What's Therapy?

What's Therapy?

How do we determine sanity? What's a healthy relationship between mind and world? Are bread dumplings bad for astronomy? To answer these and other important questions, let's take a look at this fascinating novel.
Here's the full exclusive interview with Adam Ehrlich Sachs [warning: spoilers]: / 55729468
Get the book, seriously: www.indiebound.org/book/97812...
Adam Ehrlich Sach's website: www.adamehrlichsachs.com/
If you hop the paywall for the rest of the posts at / whatstherapy you can hear (and download) a louder and shorter version of the piano tune in the background of this video, as well as a longer version of the outro beat. And other stuff from the past of course (and the future).
Credit for the art of the old astronomer from the book's cover goes to Alex Merto (alexmerto.com). I figured it would be o.k. to use my adaptation of this image in the intro/outro to this video, and the thumbnail, since this video is completely and positively about the book, and I figured it would be considered fair use since the image has been adapted and transformed significantly. If you are the artist of this image or the publisher of this book and you disagree with my judgment on this, let me know.

"the overton window of sanity" is such an interesting concept even just within itself

You mentioned having people in your life who talk or interrupt a lot. I used to do this often, and I’m not sure if my perspective will help but neither issue had to do with how much I cared about what other people were saying or thinking that my ideas were more important. Particularly the over talking tended to stem from the inability to discern, in real time, which details are necessary and which are superfluous. Not excusing the behavior but for me it was mostly because I have ADHD and my thought process was more: a.) if I don’t say this right now I _will_ forget it b.) if I don’t say this right now the conversation will move on and I will never get the chance. Like I said above, it isn’t an excuse for it, and it took me years to basically train myself out of it. I think working as a bartender helped with switching to active listening instead. But I had to completely switch my thought process in conversation and focus more on listening and asking questions. A couple of things I do to help with the poor impulse control aspect of interrupting/over talking, I sometimes will just wait a couple of minutes and if it was as relevant as I thought to the overall conversation then it still should be, if not then it probably wasn’t important. I also try not to say anything that takes more than a few sentences or know I can say concisely. (Which is obviously still difficult for me on a first draft lol.) Honestly it’s kind of swung in the opposite direction for me, I had so much anxiety about people thinking I didn’t care or was rude because of it that I tend to keep most things to myself now. So I still need to work on evening it out a bit but I’d rather have people know that I care about what they are saying than the alternative. I know this wasn’t the point of the video, which was very interesting by the way.

this video got me to purchase and read the novel - appropriately enough, on the flight back from a philosophy of mathematics conference in germany - and it's now one of my favorites would never have found this otherwise - thanks a million!

I interrupt people sometimes because I see them start talking as an "okay" for there to be talking happening. I'm working on it.
