about train travel-----a truly beautiful and spectacular ride is between Da Nang and Hue (central coast area) The mountains jut out into the sea in that area just north of Da Nang. Board the train and hang out on the RIGHT (starboard) side of the train as the railroad winds in and out of the mountains high above the sea. Spectacular and dramatic according to the weather.(coming south from Hue, stay on the LEFT (port) side so you will be looking out over the sea and not at the mountainside which is close to the side of the train. If you are taking the train from Ha Noi, check the schedule so you traverse this area in daylight. Also, consider renting a Honda and do the old road covering the same topography as the train. (Now there is a tunnel running through the mountain which makes the trip much shorter, but boring). (The busses all use the tunnel, by the way(

As a person about to travel to Vietnam in a month, your statement confuses me. Why would someone need a container and a plastic bag for the bathroom? There being no toilet paper makes some sense, but you seem to imply they don't have bathrooms at all. Is the need of a plastic bag for #2 a common occurrence?

I've been to Vietnam many times and I endorse the majority of what you say. I wanted to get an e visa this time but because I'm staying there 6 weeks plus it's not an option. So it's back to the mad rush off the plane to the visa on arrival desk. The main downside of this is having my checked luggage unattended while I wait to get through immigration. Totally agree about the language. It's not that easy being a tone language but try to learn thank you and sorry. It's worth the effort. I love Saigon and love Vietnam. It's my go to place in Asia. The Vietnamese may be in your face but you know where you stand. They also have a great sense of humour. I like that but I'm an Aussie so maybe I'm weird.

Great guide :) Might be worth mentioning that the pre-approval letters and E-Visas are only good if you're flying into Vietnam. If you plan on getting there by bus, like from Cambodia or Laos, you'll need a full visa in your passport before even getting on the bus. Love the section on food, those pancakes were my favourite when we were in Vietnam. So good!

Great video! I think that getting a local sim-card is well worth it. Cost us around £7.50 for a month of unlimited data, internal calls and messages. It really helped with getting around, helping with translation and interpreting menu's (although most are also printed in English). My girlfriend and I upgraded to a private two-birth cabin overnight train from Lao Cai to Hanoi. Worked out as around £18 each, but was well worth it- both slept incredibly well! Also if you do buy sun cream when in Vietnam, be careful as some have bleaching agents it (it is fashionable to be pale in Vietnam, signifies wealth).

I’ve been watching your videos for a couple months now. I found you guys via your no BS guide to El Nido. At this point, your videos are the best travel videos I’ve found on KZfaq. Your tips along with your video style are A+. I can’t thank you enough for all the recommendations you’ve given me as I travel through SE Asia myself. I would love if you did a video just like this for Thailand. As for tips for ATMs, VP bank doesn’t charge a fee and they will let you withdraw 5 million VND per transaction. I’ve been travelling Vietnam north to south for a month now, and VP bank is the only ATM I’ve used.

Some most popular and good banks you can find in every province are ACB, Sacombank, Vietcombank. Vp is good but sometime you can find them in countryside. -Vietnamese street food is usually around 20.000 to 35.000 (1->2 $). -famous communiating app are fb messenger and zalo. - grab is King. U're right :)) - always keep toilet paper and wet wipes in your backapack. - in most case MUST ask for the prices first, somes will over charge if you dnt know prices.

I've been working in (Australian) television production for over 30 years, and I must say, your videos are brilliant. I really appreciate the production value you add. Most other "tourist videos" are painful to watch, with either too much selfie stick, and/or devoid of any real take-away information, or the editing is just woeful. The general population may not appreciate (or be oblivious to) the extra work that goes into what you guys do. Not lost on me though. (I'm curious as what industry you guys came from, before the travel?) I love the way you two naturally bounce off each other with sharing the commentary, the use of relevant overlay (we call it overlay - Americans tend to call it B-roll), and the ratio of peices to camera/commentary vs music. Keep up the great work. We're off to Vietnam in 6 weeks, and looking forward to it. Cheers, Adam
@IntAffair

Wow! Thanks Adam- really means a lot! We appreciate you taking the time to write the thoughtful message 😃 I think in this situation we can't discount anyone's video as a LOT of work goes into them regardless if they are "good" or not. We've worked hard over the last 2 years to get to a production level we're proud of and we're super excited to see what the next year or two has to bring to our evolution! We come from the travel and hospitality industry. Before we started the travel videos we both worked for Expedia.com where we were account managers in the DC area. Hard to walk away from that job but still have amazing connections in the company! We have a LOT more content on the way. Let us know if you know of any television opportunities in Australia in the meanwhile 😉We're always open to traveling to new places and taking on new challenges!

I highly recommend getting a Charles Schwab checking account. No minimum. No monthly fee. It reimburses all the ATM fees at the end of the month. The catches are 1) opening the checking account will also open a brokerage account, but you can leave the account at 0. 2) they do a hard pull/inquiry.

I've spent over a year in Vietnam on eight trips since 1996. You are spot on. If you speak Vietnamese, your chances of getting what you want are multiplied many times. Even a little bit makes a difference.

My family thinks I am insane for wanting to go to Vietnam, but its always been number 1 on my list. I absolutely love the culture, and would go in a heartbeat. Due to my studies in post-secondary, a lot of job opportunities are there, and I would love to experience them. Hopefully one day ill get there.

Go check out "Vietnam Meets Dustin" to watch Dustin, a model, living in the countryside. Such a contrast from his modelling and health sciences background to seeing him muck around in the mud and loving it. Also, check out Phuc Map's videos. He's so endearing and entertaining. He's pals with Dustin. And also Max McFarlin is now based in Saigon, I think. His thick southern accent is something to behold. LOL

The Directorate for Roads of Vietnam has announced plans to issue international driving permits to local residents and recognize licenses held by foreign drivers staring in 2015. "The move was announced after the country acceded to the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic (in August),” said Nguyen Van Quyen, the agency’s deputy director. "Those who study, work or live in a foreign country may apply for an international driving permit.” The permit will carry the same validity and legal weight as the domestic license without requiring the holder to take any written or practical test, he said.

Excellent, information packed video. Thank you. Motorcycle Rental: Be VERY VERY careful. Especially if you're planning highway rides, if you don't have a Vietnamese Drivers License, your insurance will not cover any potential accidents. That's a potential deal-breaker. Most people get by with no accidents (especially in slow city traffic) but even a one-in-a-thousand chance is something I would be wary about.

@@dapooramericanhomesteadfar7192 Pretty much, few days ago i was hit pretty bad by a taxi - fucker didn't even have any. We where in Dis 2, and just demanded his insurence and no money..anyways, after telling everyone to call the traffic police the taxi driver ended up paying us 9 million strait cash. The common sense here is still stuck in the 1500's, but agree insurence is a joke here

Regarding having a driver's license: I was told that an international driver's license is valid. I just spent two months riding motorbikes in Vietnam. I was stopped by police twice for no good reason (was not speeding, had a helmet on, etc). The first time the police were friendly and laughing and asked me a few simple questions and then let me go without asking for any money. The next day, in Mui Ne, I was stopped by two policemen on one motorbike. They were clearly targeting tourists to line their own pockets illegally. They used the excuse that I did not have a driver's license (local or international) to say that I owed a 2M dong fine ($86). I had been warned that this situation could happen so I wasn't surprised. I said no, that's too much money. The police tried to say the fine was 2M, but after I resisted they said 1M would be okay and I could go. I continued to resist and offered them 500K ($22) and they finally took that cash and let me go. Locals told me that they are targeted by corrupt policemen as much or more than expats are, with the standard bribe being 200K ($9). As annoying as it is to be targeted and milked by a corrupt policeman, the bribes are still much lower in cost than the official fines given out by the Public Revenue Officers [PROs] (highway patrol, traffic police) in the West. Regarding toilet paper in Vietnam, I cannot remember any bathrooms in two months that did not have toilet paper. Of course, you should be using the sprayer first and then using the paper to dry yourself. This system is far cleaner than the Western system of smearing crap all over your skin with paper, leaving a residue that lingers for hours until you happen to take a shower (so disgusting).

@@baoishere7 Try smelling someone's bung hole after they take a crap and just wiping with toilet paper. Believe me, the water plus drying off with toilet paper is much cleaner, albeit more challenging for those of whom grew up using only toilet paper.
