They're news anchors - they're there to look inoffensive, plaster on a fake smile and read off of cue cards, not for their acting/improv abilities. Which is, incidentally, the very thing that the "Today Now" Onion segments are mocking.

Today Now was one of, if not the most hysterical segments of the Onion. They really did a excellent job of touching on the vapid, superficial,insensitive and Insincere aspects of news people. Talking heads who are concerned only with ratings and avoiding criticism of their need to exist. This is comedy gold.
