We're finally looking at Pacific Comics Groo the Wanderer #1 but instead of just doing a history or a read-through, I'm taking a look at 12 classic Groo tropes that started right at the very beginning. And we'll see a few other cool things along the way!

Videos about Groo the Wanderer from Mad Magazine Writer and Cartoonist Sergio Aragonés. Comic Book artist Mark Evanier, Stan Sakai (who makes Usagi Yojimbo comics) and Tom Luth who is the colorist of the comics. Marvel comics used to publish Groo the Wanderer under the Epic Comics brand for artist owned comics. Before that Pacific Comics and Eclipse Comics published Groo the Wanderer. After Marvel Comics, Groo went to Image Comics for a year and for the longest time, Groo is published by Dark Horse Comics. Rufferto is Groo's Dog, Conan the Barbarian and Tarzan of the Apes have had crossover comics with Groo too.

I also really miss the two page spreads. The detail was amazing and so many classic Groo elements--big fancy scroll with poem, credit and title, often with title maidens, Mark's weird job--it was all so iconic. I used to spend hours pouring over them trying to find all the little hidden details and sight gags.

Yes! And you never knew where the Hidden Message was going to be, so you had to check all over the splash for it too! I loved the town scenes especially.

This was a wonderful video. I love examining the roots of Groo and taking careful looks at how things have changed. I frequently read too fast and my eyes fly past these sorts of details. I'm imagining a future, a decade from now, when you've got a devoted video for each comic in the Groo canon!

Thank you! I have the same problem, I often read comics too fast. I read the words and don’t spend time with the art. I have to find ways of slowing down to spend time with the whole things. Sometimes making videos helps, I’ve been working on a database of Groo info and reading while adding to the database slows me down too. There’s a LOT in these comics that rewards revisiting and almost obsessing over. 😀

Wonderful video, so excited to have found the channel. Loved the exploration. The introduction by Senior Aragones and brief quips about Groo haunting him for years 'demanding to be drawn' felt like a nod to Robert E. Howard and Conan's troubling orgin. I would however be stoked to be wrong and I hope the fandom unearths eariler treasure. Keep up the great work, instant subscription 👍

Thanks Logan! Glad you found the channel too! I’m not familiar with the Conan novels, but perhaps I’ll put one on my summer reading list and see how it goes. 😀 Mark Evanier seems like a well educated guy and of course, a clever writer, so I wouldn’t be surprised if that was a reference. Thanks for making that observation! ⚔️

Interesting ... the title of this adventure in Groo #1 is "Friends and Enemies" and just a few 32 years later he did the Groo mini series entitled "Friends and FOES". Coincidence? Methinks, YES!

I love these very in-depth analysis videos! They always show something from a point of view I hadn't considered before, and re-spark my love of Groo and Sergio's work!

Thanks Kevin! It’s always my goal to add something unique to the Groo discussion. I don’t want to just “read comics.” I’m happy that you think this video might have done that. 😀

This is fantastic. I loved these first sketches and comics of Groo, Taranto, Sage, and all the others. So much hard work went into these. Regarding that last picture: It could be one of the first, when studying the style it seems like it, but I am not sure. I guess only Sergio Aragones knows. Perhaps he has the very first drafts and written texts about this fact. ⚔

I have an inkling that it’s pre-Pacific Comics at least. 😀

I'm not sure there are many (if any) other examples of creator owned characters who have been published consistently for 40+ years. Certainly none as entertaining or richly drawn. Wish could get 40 more years of Groo and 10 more issue number 1s! 😀 Thanks for these Darren!!

Love and Rockets from the Hernandez brothers beat Groo by about 3 months and is still ongoing, but it's definitely a very exclusive club!

The only other thing (creation) that I enjoy as much that has lasted (for some of us) 40+ years, is the Commodore 64. Also with a first appearance in 1982! 😀

I finally got one of those bookmarks. I told myself my Groo collection was complete, but there's always something else out there.

Hey Shayne! Congratulations! I hope I’m not an “enabler” in your Groo addiction. 😉 I wish I was able to delude myself into believing my Groo connection is complete (enough.) I just filled a major gap in my collection this week and am looking forward to taking a (number of?) really close look at it in upcoming videos. 😉

@@GrooTube I've been a collector for my whole life, so it wouldn't be fair to blame you for my obsession. Plus, you've got all those foreign editions and I don't have any. Not because don't want them, but because I've set some limits to my collecting because of budget & space limits. These limits are completely arbitrary, since I am trying to find examples of foreign editions of MAD.

Ha! I know a bit about your collection, and wouldn’t dream of taking any credit for it… I’m just talking about your emotional (and financial) health! 😉 I think there’s always something else that could be added to a collection, unless we set (our own arbitrary (as you say) limits.) I’ve been thinking of doing a video about collecting and collectors for a long while… maybe we’ll talk! 😀

@@GrooTube We've both been down the collecting rabbit hole for a long time. Always willing to talk about collecting. Like to share what I know with those that want to hear about it (know your audience), and love to learn new things about my hobbies. Let me know what you have in mind.

Great comparison! Were there any letters or interviews mentioning how the Groo crew (Sergio, Mark and Stan) came to be?
@GrooTube
@GrooTube Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, there are. Sergio and Mark (and Stan and Tom) have talked about it numerous times in interviews and videos and panels. I’ve heard the stores, but have never documented them, so I don’t think I’m the one to ask. If you haven’t watched Mark and Sergio’s Q&A videos, I’d suggest checking there. 😀
