Ironically enough, many a lifelong friendship started (and still does)after a dust-up like that. When you're at war, life "compresses" so much. everything that's "Normal" gets turned on its ear, and things like friendships have to move faster too because life is so precarious.

Not only was John Basilone a boxer, but so was the dude who played him. The actor of John Basilone was a Golden Gloves Champion. Also most of the soldiers back at home that were told to keep the peace were mostly combat veterans so chances are that this guy was either in Burma or North Africa. While there's always some bad apples, I have to say I never felt more welcome than I did in Australia during my time in service. I was of course respectful, stuck to myself, and didn't cause any trouble for them. The Aussies are great people, rough around the edges, tough and resilient, very likeable as long as you don't bullshit them. I spent many nights downing beers in local taverns, partying with the Australians. We even had a few fist fights, but it was all in good fun, just to test our mettle against one another and we always had beers afterwards. Fantastic memories in Australia. Much love from the USA.

the Pacific didn't go into more context about why Americans were hated basically America didn't do anything for Australia the Aussies had asked them for oil weapons men or money and America refused to offer any aid (pre pearl harbor) even when Australia was on the verge of invasion however the Australians worked miracles and fended off the Japanese and then started pushing them back to Tokyo America then entered the war and the exhausted Australians handed over the rush to Tokyo to America when Americans started arriving to Australia they seemed ignorant/oblivious to how hard the Australians had actually been fighting and made the incorrect assumption that by some how just arriving to Australia they had some how saved Australia this was an asinine assumption and caused many fights including the battle of flinders street (giant brawl) where several Marines were killed also there was a serial killer/rapist Marine that the Marines just sent back to America rather than trial him for murder and rape

It's just a TV show, children, so neither side of the argument should get too carried away with misplaced patriotic fervour. We all should remember that the so-called battle of Brisbane started from an argument on a street between two Aussie soldiers and an American soldier and would probably have come to nothing if it wasn't for the interference of an American MP, who began to mistreat the American bloke. The two Aussies immediately bought into the blue in support of the very bloke they had been arguing with and...well...things went down hill from there. Big news way back then - a minor footnote in history now.

The Marines also were in Melbourne. On the US side the "battle" of Brisbane primarily involved US Army troops. While I don't doubt that there were also some incidents in & around Melbourne - thousands of young men and copious amounts of alcohol are usually a volatile mix - there was nothing quite on the scale and overall relations were more cordial. The men of the 1st Marine Division actually sent more mail to Australia than to the United States following their stint there between battles.

The British were using Australian troops in North Africa in 1941, before Pearl Harbor. The Australians wanted to call their own troops home to defend the Southwest Pacific, but the British prevailed on the US to cover for them. The Australians didn't like the arrangement and felt that they were treated as a second class partner by both the UK and US. The Australians were stuck in horrible jungle fighting in New Guinea as well.

@badweather92 You're mostly right. The Australians were definitely big in defending and then recapturing New Guinea. Australia did not stop the Japanese alone. Air power was the biggest key to victory. I don't care how big & bad someone is, if you didn't control the air, you're going to lose. That air power came from the US. I'm not sure what your point is with Rabaul, the Australians lost it & it was never recaptured. American air reduced it to insignificance. I respect what Australia did.

Well, apparently, he hung out with a few marines and some Air Force NCO tried to pick a fight with them and ended up getting his ass beat. He hadn't been deployed, but decided to pick a fight with a bunch of guys coming back from deployment. Moral of the story, don't pick a fight with a guys that have been to war.

@Anders2185 "the situation was grave but no way were we anywhere near being defeated." Kabuto might be referring to North Africa. Rommel did push the British back to El Alamein, near Alexandria. If he had succeeded the British position would have been very bad. It was American equipment that helped win that campaign. This British relied heavily on Grant and then Sherman tanks to turn the tide. The British Matilda tank was no match for the Germans. Tanks weren't the only items either.
