Wow! This video was exceptional. Thank you for your very caring work creating it. Ever since reading the book and watching the movie, the sound of bagpipes always brings a poignant thought of Officer Ian Campbell. Carl Hettinger suffered emotionally the rest of his life, not only from the horrific murder experience but having been blamed for surrendering his gun and having to repeatedly testify in court over years. Poor guy. You rise far above other true crime video producers, managing to convey facts and empathy without typical sentimentality. You have my highest respect.

I'm from a small town nearer to it than Bakersfield, and my family had a highly publicized murder too. The two stories became cautionary tales for teens to not go out and take kegs of beer, smoke weed in these areas in the 80's. It only encouraged us. I've been married for over 30 years. Unless you're familiar with onion fields while they're harvested, you don't realize how pungent that smell is. We'd drive through to visit my family a few times a year. First garlic. Then THOSE ONION FIELDS. Good times. Edit: I lived off of Franklin and Los Feliz for about a year and a half, which isn't far from the La Bianca house.

I’ve been fascinated and followed this case since the movie first came out and have read the book many times over. I am of the belief that Powell fired the extra four shots into Campbell. I base this on the fact that Campbell was reportedly shot with his own weapon, which Powell took from him. Smith disarmed Hettinger. Also, while not a choirboy by any means Smith, was mostly a non violent petty thief. Powell was a psycho.

This story was very sad for Ofc. Ian Campbell and his family. It also was very sad for Ofc. Karl Hettinger and family. I don’t give a CRAP what anyone says about what they would have done in that situation. Until YOU have been in that situation you can not say honestly what you would do in this situation. I was on the job for 45 years. We had at least two episodes where the officers were forced to give up their weapons. Bad guy had both officers on the ground, (he had walked around a corner ahead of them at a local flea bag hotel and was going to his room for his I.D. for a minor infraction. When the two officers rounded the Conor, he was standing there with a hand gun stuck in their faces. He disarmed them, but was distracted by someone coming out of another room down the hall. As he turned to look briefly, one of the officers drew a .22 magnum wallet pistol and fired the one round the pistol held and dropped the bastard dead right there. Turns out he was an ESCAPED COP KILLER. There is not any chance those officers would have lived through that. The officer who shot him hit him in the throat. God was protecting them that evening. Officer was suspended for 10 days for using an unauthorized weapon to kill the man that was going to shoot them. The command staff treated him like a criminal…. just like Karl Hettinger was. Joseph Wambaugh wrote an excellent account of the crimes before, during, and afterwards. He’s written several non fiction books that are great and I wish I could get them. Thank you for letting me RANT. God Bless you one and all. Stay safe.❤

It is real easy to criticize the actions that an officer/officers take made in split seconds. With that said, keep in mind Campbell was the lead officer in the car and told Hettinger to give up his weapon. And, yes they made a mistake, but what most don't know was that, prior to this incident, there had been a rash of incidents where LAPD officers were disarmed and held then, let go un-harm. Both Campbell and Hettinger were aware of these incidents and believed their situation was no different. As for, whether or not Powell would have given up, I doubt that, Smith might have, but Powell was a cold blooded killer. What might have happen, was Campbell would have been shot anyway, but Hettinger could have shot Powell, and Smith might have been taken into custody. Once, Powell got behind Campbell, it was a good bet Campbell was dead, either way. Campbell was just as much to blame, as Hettinger. He should have ordered Powell out at gun point, once Smith jumped from the car, throwing his hands up, as he did.
