly loosely so the peanut bits would fall through onto his lap and he really disliked it. I think I gave it away a long time ago, way before learning to knit. Rats. Love watching your videos and happened to be knitting socks for dear husband while doing so. He loves peanuts 🥜 so I’m thinking he’d love a peanut basket for Christmas 🎄 along with more new hand knitted socks 🧦 of course. I have to keep my knitting projects in zippered bags to keep the little beasties brats 😼 from messing with them. I love the little ones you talked about too. I use the pencil style pouches by that maker for all the necessities accessories for sock knitting and put it inside my project bag. I have usually two sock projects bags going at the same time, one with colors that delight me and another with the more staid colors for those who prefer those colors.

"We don't need an anatomy lesson." It's comments like that that make me enjoy your podcasts that much more. My method to prevent the holes-in-socks problem: wear different socks 😄 I have a number of pairs of house socks that are not getting worn down or felting or matting at all simply because I cycle through them and none get worn that often. It's a fantastic reason to make yourself more socks! And they will last far longer withOUT the need to mend or darn. Yes: I do socks concurrently 👍🏾

My main reason for not doing the heel flap and gusset is the time it takes. That said I did find that picking up stitches always messed me up till I started using small dp needles to pick up the side stitches. Once that is done you can add the stitches to the rotation as you get to them with less fussiness. I've been using the afterthought recently since I've been doing my socks in a tube then separating for the heel and toe. For me this has become my go to for socks. Love your channel and girl, you take whatever time you need to come back fresh and ready to roll. You have to take care of you! But I'm here for it when you are ready.

Ooh, as someone who is attempting to knit a colorwork Christmas stocking, that peanut basket would hold the 2 working colors perfectly! What a lovely suggestion, and thanks for sharing it with us. Yes, socks will wear out. It's the nature of the beast. I have heard of people cutting off the cuff and re-knitting the foot, but that's kind of a lot of work for socks, IMHO. Until we are ready to Ramble, have a great week!

I’d never heard of a peanut basket. It is gloriously cute! And what a sweet idea for 2@at socks! I’ve been using a cheap 7x11 plastic basket. It holds two 100g balls nicely. They came 3 to a set, which is convenient, as I have to nest the one in use under the others when not knitting. One of our cats likes yarn far too much. 😻

Okay Tayler. You got me looking at peanut baskets now. I didn’t know those existed before today and now I want them. Too cute! Lol I took a class once with someone who said they tried reinforcing their socks and ended up with a knitted nylon mesh where the fabric once was. Meaning, the heel still wore out, but the nylon thread remained. I’m curious how your experiment goes. I have a pair of socks with mohair held along on the heel and they are in great shape! Another teacher/channel I follow told me about Kevlar thread. That’s a another rabbit hole. It’s hard to find but that is some very strong thread! She was going to try it in her socks. Anyway, great episode as always! I don’t comment every time but I always watch and like. ❤

Just a word of caution when using vintage threads: first do a stretch strength test on the thread before using it to knit with as it actually can degrade over time and break apart in your work after washing and wearing (lesson learned after using vintage threads in a sewing project, which was a bummer😢).

Good to see you again! Your TAT socks are cute. I have a little project bag for my socks however that peanut basket is adorable. One question - does it snag the wool at all? My husband just looks at his socks + there are holes in them. I have a knitting book - Saltwater Classics - which mentions darning the inside balls and heels of your new socks with the same yarn you used to reinforce those areas. Have yet to try. BTW i read, and loved, CJ Sansom's Dissolution. Thanks for the recommendation.

Have you thought about the shadow heel? I really liked it for my last socks, the only thing I don’t know is how it would work with doing taat. I’ve never done them. I have added reinforcing thread to the heels and toes of a couple of socks, it adds some bulk but does reinforce them. I do wear my socks everywhere and yes I get holes.💕. Iris

I really think you would like a Fleegle heel. I've knit a few socks with them and I think they're much better than regular short row heels, but just as easy. A fun pattern for this would be one like the Van Dyke Socks by Wendy D. Johnson. Those are knit in worsted (yes worsted) and they're one of my favorite pairs of socks now. The Time Traveler socks also have this type of heel as do the Tuku Honey socks by Andrea Mowry and Fight Like a Girl by Lisa K. Ross.

My first socks are over a decade old and zero holes. They're Regia and so tough. That being said if I hadn't knit 40 more pairs and worn them weekly I'm sure there would be holes.
@WOOLNEEDLESHANDS
@WOOLNEEDLESHANDS 11 ай бұрын
Yeah totally. I think that the more socks you have, the less you wear any one pair, the less you experience fabric breakdown. Also, I don't completely discount the importance of yarn quality and type in the structural integrity of socks. The argument (that I mention I hear often) has more to do with using yarn from certain breeds of sheep to prevent wearing holes in your socks in lieu of using reinforcement such as synthetic fibers or choosing yarn that has Nylon "built-in". I know Regia is way better for socks than the majority of the yarn being marketed as sock yarn right now (ahem...looking at you Merino) and that's because it oftentimes has a Nylon content of at least 25% in addition to virgin wool or in some cases, washable wool (which will definitely play a part in Regia socks standing the test of time and wear). I think what is determined "sock yarn" needs to be looked at more closely so folks know what to expect when they knit socks with 100% Superwash Merino sock yarn--or even 75/25 Merino/Nylon yarn as opposed to a Regia or Kroy. It would be cool to do a comparison test with Regia and a hand-dyed Merino-based "sock yarn". Now you have me wanting to go buy all the Regia. 😉

I have read that one benefit of the afterthought heel is that you can actually take it out and replace it with a new heel when they wear out? I have not tried it but always wondered how that would work with stitches that are already rubbed and scruffy on the bottom of your foot? Havent worn a pair out yet to try that theory but I do love the afterthought heel for sure….

When nylon is blended with wool in the yarn, it adds to the strength and durability. Knitting a nylon thread together with the wool might not work as well. The nylon might start to cut through the wool with wear and make it less durable. It will be interesting to hear your experience with this technique.

I remember you saying a while back that you're growing your hair out. I wanted to say, this style looks cute on you.....not that you need any approval from a random person on the internet, but knowing sometimes it's just nice hear/read nice things I thought I'd say it anyway. 🙂

It's very nice to hear and means a lot to me. Especially coming from a "stranger" on the internet. And you're not a stranger anymore. Thank you for the comment. ❤️

I can’t wear hand knit socks because my feet are really sensitive, and any nylon content feels like knives on my feet.

I saw a knitter talking about running yarn through the stitches that wear out the quickest after the sock is finished. I know it probably doesn't look as nice but no one is looking at the bottom of your feet!

Yeeesssssss to Irish breakfast!! How is it even better than English Breakfast?? 🤔 I love a good London Fog too - I use Earl Grey, honey, and steamed milk. If I’ve trimmed our lavender lately I’ll also throw so lavender sprigs in sugar water to boil a lavender simple syrup in lieu of honey and it’s **chefs kiss**. I’ll make you one if you ever get to DC ;)
