_____
As Major Kim Campbell flew over Baghdad in March of 2003, she pointed her aircraft's gun at an enemy attacking an American position full of troops.
Flying low over the target area, she suddenly heard and felt a loud bang on the back of her aircraft. She'd been hit.
Luckily, Major Campbell was flying one of America's sturdiest airplanes: the Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II.
The A-10 is capable of working without hydraulics and has a 1,200-pound titanium aircraft armor that protects it from even the most powerful surface-to-air missile. And despite being a slow vehicle with a top speed of 420 miles per hour, it is most definitely not a delicate aircraft.
Built with maneuverability and simpleness in mind, the so-called ‘Warthog’ has survived repeated attempts by the US Congress to retire it, remaining on the United States Air Force's good side for over 50 years and becoming an iconic aircraft of the modern era.

Join Dark Skies as we explore the world of aviation with cinematic short documentaries featuring the biggest and fastest airplanes ever built, top-secret military projects, and classified missions with hidden untold true stories. Including US, German, and Soviet warplanes, along with aircraft developments that took place during World War I, World War 2, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, the Gulf War, and special operations mission in between.
As images and footage of actual events are not always available, Dark Skies sometimes utilizes similar historical images and footage for dramatic effect and soundtracks for emotional impact. We do our best to keep it as visually accurate as possible.

My kinda cool A-10 story. My dad lived in Alaska and invited me up for a canoe trip down a remote river. This was like 1989 or so. I was 14. We were paddling down river enjoying the quiet peaceful scenery. The next thing we knew 2 A-10's buzzed us at about 100'. They were doing mock gun runs on us and we never even heard them until they passed. We got a wing waggle and they moved on. This was the coolest thing ever to happen to 14 year old me.

When I was at Fort Bragg from 92 to 95, a bunch of a-10 crewmen who were there on TDY came in to a local bar one time to have a few drinks, and the place was packed, but just as soon as we figured out who they were, we made room for them right up at the bar, and not a single one of them were allowed to buy a drink all night long. To say that there's a special relationship between Army guys and A10 guys is somewhat of an understatement.

My A-10 story. I was at a FOB on the Pakistan border in 2003. That night our LP/OP up on a ridge line above the compound was attacked by Taliban forces. We called Bagram For CAS and they sent up a couple of A-10s. I was down at the compound handing water bottles to the forward air controllers on the rooftop and could hear all the radio chatter. The lead attack pilot was female which for an old guy like me was something new. She definitely knew her stuff. It’s hard to describe the screeching sound that gun makes when the Warthog makes an attack run but I’ll never forget it. She tried to dust off the attackers with a rocket but that didn’t work. The LP/OP platoon leader finally requested a strafing run, which they don’t like to do when combat is that close. The pilot did it. I was about 300 or so meters away but definitely saw the impacts. Well, as you can guess combat ended immediately. There wasn’t enough left to count bodies but I don’t think any Taliban escaped to fight another day. The next day I flew back down to Bagram where I was stationed. A buddy of mine bumped into the pilot in the chow hall and she gave him a few spent 30mm shell casings from the attack. He gave one to me. It’s one of my most prized possessions.

The first P-47s were called Razorbacks, before they had bubble top canopies installed. To have the A-10 called the Warthog is an honor. I loved how they were assigned to the 188th in Ft. One story I heard for the Warthog monicker was due to the P-47 being called the Razorbak, thus the Warthog was a natural nickname for the A-10, the successor of the Thunderbolt name. Other stories are a lot more unforgiving, stemming ffrom the time when majority of the USAF pilots looked down on the A-10.
@BlacktailDefense
@BlacktailDefense Жыл бұрын
@@urbypilot2136 The nickname for the A-10 came from Republic's three prior jets, the F-84 Thunderjet, F-84F Thunderstreak, and F-105 Thunderchief. The F-84 required a stupidly long runway and cool weather for a reliable take-off, and when the conditions weren't perfect, they'd usually overrun the runway; so many of them ended up nose-down in the dirt that the nickname "Groundhog" prevailed (it's pilots also called it the "Ground-Loving W####", but that name couldn't be spun into good PR). The F-84F and F-105 also had similar limitations, but because they were faster, they ended up being nicknamed the "Super Hog" and "Ultra Hog", respectively. As the A-10 was ugly, and usually operated low down in the mud, the nickname "Warthog" was almost inevitable.

My impression was the Air Force wanted to kill-off the A-10 and some members of congress opposed that idea. I'll never forget a quote from the Discovery Wings documentary on the A-10: "while the Air Force pilots stated the air speed indicator on the A-10 should be replaced with a calendar, the fact remains, the A-10 can absorb battle damage that would bring down a whole squadron of F-16" .......... They dropped their flaps and gear to slow the aircraft down and the 3 of them got into a mock dogfight LOL. The guy in the Phantom was able to keep his nose on them the whole-time way better than the A-10's could muster which is not surprising and would have taken them both down if he had a gun 🤣 Afterwards they gave him a solute and went on their marry way. She's a gorgeous ol' gal that most can appreciate in a picture, but unless you've been on the ground to SEE her, you just don't know... When the engines spool up to full power and the flames pop out, you're suddenly excited all about an airplane again, and DAMN is that sexy as HELL!!! The Warthog... well, aesthetically (???) not much. I mean, even quite a chunk of the pilots admit it's called "Warthog" because it ain't what everyone would call "pretty"... BUT BE there... BE on the ground with it just once. Suddenly, in spite of any aesthetic questionability, if you're up to your tits in trouble, it's the WARTHOG you're damn thankful to have on your side! Fun fact about the A-10: it has the dubious distinction of being responsible for more friendly fire incidents than any other aircraft in the US arsenal. The GAU-8 Avenger 30mm gatling cannon is actually pretty inaccurate, the recoil of firing makes it even worse, and it's actually pretty ineffective against modern armor. The F-111 Aardvark was actually a more effective tank buster than the A-10 with far more armor kills to it's name during Desert Storm. There's a reason the Air Force has upgraded the A-10 over the years to use more and more guided missiles and smart bombs instead of just having it rely on it's autocannon.

Not the fastest, enhanced crew protection, effective delivery of role-specific ordnance. btw, IMO any of those propeller planes could cover up the sound of an A10, esp coming and only a whistle going. Saw such at a mid '80s airshow fly-by where a Texan did so as they passed side by side. (yeah weird) A10's turn, roll rate, and vertical climb just wowed me that day.

Always liked the A-10. Its reputation is well earned as one of the best. The only problem with it is the same problem with any aircraft: It is old. Very old, by aviation standards. I worked on F-18 Hornets, and they were "half-modern" so to speak: Modern materials integrated into a metal airframe. The A-10 has a lot of metal, which is prone to metal fatigue. One particular maintenance process on it was literally 3x longer than that which the Hornet took. It's a dated design. The simple solution is to do what they did with the Hornet: Redesign based on existing plans, lose the bad, integrate the modern, keep the gun (because it is what made the 'hog!), and perhaps make it a tad bigger, meaning more payload (aside from what modern materials and techniques would give already), then rename it the Thunderbolt III, AKA the Feral Hog!

Ahhh....our issue wasn't metal fatigue and I doubt that maintenance time number. Our issue is A-10s are old and HEAVILY modified. Which means old wiring and lot's of weirdness that isn't on the drawings that we have to work through. I bet a A-10 load crew can reload an A-10 faster than you can load a hornet. Unless you include the gun. Ours is...industrial strength. The Hornet's is more of a, um...BB gun.
@hornetscales8274
@hornetscales8274 Жыл бұрын
@@Wpns175 Can't say for sure, but the Warthog was made for tank busting so the gun was built for the task. Other aircraft just had a 20mm for other roles and merely load in explosive rounds to make up for the lack of size compared to the how's 30. The maintenance I referred to was a common flight hour inspection/replace of certain components. There's just a lot more to do on an all-metal bird. I still think making a new hog like the Super hornets did (slightly bigger maybe?) would be a good way to retire the Warthog.

Some 700 A-10s were built, and only about 15% were lost in accidents, with another 40% going straight to the boneyards, never to return. Almost all of them are still there, even though most weren't even 10 years old when they were retired. The USAF won't reactivate them. In other words, there's no shortage of unused A-10s for export --- the USAF generals just won't let anyone have them. After all, the inevitable media exposure of foreign experience with operating the A-10s would undermine the status quo's narrative that they're nothing but a drain of resources.

@@philgiglio7922 The A-10 would serve the Army well, but there's three reasons this will never happen. 1: The USAF and Army set in stone during the 1948 Key West Agreement that the Army would not operate any armed fixed-wing aircraft weighing over 10,000lbs; the A-10 is considerable heavier than this. That agreement is strictly enforced; then the Army armed OV-1 Mohawks in the Vietnam War (albeit only with smoke rockets for marking purposes), the USAF complained to Congress, who forced the Army to stop arming OV-1s. 2: The only reason the USAF ever gave the go-ahead to turn the A-X program into a real aircraft (the A-9 and A-10 were the result) was to short the Army out of their AH-56 Cheyenne attack helicopter program, as it was expected to cost many billions of dollars (that would have been removed from the USAF's budget to pay for it), and the only way to prevent the AH-56 from entering production was to demonstrate a USAF commitment to a dedicated CAS platform (the AH-56 had been developed precisely because the USAF deliberately refused to provide adequate CAS support to the Army). After the AH-56 was cancelled, the immediate succession of it by the AHX program (which produced the AH-63 and AH-64) meant that the USAF still stood to lose a ton of funding if the full 1,200 helicopters the Army wanted were built, so to make sure that didn't happen, they _committed to building_ the AX, and bought the A-10. They succeeded in this goal, as AH-64 production ended (it was re-started decades later) with only 700 completed. The Army bureaucracy still holds a grudge against the USAF and the A-10 over this, and they always will. As Admiral Hyman Rickover famously stated, _"If you have to sin against god or bureaucracy, sin against god; god might forgive you, but bureaucracy never will"_. 3: The A-10 represents unwanted ideological and fiscal competition for Army Aviation's helicopter fleet. They'll cancel it quicker and harder than the USAF ever would, if they ever got control of the program. The Marines would do the same, as the A-10 is only an unwanted impediment to their AH-1, AV-8, and F-35B programs.

In both the game and real life, the warthog is not certified for operations where they do not have air superiority. While it is capable of shooting down an opposing aircraft, it carries neither the weapons nor control systems to do so effectively. What it does well is crush ground targets into Oblivion.

Yeah, that's part of the problem when playing in Arcade mode. Any sense of reality gets replaced by the "rule of cool" and "game balance". So you end up with aircraft that should laugh off anything smaller than a cannon round, falling apart like tissue paper when some hapless biplane gets lucky.

@Mark Fergerson I was enlisted and worked in a squadron. I know the ins and outs of CAS and aircraft. The A10 is overrated and outdated. Its not the survival machine people think, it was outperformed by helicopters and the F111 in the gulf. A10 pilots had to use binoculars to see targets and it has an incredibly high amount of blue on blue incidents.

Don't let that day come to pass. Write to the powers that be and tell them how you feel. Give them hell. If they have something demonstrably better let them prove it. We don't, the A 10 is the greatest gift our ground troops have ever gotten from the Air Force. The JSF-35 is a joke by comparison. The Air Force is always seeking a "one plane that can do everything" and that's a fantasy. A fantasy that's wasting billions of dollars of your tax money. And endangering the lives of the men and women who proudly serve our great nation. Let us protect them, and America's interests. Let's keep the A 10. Godspeed.

It is a lovely plane, but sadly it's performance would be not so useful against a country with proper air defense. It's main cannon is now useless against modern tank armor which makes the Gau useless against anything with decent armor. And survivability is good against an enemy that has no air defence or no protected airspace. It can easily be shot down by multiple missiles especially because it's slow. It's time we stopped exaggerating it's effectiveness. And have you even heard about its crazy friendly fire cases?

We used to watch A-10's and F-4 Phantoms doing bombing runs. In 87 I joined the AZ Army National Guard and eventually ended up in Gulf 1. This aircraft is one of the most beautiful sights when you're under fire in a hostile environment.

These plans are amazing. While I was on Active Duty and during my college years while attending Army ROTC Boot Camp, I was privileged to view what the Military Calls "A Million Dollar Minute" where they expend 1 Million USD in Munitions and destroy 1 grid square. Ok they don't actually destroy a grid square but the do shoot the shit out of it. They have cannon firing point blank range and that's a double BOOM you don't EVER forget; I mean Boom as the cannon fires than BOOM again as it hits the ground not too far from the end of the Barrel. Also they had an A-10 Warthog flying so low to the ground that you could practically read the name tag of the piolet as he banked in front of us by what seemed like inches over our heads. The burrrrp of the 30mm is unmistakable and unlike any other weapon you've ever heard. It was amazing to hear the burrrp and then see the massive amounts of hits on the ground as dust was kicked up drastically. Sadly I did not finish Army ROTC, as school was not my cup of tea, but I did go on Active Duty and I'm very glad to call my self a US Army Vet... Oh, the sad thing about the million dollar minute was the guy tossing grenades. I mean it sounded like someone was setting off poppers and it was so low compared to all other Bangs and Booms I'm not sure why they had him there. He took more cover from the other booms than any of us because he was really danger close... Cheer's...

@@Shoeg4zer-- in an ideal world, maybe. Fact is, aircraft take hits, especially CAS aircraft. No Bronco or Super Tucano could survive the kind of damage that the Warthog can take. @@lordphullautosear The Warthog isn't fit for CAS in a modern combat environment against a peer competitor so there's no point in even having that conversation. We can see what happens to birds like the Hog based on the experiences of SU-25 Frogfoot pilots in Ukraine. Namely they die by the score. The Warthog is still fit for COIN, which the Bronco, the Super Tucano, AT-6 Wolverine, and the aircraft AFSOC just selected, an upgunned crop duster, can all do as well, cheaper, and with better SA than the Hog.

Many years ago Fairchild was working on a 2-seat version for the Saudis. The A/C was to be equipped with a Westinghouse pod radar that provided terrain profiles for a new raster/stroke HUD that we (Kaiser Electronics) were developing for this A/C. I spent a good amount of time in Palmdale helping to integrate our new electronics on the A/C. The Saudis never followed through with acquisition. The original, again Kaiser Electronics HUD, had an enormous 8" diameter optic since it was mounted well-forward of the pilot, outside his Titanium bathtub. This was probably in the 80's, certainly before Fairchild was acquired by Grumman in 1987.
