A couple of the people in my last unit were at COP Keating. One was a medic and the other other was a combat photographer. I don't believe either were at this specific battle, I know the combat photographer wasn't, and they described how hearing the radio broadcasts and sounds from the movie really took them back to some times they didn't want to remember. This COP, or Combat Outpost, is such a metaphor for our whole involvement in Afghanistan. A useless COP placed in the middle of a valley with no strategic advantage while soldiers risk life for ultimately nothing.

"The Taliban are coming!" "All at once or one at a time?"

If the Taliban really wanted to inflict some damage to the base, they should have hooked up a stereo system to the valley and played every Demo Reel video on repeat.

A minor nitpick, 'most people' nowadays tend to blame America for most of Afghanistan's problems with jihadist groups (they do have a greater share of blame for failing to provide stability in the region when they fucking occupied it for 20 years), but the major player in financing and providing weapons for Islamic extremist groups in Afghanistan was the Pakistan intelligence, not the CIA.

This movie is pretty good. It’s deff slept on. The way it was marketed makes it out to be a B grade cliche war flick, but it honestly surprised me. I only watched it cuz some vets I know recommended it.

Man, I watched this movie with my dad who also went to Afghanistan, I couldn't believe how piss poor everything was managed and when I asked my dad, he told me that Afghanistan was not handled with how the news told us. There are so many stories of this country from soldiers that might seem crazy, but this movie was a result of the craziness. The best way to describe Afghanistan at this point was your not in for a bad ride or a good ride, but it sure is going to be a ride.

Afghan war is the biggest exemple of the sunken cost fallacy. 20 years of war. By the end, there were soldiers younger than the war itself. Soldiers that had no idea of what they were doing following orders from people too proud to admit they didn't know either.

A single outpost, surrounded by three mountains/major hillsides, a shit road leading in, and no way to effectively get to those attacking locations from the outpost. Loli, if you like how this movie shows war, you might find Gallipoli very interesting. It isn't even a war movie,its more of an odyssey of exploring what WW1 was for a regular person from Australia. The first act especially is distinct from many war movies.

I had the amazing opportunity when I was in the Army to get to watch this movie in the McMahon building on Fort Carson. I was a part of 3-61 CAV and just so happened to be a medic in Bandit Troop Red Platoon. I wasn't at Keating but it was an amazing showing still. We got to ask questions of the director and Ty Carter.

Broward was based on Captain Porter in real life. In the movie Ty Carter addresses to LT Bundermann that the troops were starting to call him “Broward the coward. The real life nickname was “no mortar Porter”

So CPT Stoney Portis, the commander who took responsibility of the outpost at the end of the film, was actually my battalion commander. I knew him as LTC Portis lol. He didn’t talk much about it, but he did sign my book! In real life, his voice is less deep and he’s much shorter. Overall a stellar dude and an amazing commander, I was blessed to have served with him.

Afghanistan War films have proven to be quite well done. Lone Survivor (2013), 12 Strong (2018) and now The Outpost (2020). We are now getting two new ones this year alone with the upcoming Gerard Butler film Kandahar and The Covenant with Jake Gyllenhaal. I also recommend The Kite Runner (2007) & The Breadwinner (2017) for good stories on Afghanistan. Plus, films touching on the Soviet-Afghan War like Rambo 3 (1988), The Living Daylights (1987), and the vastly underrated The Beast (1988) have also become quite relevant again as a result of 2021.

Restrepo will forever remain imprinted in my head. That was the documentary that got me to sign up way back. Rip to all the 173rd bros.

My step father was apart of the 4th infantry division, and was supposed to be stationed in the valley, he had shot himself to get out of the army, mainly due to the fact he thought my mom was cheating on him, nevertheless a short month later the enital attack happened, SGT Knight took the place of my step father (SGT Olthoff) and the slow burning of events really shook him up, and really began to put him down the path of his split personality disorder. I lived on fort carson in colorado where the 4th infantry division is stationed, although I was very young, I ended up watching this movie with my mother about two years ago now, and I will never again, the amount of emotional connection my mother had to those people, and the way she pointed them out, was one of the most emotionally packed things I will ever experience, and to know I lived around these people for years was also something that hit me hard too. its one thing to see this from others, but I'll never forget the way my step fathers mental state deterinated in the next couple of years, leading my mom to divorce him, modern wars leave more people broken then dead, and it was really had to see.

The mere fact that they had a squad member who played himself accounted for some real factual shots of the firefight he witnessed first hand during deployment at camp Keating. It was the boldest re-enactment of what really went down that day. The actor who played Carter for me was outstanding, and given Carter was kept at arms length because his brothers and senior officers didn't trust him. The real Carter if depicted right proved to be both a mighty warrior and friend to the company. He deserved the M.O.H for the outstanding courage he displayed that day and the super human lengths he went to to get Mace to safety. I can fully appreciate how deeply it cut into him upon learning Mace didn't make it, as well as his brothers who fought to keep him alive. for that reason alone this is beyond doubt my favourate of all war movies, because it doesn't go off on a glorification tangent, They kept it true, and honoured those that fought and didn't make it.

I saw a netflix show called “medal of honour” and the show just shows certain medal of honour recipients and they try to recreate the certain events that occurred that got them their medal. And two episodes do show Clint Romesha and Ty Carter. The show has 8 episodes all from different wars each episode focusing on the individual. Sylvester Antolak running towards a German machine gun nest even after being shot I think two or three times, lost feeling in his right arm so he tucked his Thomson under his left armpit took out the nest, he also ran alone so his squad could also get up to the machine gun nest because they were getting ripped apart. Second is Clint Romesha at Keeting in Afghanistan. Third is Edward Carter who single handedly crippled a German stronghold in Germany. Hiroshi Miyamura who held off a wave of Chinese soldiers, ran out of ammunition for the two machine guns in his hole, used all his grenades then went berserk and charged into the Chinese wave that was charging him, he got into hand to hand and then American mortars started hitting because they thought he was dead and he ran behind enemy lines and was captured by the Chinese after being wounded from a grenade. Vito Bertoldo who haunted the german army in a town single handedly, german records show that there’s one guy holding a position which he held for a few days. Joseph Vittori who single handedly held a hill from the Chinese army, there were four machine gun nests and all were dead except for him and a wounded guy who couldn’t do anything really and he would run from one nest to the other holding the line. Richard Etchberger who exposed himself to enemy fire in order for his comrades to evacuate. Ty M. Carter also Keeting. The show is overall good because it talks about the past these guys had and endured to the moment of that event. I think mainly the reason why outpost was made was because two soldiers during the same battle and same day and time both received medal of honours which that doesn’t happen very often and I believe that’s the first that that has happened in United States history, I could be wrong but I’m Canadian, not Americano.

Nice review! Was hoping you'd mention the Latvian presence in the film- the guys who trained the Afghani soldiers at Keating that then fled. There's a funny moment in the movie where the Latvian instructor yells after them, asking why the Hell they're running away and not fighting for their country. Always stuck with me after watching this movie, because Latvian soldiers have a natural tendency to be extremely pissed about cowardice like that.

I watched this movie shortly after coming back from Afghanistan, and it felt like it took me back there for a couple hours. Some of it was really hard to watch, but I would say that just goes to show how authentic it is in its depiction.

Are you saying the events in Iraq and Afghanistan have almost the same parallel as another conflict in Eastern Europe where they’re claiming victory is a day away and no progress has been made while billions and billions of dollars are being sent to said eastern Europe country ?

More than likely it is not that Broward's real person did not want to be represented in the film, but more so the film producers, studio, etc did not wan to be sued on grounds of defamation. It happens often where characters based on real people that are poorly depicted in media will use a pseudoname. If the person is still alive they can sue for defamation, sometimes surviving members of that person can also sue on their dead relative's behalf.

HR McMaster has an outstanding book called Battlegrounds. He watched in real time as DC and the Pentagon went from utopian optimism about Afghanistan to fatalistic and its very clear that they just didn't know what they were doing.

This movie really got it right. Everything from how our starts to look after being in the field for a while to our mannerisms.

When you started talking about KZfaqrs that had an issue with the Afghan national guard, I immediately thought of Zack. That particular video of his had several really good stories about how lazy and inept they were. Why help people who won't help themselves.

the position of the outpost was tactically unsound because of the "ink dot" strategy that was implemented by General Petraeus. The idea was to set up accessible outposts. Not Tactically placed outposts. In other words, because it would have been too difficult for a local to make the trek up the mountains to order to air grievances to the American commander, the outpost was purposely placed where locals could travel to it easily. The strategy had some successes in Iraq, but it was a complete failure in Afghanistan. There is no reasoning with a barbarian.

I still find it Ironic how we were somewhat trying to help the Afghanistani and the Adghanistani said go F yourself. And we said ok and left and the Afghanistani F’ed themselves in the process. If Karma was a woman she would be the greatest 🐕 in Afghanistan. God Bless America 🫡
