Yeah, but Reo never sounded that same without him. Gary rocking riffs and energy made that band great. Even when Cronin changed them to a power ballad band. Gary's searing guitar solos made Cronin's ballad songs worth listening to.

In about 1980, I took guitar lessons from a guy who was originally in this band, Bob Crownover. REO wasn’t very popular then and he was only in the band briefly in the late 60’s. I wonder what ever happened to Bob. Did anyone take lessons from him in the 70’s/80’s in Champaign, IL? Also, I remember Terry being a car salesman at Subaru in the early 90’s in Champaign. The origins of REO Speedwagon are almost as far apart from commercial REO as the old Fleetwood Mac blues band was from the commercial Fleetwood Mac. It really gives you a respect for the dues these guys paid to make it to the top. You know they played shit holes and dives, and had major ups and downs on the way to the top. They are as "rock n' roll" as any band out there, despite the overshadowing of the 1980s power ballad fame. These guys were ready to be sacked by their label by the time Hi Infidelity was finished. And just like that, boom, an entirely new chapter, leaving the thoughts of this R.E.O in the dust bin of history. When you consider the era, and Gary Richrath's skill level compared against the other heavy hitters in rock guitar, he was easily as good as anyone out there. Almost has a Hendrix-like quality to him in this video. Gary stayed true to his roots -- wielding a Les Paul and a 50-watt Marshall. He didn't sell out to a Boss pedal train and a solid state GK amp in the 80s. Gary was a purist, and simplicity was his genius.

I caught that and am wondering the same thing. The thing is though, Kevin Cronin wrote three of the eight songs on R.E.O. / T.W.O. and Terry Luttrell has no writing credits on the album.
