Happy Easter! Bit of a different Fleet video today :) Thought I'd take a look at Pan Am on the channel as I know that a lot of you are very interested in the airline, despite it being bankrupt! If you'd like me to take a look at more bankrupt airlines fleets do let me know :) P.S - A brand new animated outro with your favourite Fly Away jingle has been completed :) It'll roll out sometime this coming week!

So Pan Am had more DC-8's than B707s! Amazing, would have though the other way around. Of course the Beatles first flight to the U.S. was on a Pan Am B707 Clipper Defiance, iconic image of them coming down the air stairs at JFK.
@hmpstd5 жыл бұрын
Actually, Pan Am's historic fleet included 127 total Boeing 707 variants, including 8 of the 707-120 (which DJ referenced in his video), 85 of the 707-320B, and. 34 of the 707-320C. While they originally ordered 25 DC-8 jets from Douglas, they only took delivery of 20 in the end. While DJ notes its association with the 747, it was really the 707 that marked Pan Am as the preeminent international airline of the jet age.

When I was 7, I got to go on the cockpit of a Pan-Am 707 during a stopover in Brasilia on a Miami to Rio flight. That sealed my love of aviation forever! Flew solo from London to Seattle on this lovely bird when i was only 9 years old. Pan Am's flight attendants slapped an "i fly solo" sticker on my chest, upgraded me to first class to keep track of me and just like in the movie Airplane, sat with the pilots and navigator in the cockpit over Greenland. An experience 40 years ago that sparked my passion for commercial aviation.

A man in California built a replica of a Pan Am 747 cabin. It has nearly everything you can think of, including beverage carts, the lavatory, food plates, etc. He occasionally hosts public parties there for $300 per person, which is essentially a pretend flight with food, and people acting as flight attendants.

Internet is a wonderful thing. Looking at the pictures of some old timetables PAn Am actually did fly 737 and 727 on short haul routes in Europe in 1980s. The flight orientated in Ankara on Turkish airline and then we were on PAN AM from Istanbul to US.
@pauldunn59785 жыл бұрын
@@Peizxcv PAN AM had 727s based in Europe for several years. So did, I believe , TWA and even Delta for a while. I think Pan Am had 6 over here. I flew LHR-FRA in 1990 on one. PAN AM overbooked on return leg and palmed me off onto an Ethiopian Airlines 767 flight back from FRA-LHR.

@fafnorcal5 жыл бұрын
Well done DJ -- especially since this airline ceased to exist before you arrived! Pan Am actually had a rival for the crown of "U.S. Flag Carrier" and that was Howard Hughes' TWA. UA and AA, as the lineal descendants of Pan Am and TWA respectively, have landing rights at LHR. For a long time, they were the only US flag carriers with LHR rights. Pan Am did not fall apart overnight but slowly sold off assets as they tried to stay afloat in the unfamiliar world of airline deregulation. Pan Am sold its trans-Pacific routes and NRT hub to UA in the 1980s. I recall stories at the time about UA over-running its budget by 100% as it refurbished acquired PA aircraft; things like entire passenger floors in their 747s needing replacement rather than just carpet. The 747SP was the equivalent of Qantas' project sunrise of its day. It enabled the then unheard of: non-stop flights from the U.S. west coast to Sydney. I did once fly on one of the former PA 747SPs but only after it was in UA livery. When Airbus was a start-up, they managed to break into the U.S. market circa 1976 or 77 by giving cash-strapped Eastern Airlines use of six A300s for six months at no cost and to be taken back by Airbus after six months if Eastern was not satisfied. Eastern kept the airplanes and wrote a check. I don't know of PanAm received the same offer from Airbus. Lastly, PanAm was historically a gateway carrier with operations at major airports on the coasts (e.g. BOS, JFK, IAD, MIA, LAX, SFO, SEA). It depended on domestic feeders. This worked before airline deregulation but left them very vulnerable afterwards. Those 727s you mention were acquired largely to support intra-Europe service, feeding their operations at LHR for instance, and as they acquired a US domestic airline (National), trying to develop their own feeders. In their final days, they did just the opposite of service to the world, operating hourly shuttle service LGA to DCA and LGA to BOS.

My first ever trip to America was on Pan Am in September 1988 and flew back on the same airframe 3 weeks later. It was Clipper Maiden of the Seas which was of course the aircraft destroyed over Lockerbie just 9 weeks after I flew back from MIA to LHR on it. Made my blood run cold. In November '91 on my second trip to the US, I flew on a Pan Am 727 from TPA to MIA. On the flight two of the flight attendants, both in their 50s, were crying a bit in the back. I had to ask them what was wrong and they said "We may aswell tell you, I don't think Pan Am will survive past Christmas. This crew has a combined service of over 100 years with Pan Am." Sure enough, they ceased ops 7 days later.

Enjoyable video DJ. I used to fly on Pan American frequently and I have missed them terribly. They literally brought commercial aviation into the jet age. They are the reason why nautical terms are used describing places on aircraft (galley, etc.), the reason why pilots wear nautical-inspired uniforms and so much more. No only did they fly the aircraft types you described but they co-developed many of them with the manufacturers. There would be no 747 without Pan Am. The 707 and DC8 might have been developed on their own but this would have been years later if not for Pan Am’s insistence and substantial orders for both types. Finally, Airbus owes Pan Am a great deal as they needed a well known, well respected customer for their new aircraft (the A300) and they got that when Pan Am placed their order. It put Airbus on the map so to speak.

I have fond memories of Pan Am. My one and only flight on a 747 was a Pan Am 747 in 1986 flying from Miami to JFK. I was a kid at the time, and it was the first time I ever got to see the inside of an aircraft cockpit and I got to fly in the upper deck of the 747. In comparison to existing airlines, they would be something like an American version of Emirates, they were a premium airline with some of the best amenities you could get in that era, they also flew the 747 as something of a point of pride like Emirates does with the A380.

The 707 was far more important milestone to Pan Am than then 747. The 747 was simply a bigger 707. The 707 introduced 6 hour trans atlantic routes instead f the overnight 18 hour propellor flights (such as Boeing Stratocruiser) and opened up longer routes as being possible as a single day flight instead of multiple days. The 747 allowed Pan Am to fit the 707's first class in the front and tcreate a new concept "coach class" in the back to make flying more affordable. The advent of the 707 (and DC-8) relegated the "Kangoroo Route" to just a designation whereas prior to it, it was truly hopping up and down from Australia to England. BTW, the Miami based Pan Am was not the same corporation. It was a different airline that bought naming rights after Pan Am's bankruptcy, so their fleet is not related to the real Pan Am fleet. BTW, it is L ten eleven, not L one zero one one. The L1011 and DC-10 competed against the 747 at first. But eventually the 747 grew and Boeing was stuck with a big gap between the 767 and 747, so it created the 777 (9 across seating) to cater to airlines replacing their aging L1011s, DC-10 and MD11.

The classic was the 707-320B which had the turbojets replaced with JT3D turbofans and extended wings. It flew in 1962 only a few years after the Dash 80 and 720s. This really was the aircraft that opened up the world. There really have been zero improvements in air travel since then in safety, comfort or speed. Only a little improvement in range. In economy class we had 38 inch pitch seat (34, 32 or even 30 in economy now) have to pay premium economy to get that now. We flew higher and faster than the current jets. If they put current generation engines on the 707 the aircraft would be competitive.

I noticed that you spent a lot of time on Airbus but skimmed over the Douglas fleet. Also, you should rename your vid... jet fleet as Pan Am had more airplanes than the ones you covered....the classic propliners and seaplanes!

Thanks for reviewing such an iconic airline. It would have been nice to have gone more in depth of each model, accommodation, range and routes. You briefly mention the DC-10 and completely forgot the DC-8. You never said anything about why it ceased operations either.

Yes, I'm quite interested in the topic of bankrupted airlines, esp. the reasons why. Maybe you can feature Eastern Airlines or TWA in one of your next videos.

I would suggest doing BOAC or BEA. Would love to see a British Airline that no longer flies!
