Walter Matthau, Liza Minnelli, Dudley Moore, and Richard Pryor open the 55th Academy Awards in 1983, featuring an introduction by Academy President Fay Kani and red carpet arrivals including Christopher Reeve, Charles Durning, Margot Kidder, Ben Kingsley, Jamie Lee Curtis, Robert Preston, Steve Guttenberg, Richard Attenborough, Tom Selleck, Carol Burnett, Jessica Lange, Matt Dillon, Raquel Welch, Eddie Murphy, Teri Garr, James Mason, Lesley Ann Warren, Louis Gossett Jr., Cher, and more.

Buz Kohan, the song's lyricist, later said "I had written the opening number, called 'It All Comes Down to This.' They were all scared stiff, but ordinarily if you're scared, then you put in the time and rehearse. They took the opposite approach. So Liza was forced to carry the number, Walter was singing in his own zone somewhere, Dudley was just trying to walk down these steps without falling, and Richard Pryor, well, I think they told him the next day that he was there."

Actually, it was Larry Grossman and one of the program's writers, Buz Kohan, who composed the opening number.

This was the final Oscar telecast for longtime producer Howard W. "Howie" Koch, Sr., whose Oscar telecast producing record was later broken by the late Gilbert Cates.

At 4.33 there seems to be somebody running out from either the 1st or 2nd row of the audience. They must have had prior knowledge of what was coming next😂

Observing Walter Matthau singing alongside Richard Pryor and Liza Minnelli is one of the most bizarre things I have ever seen. The two guys on the end look so uncomfortable. I have a feeling this was supposed to be funnier than it was, but I can't really tell.

I love Walter Matthau, Dudley Moore, Liza Minnelli, and of course Richard Pryor. But I remember 1983, and I think even by then, this intro song and all of these folks except Pryor would have seemed an oddly old fashioned choice. And to throw Richard Pryor in this mix was an extremely awkward thing to do. He seemed to agree lol. I guess there were still a lot of old traditional folks in charge of the academy and the program then.

I remembered this train wreck and took a look back to see if it was as bad as I recalled. Whose idea was it to have all 4 Oscar hosts sing and dance that opening number? Liza Minnelli was fine of course. But why have her flanked by Walter Matthau, Dudley Moore, and Richard Pryor, 3 guys who could neither sing nor dance? Embarrassingly bad.

Please, Academy. I'll hit you with a from the Godfather but in reference to my request: Leave the Oscar for popular movie. Take back the music of Bill Conti. Bring back his magical music. Just bring back the magic of the Oscars and lose the stupid Oscar for the most popular movie. That, to me, is the Academy at it's worst.

Four great talents but only three greats. Pryor was drugged out of his mind. Did not deserve to be on stage with the others.
