It is depressing this movie did not make its money back in theaters. It’s such a good movie and especially if you watched it in theaters with bomb ass speakers the beginning alone makes the thing an experience.

It was foreseeable imo, these type of movies rarely make any money in the bo. For example do you remember the colossal bomb that was The 13th Warrior? The saddest thing is Robert Eggers will never get a similar financial backing ever again.

I watched The Northman in a completely empty theater. 4 PM showing, the movie didn’t do well in theaters, all that. So I sat in the best seat, right in the middle of the theater, and took it all in. And I think that was the first time I really understood classic Shakespearean tragedy. Amleth gets his revenge. Fjolnir and his entire family are dead. Amleth’s children will rule, his family will thrive…But was it worth it? I still don’t know the answer to that. Robert Eggers is an absolute fucking genius, and I so badly hope he puts out more fantastic films despite this one’s financial situation.

Idk man I didn't think it was a masterpiece as people say it was It was a solid 8/10 movie but by no means perfect, It would have been way better as a 8-10ep series tbh ,, Amleth went berserker on a village and then just randomly remembered and decided oh yeah I want revenge, and within 5 minutes is sold to the person he wants revenge on? I feel like it came too easily too him despite dying in the end ,, His mother and uncle should have had way more scenes too , she was the whole mastermind behind everything and the cause of all of amleths pain and we barely got any of her at all and she was played by Nicole Kidman ffs,, we coulda got so many great scenes 😅 I hope there is a director's cut that's an hour longer then the theatrical cut..
@andrew-rn9ui
@andrew-rn9ui Жыл бұрын
And the guy in the video is talking about how the journey feels worth it like what? We didn't even get any of amleths journey.. just a time skip to him going berserker on a village then he meets a seer and dips out to get revenge right away, and finds his love on the very boat that sells him to the very man he wanted revenge on? hardly a journey at all, infact barely an inconvenience

As someone who's studied Norse mythology and read the poetic edda, real Norse mythology (not the sanitized pop culture version) is weird, confusing, frustrating, and exists in a state of eternal dream logic which The Northman perfectly captures. Time, fate, and reality are all fluid concepts in Norse mythology. They can be maddening to try to comprehend but any man who finds himself in a Norse stories usually strives to embody the concept of a Drengr. A man of reckless courage who tolerates no insult, no matter how slight, and dies bloody with a sword in hand. Which is pretty much Amleth to a T.

I agree, that makes these movies a lot more interesting - it keeps you guessing. I also liked the scene where Amleth is hanged by his wrists to the ceiling, and you see the ravens rescue him, but later when he wakes up, he's with Olga, so it could have easily been just her cutting the ropes and taking him away to safety. You can have a lot of fun watching this movie.

The fact it didnțt get the success it deserves in theaters shows how down the gutter most people's tastes are. Also, Raid finally got to you !? I live in Mormon-vill Utah, and the relatively "smaller" theater (in a mall, mind you) I went to see The Northman, at 8 in the PM; what about 3/4ths full. This was a week after it came out. Having been a re-enactor of the Anglo Saxon and Viking age for nearly a decade now I have to say this film was absolutely incredible. The costuming alone was fucking phenomenal compared to the rest of Viking age media that's out there, me and my boys absolutely lost our shit when we saw the amount of beautifully woven and dyed fabrics compared to the usual dirty leather and random bits of fur that has no basis in reality. It also was the most authentic not only in visuals but in capturing the feel of the Viking Age, the worldbuilding, the clothes, how people spoke, the social norms and mentality of these people who exist over 1000 years ago was perfectly portrayed, it really represented the Norse slave trade in a particularly in-depth way that is really seen on the screen the Vikings were notorious slavers and we rarely see it.(as was the English, Scots, Russians and everyone else at that time but the Vikings would sell their slaves as far as Morocco and Italy it was a vast operation), there was a genuinely harrowing moment as we as modern day people who portray Viking raiders saw the sacking of the Slavic town as those were the people we represent when we wear out clothing and do shows, we often get so caught up in the fun of the fighting and drinking that we often forget that the Vikings were assholes but so was everyone else, it really hit us a lot more than most other people who saw this film. The roles of men and women were portrayed wonderfully too, the idea of magic being the domain of women was an integral belief in pagan Germanic cultures, it was awesome seeing the old male shaman in the mound noticeably wearing a hangeroc (basically a woollen apron worn over a dress by Viking women) and the very obvious tortiseshell brooches used to pin the hangeroc in place, tortiseshell brooches have only ever been found in female Germanic graves, meaning the old shaman was practising shamanistic transvestism and 'becoming' a woman in order to tap into women's natural connection with the magical world. Sorry if this was a bit ranty and autistic but this film was one of the best I've ever seen and had so many details only reenactors and Viking history buffs would've lost their shit over, my pee-pee also firmed when the ancient sword Amleth took from the old king was a direct copy of the 7th century Sutton Hoo Anglo Saxon sword, even down to the matching silver and gold decorations on the sword belt.

I saw this in theaters! What a refreshing experience that was to watch a modern film not only devoid of woke bullshit, but of such high quality! Really glad you covered this one. The review made me really curious about Robert Eggers' other films, and I have a question for anyone who might've seen them. Both seem amazing conceptually and I have no issue with the Lighthouse (gonna watch it tonight after work), but the Witch... Loli spoke highly of it and I tend to trust his opinion, but doing some research definitely has me concerned. I'm so jaded by this point that when I see things like "patriarchy," "sexuality," "religious extremism," women "yearning for independence," etc. I get spooked. Are these handled okay in the film or is it too woke to endure? Thanks guys.

Yeah, this movie was a rare treat these days. i was actually enjoying it enough that i didn't even try to think about where it was going so by the time Nicole Kidman's character started talking about how she planned the whole betrayal it was still quite a surprise. Looking back there was probably a 50\50 chance something like that was going to happen, but i was really just enjoying the ride so much that i wasn't trying to figure the movie out before it happened and i didn't notice that part with "Willem Dafoe slapping his sausage" hinting at the betrayal. Seeing movies like this bring me closer to the hope that maybe one day we might get an awesome Berserk movie, it shouldn't be attempted any time close to now because i still don't have faith that someone wouldn't fuck it up, it's just seeing something like this and The Green Knight makes me think the human action can be done but i still can't really think of a time when i saw something that made me think they could get the demons right and i'm all but certain the writing would be fucked if it got made today 😄👍

I agree with every major point you had. But then again, Robert Eggers is one of my favourite directors as well, haha. So far all of his movies have been phenomenal - a simple concept executed in a masterful way. His horror is also more complex than in a lot of other horror movies, less on-the-nose, more psychedelic. It's just a breath of fresh air in every regard. Also, you can't not respect the man, when you realize that from the comparatively tiny budget of The Witch he made such an accurate period-piece that a lot of high-budget movies fail to portray properly. I mean they made a single floor piece, which they re-used in certain shots, that was accurate down to the type of wood they would've used back then, but it would've cost way too much to make the whole floor out of it, hence the re-use. Dude's a legend.

This is 100% the kind of movie I always used to watch with my dad, he definitely would have loved it. I wish he could have seen it. I still have our copy of Predator on VHS that we watched at least once a month, and I Guarantee this would be in his DVD collection. I need to watch this again now that it's been a while.

When I watched some of Jackson Crawford's videos - he's a Norse scholar with an actual phd in this stuff - he mentions that in a lot of sagas, women are the instigators in this stuff. Nichole Kidman's character manipulating the events is very true to the source material.

Love this film! And I love Robert eggers works! Only had one showing left in town but sadly my partner got sick and I missed it but she promised to buy it on 4k when it came out on blu ray and boy did it deliver! It’s just a shame that it didn’t make back its box office as this film is Perfect! I only hope eggers can continue making these historical films

The Northman was a great movie. Talking about the folklore side of things actually reminded me of the films Tomm Moore directed. The hand-drawn animated movies; Wolfwalkers, Song of the Sea, and The Secret of Kells. If you like the addition of folklores in movies, and have a fondness for hand-drawn animation, I'd absolutely recommend those three films, they're all astounding in many aspects.

Not gonna lie, that raid sequence & it's aftermath fucked me up something fierce. Just the implication of the fates of these innocent slavic villagers was enough to unnerve me without seeing it directly.

Too many movies will have a long run time to be pretentious. Eggers never feels like he trying to waste your time, scenes build upon the other. Not saying he is a film god but I really enjoy his work.

I dont think it was obvious that myths are real, it is more likely that Characters believed that it is real. It is how they see the world. Especially in case of Amleth. It is clear, that in his childhood, everyone knew what is going to happen with his father, and why. It is how a good storyteller would tell a legend, to make it as interesting as he can. It was perfect.
