I remember yeeeeeaaaaars ago as a novice formulator, I confronted a brand about using AA...accusing them of depending on the hydrolysis of AA to convert the active into HQ....essentially misleading the consumer with HQ free claims. Well...I'm a little more calm and wiser now, and I happily formulate with AA. It's all about the formulation parameters and stability testing. Get that right and your product is golden. Thanks for great coverage on this topic!

Super insightful-glad I caught this. My brand (Undefined Beauty) has a brightening serum with Kojic Acid, Alpha Arbutin, Niacinamide, Vit C derivative and Licorice Root and I believe they all play their unique role in the formula so glad AA isn’t going away 🙌🏾

Arbutin is completely safe because Hydroquinone is perfectly safe when used as directed and not overused or misused. To me it’s only a question in on whether high percentages should be sold OTC or be RX only. Problem is people often don’t use these kinds of products appropriately even if they have derm telling them what they should & shouldn’t do BTW: You’re correct about the US FDA banning hydroquinone but I don’t think they’re enforcing it well. I stocked up on my favorites when I heard about the ban but I’m still finding it OTC in New York. I guess it’s too popular- if something makes a lot of money _(and thus brings the Government those tax dollars)_ they don’t want to bother enforcing any of those laws. It’s similar to how selling decorative/cosmetic contact lenses without a doctor’s RX has been illegal for SO MANY YEARS in yet you can find them in shops everywhere.

I totally agree with you.. the issue with hydroquinone is there is so much risk of misuse due to the high number of side effects so I think its good its prescription only... its likely there will be a tightening of regulations on arbutin but to what extent I dont know.. sending you lots of love xx

I use my Alpha Arbutin 2x daily along with my tranexamic acid Exaglow serum. I love combining theses 2 so I hope I’ll still be able to. I myself have used AA for pigmentation, I have very sensitive, easily reddened, dry, fair skin and I used it with no side effects and it worked fast. However the moment I stop using it, the pigmentation comes straight back. It’s been banned in NZ for ages but I got some smuggled over haha. I can’t afford most hyperpigmentation products however I’ve had good results with liquorice and niacinamide. Vitamin c and azelaic acid didn’t seem to work much for me (but the vit c made my skin nice in other ways and the azelaic reduced my blemishes). Also I use retinol like 3x a week in the cool months and usually use a really strong antioxidant in summer and it works slowly but surely for me :)

However when I learnt it can transform to hydroquinone in the skin I didn’t repurchase as I don’t have any significant hyperpigmentation issues other than spots taking their time to go away. Although I've had no severe issues with Arbutin, both products I've tried have seemed to break me out. I'll admit that a breakout for me is like 3 pimples, but when it's rare to have anything like larger pimples, one notices when they show up... thing is that the only thing different in my skin care has been arbutin at these times. Since I've been using adapalene a couple months now, I am not sure about the possibilities of a small purge this time, so I am giving the Good Molecules product a second chance in a couple months to see what happens. But yeah, nothing serious just a few pimples. LoL I've only "broken out" from two, possibly this third, products since beginning my skin care journey a few years ago and all have arbutin so I don't think I need a 2x4 to the head if the Good Molecules serum seems to cause another breakout. 😬😂

Really? Here in USA azelaic acid is available OTC up to 10%. 15% and 20% must be prescribed. In May, 2022, I was prescribed 15% by a dermatologist from Apostrophe, online dermatology service. It has helped fade my melasma. In July, I went to a local derm, and started using a very mild tretinoin-hydroquinone-hydrocortisone-kojic acid (plus vit. E) cream, at bedtime. For now, I’ve still been using the azelaic acid on my throat because I was worried about my skin sensitivity. But so far, everything is working excellently. I AM using a bit heavier moisturiser (LaRoche Posay Cicaplast Balm B5). I am Black American, and have sensitive, normal to dry, older skin (no acne, etc.). Gentle cleansing mornings, and gentle double cleanse evenings, and wearing SPF 50 sunscreens every day, plus reapplying every 2-4 hours. Plus UPF sun protective hats, a new umbrella (parasol), and clothing. Cheers to you!
