I was at Villa Park on April 15th 1989 for Norwich City's first FA Cup semi-final since the famous 1959 cup run.
Whilst we were disappointed with the outcome of this game, we had no idea what was going on at Hillsborough at the same time. I didn't find out until we got to Watford Gap services on the M1 on the way home.

I was there at Villa Park at the other game. Outside the Villa ground between terraced houses there was also overcrowding and briefly carried off feet that day in a wave of bodies. RIP

I don't miss those days; just a year later those two back to back semi-finals were one of the best days of television sport, let alone, football in that era. Both of those matches were 'insane' and certainly had an air of magic: Palace avenging their 9 - 0 loss at Anfield earlier that season and Oldham taking Man United to a replay. Until then, you'd have to stay up late to watch the highlights of the cup semi-finals.

I was there, as an Evertonian in the Witton end. Such an eerie atmosphere in the second half, as the word had got around about deaths at Hillsborough. The Everton players must have wondered what was going on when they came towards us at the end and only got some polite applause. RIP the 96.

I was there too, with my dad, my friend and his dad. We had gone up in a 1987 Sierra !! You can see ther overcrowding here, behind the goal at 0:06 as the crowd fall forwards. I think we were in the upper tier of the Holte End. It was just as bad, if not worse at Upton Park for the 1/4 final. I will never forget this day. Before mobile phones people around us had pocket radios and we'd stopped watching the match before long to get updates on the Hillsborough situation. I was 16 at the time and knew that this was a major catastrophe unfolding as we listened. i also knew that that day with stay with football for the rest of my life... and many, many thousands of others'. The signs had been at Hillsborough since at LEAST 1981 with the Spurs Vs Wolves match.

@108804174156431004323 We went down to Upton Park to see the first leg of of the quarter final. I'm sure we took the club coach then. We would have gone to the home fixture against West Ham, I'm sure. My dad had a 1983 Sierra. 2.0GL estate. My friend's dad's was a 1987 1.6GL. Gutless but very comfortable !!

@@craigeast3682 "First Leg???" - I actually meant 'first game'. It wasn't over 2 legs but had to be replayed as it was 0-0 at Upton Park, so the replay was at Carrow Road. "Upper Tier Holte End??" Yes, the Holte End at Villa Park, where Norwich played Everton in this clip, had and still has two tiers. [ Update - My bad. It has 2 tiers now but didn't then. ] "What are you on about???" - Can't you follow what I've written ? It's not that difficult ! I can believe you when you say it was bad in the Holte End. I went to Villa Park a lot in the 80's and early 90's although it was rarely full when Villa played. There was this one match though - 5 years later - Villa v Tranmere league cup semi - i'd never seen it as packed as that before - crush control barriers were useless and luckily I managed to get out - I remember seeing this young kid getting trampled though. It was scary and it was lucky no-one died.

I was a neutral in the Holte End with Norwich. Remember the score board repeatedly showing the latest Hillsborough score as 0-0 until just before half time, then changed to Match Suspended. Only at full time it said "Match Abandoned". In the car back to London with 4 Everton mates deep concern as it was reported that 6 had died and they had friends and family at Hillsborough. Huge shock and disbelief at the early paper stand at Victoria of the full extent of the tragedy. The days without mobiles with frantic worry.

The match highlights weren't actually broadcast by the BBC until cup final day a month later. There wasn't much by the way of highlights to show anyway as, regardless of events overshadowing it, it was a pretty forgettable match in it's own right.

I was there and because we were involved in a few semis at villa Park we use to head to the laselles social club. We came out singing, got to the club and the TV was all about Hillsborough. We were just horrified and drove home in silence. Strangely enough I don't remember the game on the horrible day.

I remember at half time hearing people talking about 3 people had died and the announcer said the other semi was delayed due to crowd congestion... it wasn't until we got back to car we heard the news. It was a very sombre drive back home... The game wasn't too bad but totally overshadowed by the days events.

The score board stated serious crowd disturbance. The rumbling on the terraces was " what the f have they done now!" No mention of fatalities. Went round to the Villa main entrance to pick up a present I had left for my girlfriend and the stewards mentioned 50+ dead. From ecstacy to sadness and worry regarding loved ones at Hillsborough. The coach was like going to a funeral. Concerned relatives waiting for coaches on Priory Road to return from Sheffield. Awful.

I was in the Trinity road stand that day. Truly awful experience hearing the tragic events in Sheffield when we left the ground. This seemed to herald the end of the great Everton side in the 80s. Paul Bracewell .never recovered from the serious ankle injury he got at Newcastle on new years day 1986. Pat Van Den Hauwe, Gary Stevens and Trevor Steven would leave the next season. Villa Park was a perfect venue for semi finals. Even when the great Everton side in 1969 chose the venue and semi final to produce their worst display for years on a bleak cold Saturday afternoon in March 1969, losing to a last minute goal against Man City. Later, in 1980, West Ham then in the second division, produced uncharacteristic heavy tackling to frustrate Gordon Lee's side.

I was there, decked in yellow and green watching what turned out to be a pretty forgettable game, not just for the quality of the football that day. This was the season of inflatable mascots - remember them ? - and there were hundreds of blown-up canaries in the stands. Disappointed with the result, we trudged out back to the coaches as other news became much clearer, and our game didn't matter anymore. To this day, I have never been on a journey anywhere in such solemn silence as there was that evening coming back from Birmingham

Would have been interesting to see if our ball had come out for there instead of the Dark Side’s. Would they have supported us and our fans Hillsborough memorial anniversaries as well as we have theirs? Would there have been as much come out of it as there has been? I guess we’ll never know will we?

Good question Martin and sadly I don't think they would have. In my experience it has only ever been one way with Liverpool - it has always been on there terms. Would it have gone on so long? Not sure. SYP are scum. If we had of been at Hillsborough that day they would still have denied any responsibility. I think our club and our fans would have got more sympathy on the back of not having Heysel. There arrogance and dismissive attitude towards killing 39 people is disgusting. Again sadly they truly do believe it's never there fault. Liverpool fans are universally detested, we are not.
