Not only is a cruiser board quieter it's also a lot smoother, could be turnier (depending on how it's set up) and it's a lot easier to pump and roll over bigger rocks and sticks because of the larger and softer wheels. It's such an obvious choice for people have have ridden a very well set up cruiser or longboard. How does one set up a cruiser? Find a shape that you like with a kicktail and flat front then put an angled riser on the front truck with some medium soft Venom or Reflex bushings. Makes turning at any speed much smoother and more controllable. Then some good quality bearings with the softest and biggest wheels that will fit and you have yourself a mind blowingly carvy/surfy and controllable cruiser. You might just end up preferring to cruise and bomb hills instead of street skating like I did.
