I don't think this is over yet. We're gonna see a TREMEDOUS season finale episode tying this loop. I don't think when Malloy said: "This family is more powerful then time itself" for no reason.

I am hoping the family is gone and we get a Evil Time Traveling Gordon who seeks revenge, he might even be the creator of the Kaylons. When all is said and done the title of the episode will have multiple meanings when it's revealed that the Twice time travelled sandwich is the cause of everything. Some time techno jargon to explain how a sandwich, that travelled both back and forward in time, was altered and by eating it 3 months from now Gordon is also altered

@@RoyCyberPunk It's just a fun theory. Time travel, who is to say that isn't a backstory cooked up so the Union would let them in the door. Gordon's Uniform symbol is two gears, and the Kaylons claim they were created by the Builders. Gordon wanted to live with his family, screw the rules that only seemed to apply to him. How might he see the Union? Heartless soulless? So as revenge he creates Kaylons. Heartless, soulless machines that act to the letter of the law with no deviation for emotion. Issac was a 'spy' collecting proof that the Union has rules but doesn't always follow them. This would be in direct violation of the 'Perfect Union' kaylons. And what did the Union to to Gordon's rule breaking family? Wiped them out just like the Kaylons are now doing to the 'False Union'. They could even work in the Evil Gordon had a change of heart but it was too late and the Kaylons rebelled and killed him. Would still fit the lore then :)

Ever wonder what happened the "bridge cat" Malloy asked if they could get? Well, in lieu of flowers for his in the past funeral, his obituary say to instead donate to the *Altadena Cat Sanctuary* . Cool little nod there to Gordon's obvious appreciation for cats. Freeze frame and read the obit @02:39. Amazing point about there having to be a Malloy on Earth to send the message. You are right. If this gets followed up on at all, the phrase, "this family is stronger than time" might have significance later in the series. Interesting point regarding the temporal laws, if there is no time travel tech yet in the Orville save for this new-ish device, why are there already over 50 temporal laws to break?

Great episode. I agree about the alternate time line and Malloy and family continuing to exist in the multiverse. They mentioned alternate time lines early in the episode when talking about a paradox with the sandwich. I think the reason they had Ed act so cruelly in front of the family was meant to really drive the point home to the audience that taking him back years earlier would potentially destroy his Malloy's happy life and add drama to the moment. It did make Ed look really bad though. I liked the fact that Isaac and Charly didn't resolve their differences on this one mission. Much better to have it play out over time. I bet the sandwich makes it's return before the end of the season :)

A leader of a group of people cannot be effective if they are trying to also be friends with the people they are supposed to lead. We saw a first hand display of this when older Kelley had a talk with her younger self in the last ARANOV device episode. I think we are seeing Ed grow into the role of being a leader, which has the corresponding necessity of him moving away from being friends with the crew. This is especially challenging with Gordon, who is his best friend.

I agree. That's not my problem with Mercer. It's his inconsistent conduct and decision making for example, letting that infected Admiral go in episode 2 of season 3 and in _A Tale of Two Topas_ he disobeyed a direct order from a superior officer. (He should've been court-martialed.) That is not only conduct unbecoming, but completely inconsistent with his new: ALL IN CAPTAIN MERCER, mode. I guess the dude is bipolar. What you said was completely right, he didn't have to do it in front of the wife and child, that was uncalled for, seriously wrong, and truly messed up. But then again in hindsight, I think it was totally intentional, I think that's how they wanted us to feel. Mercer’s behavior was in keeping with the story line. At the point of the encounter in the living room, Mercer and the other crew members felt completely betrayed by Gordon for not adhering to his oath. You could see it on the faces of all three standing in the doorway…they were *issed! Had he gone with them then, they would have thrown him straight in the brig. This betrayal, being a central theme of the episode from the start, opens the door for extreme behavior towards him.

Here's my prediction: Later on in the Season we're going to see something happen similar to in Season 2 where the timeline changes because Gordon didn't stay in the 21st century. The crew will discover that 2025 Gordon was right in that him having 2 kids in the past lead to his family line creating the Planetary Union, so they find a way to send him back in time again to return to Laura. The cruelness of telling Gordan he was to kill himself for the good of the universe while being all righteous in all the Mocklin episodes where he decided life of Topa over the fate of the universe. Also, Kelly did things FAR beyond forgiveness in the teleporting planet episode by making herself a god of a planet. And she hasn't got the minimum amount of punishment from that. Who know how many people were killed by the Kelly religion. The hypocrisy was unbearable.

The Orville's second time jump brought them to 2015, one month after Gordon arrived there. Gordon, however, didn't send the signal into the future until SIX months after he arrived. Pulling him out early prevents him from ever sending the message. Paradox. Seems unlikely, given that they described this sort of paradox in detail in the beginning of the episode, that that was just an oversight. This ride ain't over, folks.
@victorpradha9946

Yeah, plus Charly and Isaac did a whole bunch of ripple effect stuff that was NOT undone (getting those Bikers' rides etc). So there's a time segment from the 6 month to 10 years on Earth Gordon that was not undone because the reason for their visit to earth was Gordon's message which he had not yet sent as of the one month mark. There's definitely a separate timeline with Gordon and his family still rolling on!
@HariSeldon913
@HariSeldon913 2 жыл бұрын
No mention was made, but they could get around the signal paradox by having Gordon record the same message and leaving a device behind where it couldn't be found that would send the message at the appropriate time then vaporize itself.

@@guyincognito8440 They seemed worried about creating a paradox, so I presented something that would prevent it. Doesn't matter if they used it or not. As for the bikes, they are loud and if someone decided to peek out the window when they heard two bikes get started and pull away when nobody had left the bar, they would have had two dozen angry bikers chasing them, which would interfere with the mission.

i think the Gordon that was rescued after a month taking the news about his alternative self being erased well was pretty realistic. He was only gone for a month, he didnt live 3 years in isolation and than breaking down and saying screw the rules. And you can tell he was motivated to following the rules cause the erased him did so for 3 years so at a month he couldnt see himself being able to break the rules.

Yeah, Mercer was a big mean heavy, but the way I understood it is that he didn't realize that he could use relativistic speed to go forward in time, and that the dysonium(?) wasn't needed to get back home... this was the original drama, wasn't it? They needed the macguffin to get back home again, thus the reason for sending out Burke and Isaac. I think it dawned on him, only in the heat of the confrontation with Gordon that he didn't need to be a jerk, but could instead could find another way around the problem. That makes him a bit more heroic in my sight, especially after doing the hard thing that he had to do by insisting that Gordon came home. A good leader knows how to pivot when new opportunities are recognized. I suppose in reality that the writers wrote themselves into a hole and then they too went "aha" when they realized they could use relativistic speeds to solve the story.
@kristendelaney5196
@kristendelaney5196 2 жыл бұрын
LaMarr specifically says "without more dysonium, we can't get back home from here" (21:40). Yeah, that's a Kurtzman-sized hole in the plot. This show is not perfect, but it tends to not make such un-forced errors. I do see at 55:15 that after Isaac reports that they have secured the dysonium that Kelly and Ed have that look with each other, which seems to indicate that, yes, they had discussed a plan before they confronted Gordon, that they would go back 10 more years and then presumably move forward, also using the same dysonium supply. They would have to take Gordon back regardless, but with more dysonium, they now have the option of going back further in the past which would be easier for all involved. While the confrontation would not have been necessary, it does some great exposition of the strength of the captain when he has to do something like this and the love Gordon has for his family.... unnecessary but valuable dramatic exposition that give some gravity to the situation and builds on these characters. I think there is no question that Ed was going to 'win' that fight using whatever means were necessary, no matter how sad the outcome would be. For some reason they burned out the time machine again (which thankfully takes this deus ex out of commission for other stories, until they 'repair' it again, maybe next year). It turns out that at 1:02:10 LaMarr does figure out the relativistic travel angle: "I'm a g-damned idiot". Why didn't Isaac figure it out? I have no idea. I suppose if he were queried he would replay that he wasn't asked... after all, this is the same robot who lived for centuries on that Kelly-world back in S1. Further, it gives Lamarr a chance show off as genius engineer he is with a mouth full of technobabble, rather than having the robot jump to the end. It turns out that Isaac did express concern for collisions with interstellar particles or whatever, so maybe he did not immediately think it advisable? In any case, yes, Isaac should have seen that possibility. Thankfully this story is strong enough otherwise to carry the day... the characterization is strong, the story is interesting. This science problem here could have been fixed with only some minor edits or insertions and the story could have had all the same dramatic arcs. On a whole other note, I was sort of expecting a Star Trek IV ending where the 20th century citizen exposed to 24th century events would be taken forward in the timeline... where Gordon's family would become part of the crew and travel forward. That could have been very interesting. "Lasting Impressions" was a favorite episode for me--it had so much heart, and I loved Laura! (But no comment on the Mochlans smoking binge... or the club-dancing--ha!) The presumption would be that, to allow Laura to come forward in the timeline, it would be because her life left little impact in the 21st century--no children, great discoveries, early death, etc--that missing her would not be a problem. Ed sure slammed the door on that "happily ever after ending" and I respect that, but it would have been interesting for there to be another family on the ship and to see Gordon as a family man who was 10 years older. Laura was not nearly as compelling a character in this episode, but she had already been fleshed-out so well before.
@kristendelaney5196
@kristendelaney5196 2 жыл бұрын
How do you interpret that look based on the posture with Gordon before and after the message from the ship? Again, the show’s not perfect, but easily fixed with a little more exposition or a little more suspension of belief which is required in all sci-fi. Indeed, these are the nits that fans pick at. I may not be right, so I’ll ask you to make a case. How do you interpret “the look”? FWIW, I also did not like the psychobabble about why the travelers ended up where they did because of their thoughts. But the most important part is that none of these factors really undermine the rest of the story. The characters and drama are strong and this storytelling error need not be a cause for discarding the whole thing. This is contrasted with my experience Discovery (which I unceremoniously quit somewhere in the middle of S2, cancelled CBS and never looked back) not only are the stories badly constructed, but the characters are unlikable and have very little development, and it is hard to care about what happens. I felt stupider after watching that stuff. And so, I do appreciate and perhaps agree with the criticisms of this show… there is a lot expected of it and it has done a good job in its three-season run, and I don’t want to see it lose its story-telling “credibility”. There is a craftsmanship and heart that I do see and appreciate in this effort, contrasted with the brain-eating zombie that official “Star Trek” has become under Bad Robot.

Would have been nice if there was even one line to address this, even as an unanswered question. With Maloy, Ed should have gotten the message from John in private they could go back and get Gordon from 10 years ago. He then could tell 2015 Gordon they were leaving him be, and walked away. Let 2015 Gordon believe he's getting to live out his life with his family. Ed and crew go back and get Gordon 10 years earlier, who knows nothing about the life of 2015 Gordon. Great episode! If we're dissecting the plot, a few things stand out to me... 1. Why does Gordon get teleported to Earth when the Orville has to travel there? The time travel device doesn't seem to behave consistently. 2. Unless I missed it, they didn't explain how the Kalon knew about the temporal device. I assumed the episode would come full circle to reveal this but it didn't. Maybe it will be revealed in a future episode? 3. Seven years seems like a very short time to build yourself up from literally nothing to becoming a jet pilot, getting married, having a son who looks to be about 5 or 6 and (presumably) owning a house. Well done Malloy! 4. If it's so easy to fast-forward to the future then why isn't everyone doing it? I get that it's potentially dangerous but it looked super easy. 5. If the physics of the show is supposed to resemble real-world physics and established sci-fi then this "field" that normally protects ships travelling at FTL velocities should be integral to the mechanism which allows them to do so in the first place (like Star Trek's Warp field). Turning it off should mean they can't travel FTL or even close to it due to the exponential increase in their mass and energy requirement. However, I still liked that they found a solution based on real physics.

4:47 It is even more evil about Ed telling the family since he had always planned to go back in time to when Maloy first got there. This is shown with the side quest with Isaac's team going to drill for and take the dysonium from the earth. This action would never be allowed because it would be a very big change to the time-line seeing as this substance would be needed to be found for into the future to help with creating and powering the space ships. How would Ed justify taking it and affecting the time-line. Then there is the fact that when they came back they stopped the devastating attack the one convoy by the Kaylon. That is very bad for the time-line!! Those ships and all it's people should be dead.

Hmmmm, your suggestion that observer perception may be an important component in directing one's time travel journey is very interesting. They made use of a similar idea in Stargate SG-1 when certain time travel mechanisms were activated, the user had to "think" about where and when he wanted to go.

The whole deal is that time Travel is just stupid because it could not ever exist. Having said that.... First of all there is the biography they show of this Guy having died at the age of sixty nine after being a pilot. Secondly there is the cell phone picture taken With maloy in it. Last of all is the fact that, as he points out, they went back before the time that he would have actually sent the message, Thus negating the message. in order to be true to the concept of time travel, They would've had to show a failed mission in which malloy was stuck and never came back.

Even if Gordon's family still exists, they should now exist in a parallel universe or alternative timeline. It shouldn't be possible for him to just show up make in the main timeline without some sort of dimension/timeline jumping tech. And where would he get that in the 21st century?
@kevinhughes6707
@kevinhughes6707 2 жыл бұрын
There are no paradoxes…I believe multiple timelines exist throughout the universe, not just on Earth. Stars going supernova create new timelines, as do black holes. A human traveling in time creates a new timeline by the act’s very nature, however, one’s timeline and consciousness are mutually exclusive. You can exist outside of your timeline, but you can’t forget where you came from. If I go back and kill my grandfather when he was younger, in that new timeline that is created by me traveling back, that young man is simply deceased…he would not meet my grandmother, and in that timeline, I would not have been born. It has no bearing on the timeline that I originally came from. There are no paradoxes. Gordon and his family live on in the timeline created by him traveling back. The new timeline is evidenced by the message being sent six months into it, and the crew retrieving Gordon after only one month (also a new timeline). Totally guessing here, I have no way to back any of this up…I play bass for goodness sake.

Also wouldn't there be two Orville's and crew in that timeline now. The device in Laymans terms transports the ship or people to points in time and doesn't drag them through time. So the ship flying at FTL means everything happens normally outside of the ship. So another Orville was constructed along with the births of the entire crew

This episode failed in 3 major ways. 1 and most important, the episode should have started on earth with Malone's character on earth. You would have gotten his point of the situation better than Seth's. 2. This could have avoided the wordy text, from him about his family, making you REALLY care about them. Plus , the whole Kaylon attack was pointless (duh if the humans could an alternative for time travel...) and finally 3 the ending epilog was was awful. Better ending at the fade off without him knowing what happened. This could have set up. Numeral plots. Anywhere from the evil Malone,as mentioned, to Seth's dealing with his decision to Union going after both. One for violating the directive, to creating yet another time-line, as that isn't their Malone.and two not reporting what happened to see what the higher upside might do. Peace. .

Am I the only one who caught the ambiguous ending? Ed said, "2 kids will never be born" as they panned out to Ed and Kelly. Which makes me believe Gordon is the great great great great Grandparent of Ed Mercer and maybe a different generation of offspring branched off and Kelly was born as well. Very interesting to think about. Also, this is one of those episodes that can be an endless loop. when you go back and watch the beginning, you see him looking at a picture of his wife on his phone and when he said, "it feels like I know her somehow." Not realizing why he was in love with this women. So he was right when he said, "Our love is stronger than time." Not to mention, he fell in love with her music back in the 21st Century so that could be why he picked up learning the guitar, not really knowing why he had an attraction towards it. What if the song he sang on the Orville was the same song she sang when he first laid eyes on her? The lyrics to the song was "Anyway, I love you, that's all I've got to say". If she sang that song 400 years ago, and he is singing it 400 years in the future, they are telling each other they love each other 400 years apart 😭😭😭 Such good Storytelling!

According to special relativity, time passes more slowly for people inside a moving spaceship than for stationary observers outside the spaceship. The faster the spaceship moves, the slower time passes within. If the spaceship is going at 99.9999999999999% the speed of light, outside observers will indeed see it taking a little over 200 years to travel 200 light-years. But based on Einstein's time dilation equation, people inside the spaceship will experience the journey as taking about 5 minutes. The writers of the episode had the general concepts correct; they were just off by 0.0000999999999% the speed of light.
