You won't regret the kayak paddle in tides for sure. I use an otter tail a lot of the time with my other canoe, (Prospector) but I find it less efficient and therefore relegated to leisure paddles on calm water. I use a Bending Branches Sunburst Large to push more water most of the time in that canoe.

I haven't poled, only because I don't see the usefulness of making and carrying a pole when I'm mostly paddling deeper water during the same trip. And yes, the solo canoe is pretty tippy. I stand occasionally in my wood canoe for wildlife viewing.

The drip rings don't help, I just deal with it. In the shoulder seasons, I wear dry pants or I use a single blade. In the summer, I just get wet.

I like to be able to move about and standing gives a break from sitting or kneeling, and the view is different. I also have a long stand up paddle. I'm in hopes rowing will be more efficient than a double blade. Still have the arms/oar locks to contend with. Nice to know about the drip rings, I find the excess water unbearable.

I use "neverwet" on my kayak paddle blades and the water runs off b4 u raise it high enough to drip on you...drip rings do not seem to help!

I choose one over a kayak, although I love a kayak too, the reason being, in my canoe I can stand up and stretch, take a leak if need be, my body movement is not limited by being encapsulated and confined, I don't know how to do an eskimo roll either so I wont die in the canoe if things get ugly, I can bail out and hold onto it, in the kayak if you are a master at it you can survive anything if you know how to roll, even in the ocean. The canoe is like a deck you get to sit on and socialize with a guest, or solo talking to yourself, I love being able to stand up in a conoe, they make racing canoes that look like kayaks but I would rather an open face, I love canoes, mine is a beast and I love it so much but I for certain hope that someday I can own a light one like this mans. The kayak is faster, unless you have a race canoe, which will cost you your home lol
