I feel like sometimes fans forget, this show is made for kids. The creators clearly take notice of the older fans (like with the ama the other day), but in the end they have to do what they think would appeal to kids, the show is on Disney after all. I think this might also be why they had King narrate the book in the beginning, in case kids didn't catch on to the underlying message of AOAW or just needed a refresher.

Theory: Belos is a human, who for one reason or another, got stuck on the Boiling Isles, and he’s spent the last 50 years trying to get home. He’s just using the Emperor status to protect himself from more powerful witches.

I think Luz *does* have an overarching character goal, but I personally frame it in terms of want vs. need. What she “wants” is simply to have magical adventure: a vague and indefinite goal, fitting for an emotionally immature adolescent who feels she doesn’t truly have a place in her own world. It makes sense for it to be a shallow motivation because it’s not what she truly “needs.” Her actual character arc is all about learning to form close interpersonal bonds-and she doesn’t need an adventure to do that. By the first few episodes, she’s already set down the foundation for strong relationships with Eda, King, and her first two real friends. Amity is kind of the “starter antagonist” to that goal, whom eventually Luz won to her side through genuine self-reflection, kindness, and attempts to make things right. And from that, we can extrapolate that people like Lilith and the Blight parents will be the actual “final bosses” of her arc, not Belos. How she deals with them will be in part determined by her own interpersonal growth throughout the next season.

I think either Luz can control the glyphs or she can modify them to do different things. In Adventures in the Elements, she doesn't perfectly copy the ice glyph.

While they didn't focus on it all the time, I felt like the biggest element of Luz's arc was seeing past her expectations to the hard work and discipline needed to make her fantasies come true. It was the lesson she learned in the second episode, she emphasized it after her duel with Amity to form an understanding, Willow threw it in her face during grudgby practice, it's an ongoing thread that Luz has to deal with as part of growing up. They break away from it for character-centric episodes and world building, but that feels like the throughline to me.

Never forget, Gravity Falls took up until the second to last episode of season 1 to show Bill Cypher. I'm interested in seeing what comes from Season 2.

I'm gonna say it: Belos gives me Horde Prime vibes. There I said it.

In the episode "understanding willow," she just draws the circle with nothing inside it. So her intent must do something, plus the light spell she used in the dungeon popped out of existence when she moved her hand. It only existing for along as she wants it suggests she can control it even after it was cast. In fact, we see her use a light spell differently the second time she ever drew a glyph. She uses a gigantic light spell against owl Eda, unlike every other light spell she draws, this was a huge flash rather than the usual ball of light.

I really enjoy the theory that Belos is an undead human like a lich.

Theory: luz's spell glyphs are somewhat tied to her emotions, that's why she was so much more powerful in this episode.

I agree about the plot it annoyed me when people were getting mad at lumity shippers and were all "focus on the plot" when their was no plot for a while mostly just hints of a larger world and eda being hunted by her sister that was mostly a joke and wasn't taken very seriously. Hopefully the show does a better job mixing the romance and lore elements because I feel like the writers were keeping them separate on purpose

I think the reason Luz’s glyphs are being used differently has to do with her connection to the islands magic. When she first started she didn’t know how to control it well, and could only use the base form of the spell. But as her connection to magic and her skill gets stronger, she’s begun to control it at will, and change how the spells function whenever she needs to

Reflecting back on it, it's actually genius how they lured us in with the lighthearted wish fulfillment on Luz's part, with her taking for granted the convenient portal home so much she was literally sneaking back to loot her closet (unless Eda just happened to have an otter costume, both equally likely actually) and mooch off her mom's wifi. Start innocent, then slam us with the hard stuff. Star Vs. also comes to mind the episode that Toffee showed up.

Truly, I hope we see more of Hooty's potential. That crouching moron hidden badass is a very mysterious one. For a show titled The Owl House, we barely know anything about the house itself.

I have a feeling it will have a Sabrina the teenage witch vibe. Eda will still have a mother role with Luz. But Lilith will have a aunt role. Because she has messed up she trys way to hard to make things up to everyone. That Lilith also trys to train Luz. I think the Emperor is a Avatar that body is just something he is possessing. That he is a titan. That he is trying to get back to the world of the titans or whatever killed the titans.

I'm assuming Belos is some kind of Bizarro Wizard of Oz, personally. Also, it's been said in the show that witches have magic because of bile from their heart. Hence Belos having the titan's heart there above his throne and him freebasing the juice from the staff at the start of the episode. Nothing wrong with a simple twist, imo. I mean, yeah, him being human wont be a 'twist' to the audience everyone expects it, but to the people of the isle it has ramifications.

If Eda used the pain split spell on Luz, Luz would also have part of the curse. It also might have been worse since Luz doesn't have her own magic to resist it.

I think the thing about amphibia being all set up and having a curse and Owl house don't, is because Amphibia now isn't in season 1 anymore , they already have set up the place and their main character. And owl house were doing this yet. I think if the were to compare owl house and Amphibia would be season one vs season one . But then again maybe it was a mistake for disney to put them in the exacly same day because it give us the impression that they are in the same page and there aren't.

My theory: the emperor is a human that was obsessed with finding the boiling isles and a way to do magic. The only thing that held him back was when he fell in love with a witch that told him to stop looking for the boiling isles. He eventually did find the boiling isles only to realize that it was a one-way ticket. He took over using his wits to create a technology that uses harvested magic to do an anti-magic that cant be influenced by real magic. Once he heard of a human arriving he knew there must be a portal back to the human world. He now wants to use the portal to create a gateway to multiple dimensions other than the human world. He is going to go back to the human world to find his wife and she is going to reject his offer to rule the multi-verse with him so he kidnaps her anyways. It is revealed that he had to use Palisman magic to keep himself alive turning him into a zombie-like creature. It is also revealed that the love of his life was luz's mom who was one of the ancient witches that used glyph magic. This means the emperor is luz's dad, which even he did not know at first. Word is going to get out about the fact that Belos' plan will put the lives of everyone on the isles at stake. Luz will lead an army if the residents on the boiling isles to defeat Belos and save her mother.

I feel that a lot of shows nowadays have the same problem owlhouse does where they go through the set up and the worldbuilding before introducing plot when in reality those two should be presented simultaneously to the audience. Take avatar the last airbender for instance, they started in the first episode with a little worldbuilding but when aang was introduced they gave us the characters the plot and continued to build on the world. Almost seamlessly.

Theory: Belos is a human and intended to be a foil to Luz. Like Luz he WANTS magic and wonder. But while a part of him wants to go back to the Human World he can't let go of the magic, he doesn't have an attachment to the Boiling Isles beyond that. No friends, no loved ones, no family, not like Luz. For him it's all about the magic, the power fantasy, the WISH FULFILLMENT. The Day of Unity is about Uniting the Boiling Isles and Human World, so he can work his technomagic there too.

Thank you I felt like I was a crazy person watching Amphibia and Owl House at the same time and going "Amphibia is much more solidly developed and executed than Owl House...." like I was being unfair or something, most of the production focus seemed to lean on the art and visuals rather than developing a strong world and characters, which makes the show feel a rather hollow and manufactured to me, but it could just be growing pains! I'm happy to give a show room to grow, but I also feel like Amphibia isn't talked about as much as it should be for the caliber of show it is! Sometimes it reminds me of Classic Simpsons in terms of joke-a-minute writing in combination with sincerely felt characterization or message, and I can't help but admire them for pulling it off successfully, I feel like I've been waiting my whole life for another show like that. Other shows have come close, but not as close as Amphibia.

"My biggest complaint with Owl House that has finally been fixed: what is Owl House about?" I had the exact same thought after watching this episode. The aimlessness was something that seriously bugged me and prevented me from fully enjoying even the better episodes. Though it kinda wraps back around into it feeling more like a midseason finale than anything else. What happened in this episode was certainly a major narrative turn worthy to end the season, and the whole thing with Eda's curse would have hit less hard if this was episode nine or something, but the way in which the show lacked such strong focus before means that it feels oddly late for that solid foundation to just now be coming in.

Emperor Belos is most likely going to turn out to be a human. But I don't think that's a bad thing. We don't know what his end game goals are, we don't know what his life was like before he rose to power. There's a lot of ways that they can still surprise us with. And your main problem with most of the first season was "directionless" wasn't that big of an issue for me, who binged most of it in a couple sittings. Much of this first season was very "Slice of Life", which can be cool. But it's not like Luz never had a goal in mind. She stayed in this world to learn magic to become a witch. Yeah, she got sidetracked a lot due to the slice of life elements, as well as just having a shitty teacher (Eda is a good mother figure and character on the whole, but was worthless in teaching Luz magic, fite me). My main hope for next season is for them to reorganize their main cast. Season 1, only Luz, Eda, and King were series regulars, with everyone else being reoccurring. We really need Amity, Willow, Gus, and maybe Lilith be promoted to series regulars. And while I enjoyed the slice of life elements of season 1, Im hoping for the overarching story to be more prominent in season 2, with slice of life episode sprinkled in here and there. I want to see Luz and Eda learn more magic together, with maybe Eda being more productive on this front now that she's on the same level as Luz. I want to see more Amity for both shipping reasons and for more of her family to be explored. I have theories that her parents have ties to the Emperor's Coven, but we'll have to see. I'd like to see more prominent villains from the Emperor's Coven, now that the top dog Lilith has cut ties. I know that there is that one short girl who I can't remember the name of, but I'd like to see more.

Luz changes the glyphs a little bit when she uses the spells, you can see this when she makes the light sign of eda. When luz does this she actually alters the main glyph a little bit.

Actually, if you look at the runes, some of them are slightly different than that of the original rune, so it makes the spell different. It's most noticeable when she first does the ice spell.

I think for the glyphs, it depends on her mood, she typically happy when she makes ice platforms, and ice spears when she's mad

For some reason, I feel like humans were natural to the boiling isles, at one point. Like in most fantasy - while humans CAN use magic - they are typically not as naturally inclined as their elf/beast counterparts. (like in Skyrim where it feels more worth it when you have your pockets lined with gold to just buy scrolls instead of advancing certain spell paths and re-focusing on more versatile concepts like lockpicking, blocking, sneaking, etc...) I feel like humans are more like Dwarves in fantasy, which are associated more with technology and reclusive civilizations. I feel like humans, however, weren't as common. From as far as we know in the unauthorized history book, you can actually zoom in and read the text. The text mentions that there must have been other titans cause you can find random, assorted titan parts, outside of the main titan body; though a full-second body has yet to be found, or so the people of the Boiling Isles believe. There are lots of themes of Colonialism, in this show. The destruction of 'wild witches,' religious symbolism, and even separation of class. (demon folk, while having similar intelligence to Elves, might be seen as less-than but that's mostly just going off of a few jokes in the show and is very much a stretch.) I feel like Belos either did something to past human civilizations - he already re-wrote history to his tastes so it is possible, though a very large stretch to get to that conclusion - or he took a Pilgrimage after war or desperation for more space for the ever-growing human population. He came across the body of the titan and was amazed by its size, and more importantly, the power still within the fallen demon. And thusly, using technology that is used to take energy from the environment - he began his reign to take over. Being greedy, he remained and never returned to where he once dwelled. There is a problem, however. His tech became insignificant, over time. So why does he want to go to the human world? To take their technology and use it to expand his empire/keep his position and possibly find a way to harness power from the titan to give him more eternal youth. He IS definitely over 50, after all. TL;DR: Colonizing bastard want more tech and power. He steal tech from a more advanced civilization of people. He get more power and maybe also some Titan-enduced botox.

I'm excited for the the next season but now I kinda want a sarcastic summary of MHA. Just to get more of your thoughts on the series. I've got to say that while I kinda get what you're saying with the "starter friends" thing I can't fully agree with it.

I'm kinda disappointed with this last episode. The original episode was seemed like it was setting up a "Found family" message and how sometimes your real family isnt your "family" because they hurt you. But nope apparently Lilth never actually meant to hurt Eda and it was all a big misunderstanding. And now Lilth has been quickly redeemed and is a good guy now. I dunno it might just me.

Season 1 felt like it was Luz's origin story. It was her bumbling around looking for purpose. They also had to throw exodia over the boat in Eda loosing her magic. This was a high paced show because when they made it they didn't know there would be a season 2 so they had to work hard to hit as many of the points they knew would get them attention. Willow was hurt by this for sure. She is a great character and Dana herself for sure has stuff for season 2. She has promised more characters in season 2. More adult characters and family drama in season 2. And there have been hints that both Willow, Bosha and the twins will have more character development. The bit that scares me is that nothing has yet been mentioned for Gus.... So we shall see.

My thoughts are that Emperor Belos wants to use the portal to merge both the human and magic world together so that they could finally "be one with the titan" or some cultist shit like that. Day of "Unity" and all that. I don't believe that Belos is actually human cuz that's too easy and I instead think that he's a normal witch hellbent on being the most powerful and using people's belief in the titan to his advantage. He definitely found a way to use machines to exploit the titan's power. Side note: I think the kids in the background at 3:19 might be Amity's parents or at least the girl is. They have the same face and hair.

the eda character type needs to be more common

If you look closely, a lot of the glyphs that Luz uses are altered in some way, even the first ice spell she did isn't identical to the origional glyph. This can probably explain some of the different things the glyphs may do.

I agree with what you said about the first season not really feeling like it had a clear and serious direction. And I think the show could only take a more serious direction once Luz realized that this wasn't going to be like the fantasy stories she grew up with. Luz had to learn that she is not a "chosen one" and that she is going to have to work much harder than others to become a witch. I think that is the main drive of s1. Luz learning that this world is not as predictable as she first thought and that even though she is the protagonist things won't be handed to her. It's because of her determination to learn magic even though she is not naturally gifted leads her to discover the glifs. This makes s1 feel a lot more grounded which I love. It's when Luz starts to take this more seriously that the show is able to take its more serious and dark path in the S1 finale with the Emperor and whatever his plan is.

personally I loved the stress-free adventures of season one. I loved that we could go 'round exploring the world and getting to know the characters a bit more. I think it works because we see everywhere in the background several ongoing problems that are eventually going to be a big deal, but for me at least I was enticed by the story enough to keep coming back. Having Luz being aware of common tropes of a story like hers and the show subverting them is an example of a unique aspect of TOH that kept me watching it while it was episodic. Idk, maybe it's just because I'm a Steven Universe veteran and like that slow rise from an episodic to serial show, maybe it's a breath of fresh air from shows like Adventure Time where you didn't know that the show was heading somewhere. But I, surprisingly, really loved TOH season one.

Magic in the boiling isles: From what we've seen Witches have a physical organ that stores magical energy. Witches can use this power to cast spells by drawing circles with their hands, and focusing their mind on the desired effect. For witches the magic is stored in them, so if they run low, they run low. This means in the human realm they have some magic, but it also means they can run out even in the boiling isles. For Luz magic is different. While she was told about the "bigger circle for more powerful spell" and we do see her use this in the episode it was revealed in, I don't think this rule holds true for Luz. The reason is that Luz doesn't have a physical organ she is drawing the magic from, she isn't doing hand gestures to make spells. She is drawing glyphs which directly tap into the elements of the world, almost like she's hacking the system rather than casting a spell. The spell's effect is based on her thoughts when she activates it, which means she can draw a very small glyph and produce a great effect. The glyphs are the elements she calls on rather than some specific effect, although it would be interesting to go further than a basic 5-7 elements and have some type of god or other power source she can tap into with more intricate glyphs. Some side effects of her magic being done this way are also that her magic does not work in the human realm, but also within the boiling isles her magic is limitless (or at least, limited only by her environment, not by her as a character.) I feel this is why she was able to cast so many strong spells in the finale. Her intent was to cast stronger spells, and the elemental energy in the world responded. (I'm really curious what Eda is going to be able to do with all this since she has dedicated herself to understanding wild magic already, and can probably fathom much more intricate / potent effects than Luz could.) However this comes back to Emperor Belos who I feel is doing something very similar to Luz. The difference is that Luz is hacking the isle's magic through glyphs to connect to the elements where the Emperor has uses his technology to connect to the heart of the titan. I suspect he is a construction coven witch who's prowess at construction magic has spawned the technology he uses. This is present early in the castle where you see the bridge is extended and retracted via a series of gears, and throughout the throne room where constructed pipes connect to the Titan's heart and other areas in the castle. His staff is the biggest tell that he uses tech to capture magic, and it could be used to explain him as a human trapped in this world like Luz, but I hope the reveal is more that he simply understood that construction magic could control the Titan's power. Also - about healing magic - The show seems consistent that healing magic is not an instant heal. We see this with Amity's broken leg. This is important for a few reasons, but first I just wanna say that gives more reasoning for the scene where Lilith heals Eda by sharing the skinned knee. It also helps build up Eda's curse as possibly incurable giving us larger stakes for future story arcs. Its also good because healing magic that whisks away the consequences of injury, failure, and defeat and really be drama-killers as the consequences of these are the sole reasons these actions are bad. Going back to SU on this one - Steven's healing power removed any consequence of any injury in the show, likewise when he fixed the shattered Jasper in future (and when Yellow is just casually fixing shattered gems) this means there is no reason to have a stigma about being a "shatterer." This is one of the biggest failures of SU for me is that the instant, all powerful healing magic and eventually readily available resurrection simply kill off any stakes you have in the character's as being "good" or "evil" since anyone could now shatter a thousand gems and just heal them back up. I like that TOH is going the route of magic as a slow burn effect. It probably helps reduce pain and speed recovery, but it does not remove the consequences.
