"Kill me before the war is over, will you? It appears that you are not the better man." "You're right. My sons were better men." Fun Fact: Heath Ledger didn't work for a year because he only got offers for teen heartthrob roles. He was about to quit acting, and return to Australia, when he was cast in the film. Location Location Fact: Aunt Charlotte's (Joely Richardson) house is the same one used in Forrest Gump (1994), with slightly different interior paneling. The stone hedge visible in Forrest Gump (1994) is camouflaged with bushes in this film. Marksman Technique Fact: When teaching Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger how to shoot a muzzle-loading rifle, technical advisor Mark Baker gave them the "aim small, miss small" advice, meaning that if you aim at a man and miss, you miss the man, while if you aim at a button (for instance) and miss, you still hit the man. Gibson liked this bit of advice so much, he incorporated it into the movie, just prior to the ambush scene. Historical Fact: The historical accuracy of the costumes and settings was overseen by the Smithsonian Institution. It's the first time the Institution ever worked directly on the production of a movie. In addition to Francis Marion, a.k.a. The Swamp Fox, Mel Gibson's character is also based on the life of South Carolina militia leader General Andrew Pickens. Pickens had his estate torched, and lost a son, before he went back into action and led the militia forces at Cowpens.

Heath Ledger (Gabriel) is one of two people to win a posthumous acting Oscar (Supporting Actor for 2008's "The Dark Knight," where he played The Joker). Interestingly, both were Australian - Peter Finch was the other one (Leading Actor for "Network" in 1976).

There are a few Mel Gibson movies, that are ABSOLUTE MUST SEES, for example "MAD MAX 2 . THE ROAD WARRIOR", "LETHAL WEAPON" (one of the best action movies ever with three equally good sequels!) and the story of legendary Scottish hero William Wallace - "BRAVEHEART"! John Williams is a legendary composer, who (among lots of other soundtracks) composed the music for all the important movies of Steven Soielberg and George Lucas: "JAWS", "E.T.", "RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK", "JURASSIC PARK", "STAR WARS", "SCHINDLER'S LIST" and many, many more!

The reason they fought in formations like that during those times was because it was the only way for them to maintain command and control of large armies. The invention of the musket made it possible to pull someone off the street and make them an effective soldier with minimal training. This allowed armies to easily grow their forces to sizes never seen before, but created another problem: massive forces like that would quickly descend into chaos if not strictly controlled. So they set them up in formations and used drums and flags to send commands. Believe it or not, even with how slow and lumbering this seems, these types of forces were the height of military prowess at the time and would absolutely decimate smaller forces. Only the invention of modern electronic communications were we able to control large forces without having to resort to these tactics.

Mel Gibson movies that most people don't even know about that are good: * "Mrs. Soffel" (with Diane Keaton) * "The Year Of Living Dangerously " (with Sigourney Weaver) * "The Bounty" (with Anthony Hopkins and Liam Neeson) * "Gallipoli"
@jessiemeisenheimer8675

If you're interested this is why armies of this time period fought like that. 1. Command and control. There are no radios. Orders have to be issued via shouting, flags, drums and other instruments. Troops had to be formed up so close together to actually see and hear their orders. 2. The weaponry. Muskets are inaccurate and slow to reload. Trying to hit anything past about 80 metres was extremely difficult. By having the men lined up together like that it maximized the chances of hitting a target. A literal wall of lead. When the first line of men fired they usually stepped to the side (or kneeled) to allow the second to fire, while the third rank (line) of men handed the ranks in front of them loaded muskets to fire, and in turn would recieve fired muskets to reload, and so the process would repeat. This worked around the low rate of fire of the weapons themselves, allowing for a constant volume of fire. 3. Defense against cavalry. Individual infantryman are easy targets for horsemen. When formed up together they can fire concentrated volleys at cavalry. If the cavalry attempted to flank the formation then the infantry would form a square with bayonets fixed. The men fire in all directions and horses will not charge directly into a wall of bayonets. Only the most aggressive horses and suicidal riders would charge down infantry squares. And to clear up a few myths. The British did use specialists whose job was to specifically target officers and spread out and use cover. The light infantry/skirmishers. Skirmishers were issued rifles and not smoothbore muskets. The rifles were more accurate and had a longer range but were more prone to misfires and were more expensive to build and maintain. Skirimishers were usually elite troops so rifles were few in number until the mid 1800s. Back to the main point, the idea of the Americans being the first to use this type of warfare is a propaganda myth, as is the idea of it being a gentleman's way of fighting.

One of so many times that things in a movie would have gone so much better if, when the villain was down, the heroes had simply followed the rules of Zombieland. Specifically, double tap. I see some similarities between this movie and the Gladiator. • They're commanders. • Their son was murdered. • Both have a face-to-face with their son's killer where they proclaim a vow of vengeance. • Both end up killing their son's killer by stabbing them in the throat with a dagger type weapon. • Both lead actors are Australian. • Both movies released the same year. The Patriot was released about 3 months before the Gladiator.

Also watch Braveheart, Ransom, Signs, and maybe the animated movie Chicken Run. His eldest son in this movie was played by Heath Ledger, another fantastic actor who is gone too soon. Mel Gibson's career was made by the "Mad Max" and "Lethal Weapon" series. These made him part of an elite group of "80's action heroes" that also included Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis and Harrison Ford. Another important movie that he co-starred in early in his career was "Gallipoli". As he got older, he and his movies became more controversial, culminating in "The Passion of the Christ" which he directed.

The final battle in the movie was based on the historical Battle of Cowpens. General Cornwallis was not involved, but the villain in this film was based on Bannistre “The Butcher” Tarleton. He was a British military commander who was known for his extremely brutal military tactics, as he allowed the loyalist Scotch-Irish militias under his command to use positively terrible terrorist tactics to intimidate locals. He was baited into attacking at Cowpens after forcing his men to march through the night, while the Americans rested, ate well, and were encouraged by their leaders. A miscommunication on the battlefield by the Americans lead to the British getting baited in, and in so doing, the Americans went on to double envelop the British lines, annihilating Tarleton’s force. He returned to England, and ended up becoming a pro slavery advocate in Parliament.

While the movie takes (GREAT) liberties with actual battles, it does an excellent job of showing just what 'War' and tactics/combat was like back then. As a USMC Veteran, you'd never see ME standing tall in an open field, directly before my enemy, both of us shooting back-and-forth till one side overwhelmed the other! Trailers used to be better at letting you know what the movie was going to be about without ruining the movie. Like Ghostbusters Afterlife, if they never shown the little Stay Puff Marshmallow Men, that scene would have been so much spectacular in the theater. At one point in my life, I used to think for a brief moment watching movies blind was a good idea. I don't anymore. A lot of the time, the trailer sets up the movie, especially older movies. And when people don't watch the set up, they miss out on a lot of things. Instead of worrying about what you are supposed to be worrying about, you turn the movie into a mystery and while you trying to figure out that mystery, you miss key aspects. You are a reader. Do you read a book without reading the back of the book first? Movies and books take too much time out of my life. Before I waste my time, I need to know something about a book or movie. I don't want to know much, just enough. I wish they went back to how they used to make Movies and trailers.

8:50 Martin should have send his children to another country while war went on. Considering his estate and sister-in-law's obvious wealth, they would be able to pay for kids to stay in Europe, safe.

The brave younger son is played by the same actor who was the brat in _The Sixth Sense_ who thought he was all that and a bag of potatoes for acting in a TV commercial for cold medicine.

also previews were way worse in the 90s and early 2000's. They literally highlight the entire film from start to finish. Trailers today are way better but I think they still give away too much. They try to change up the order in trailers and some have even left stuff in they cut out to throw people off but if you've seen the trailer you can usually piece together what comes next while watching the film and I dont like that.

Yep you are a country boy 😊 I think the first reaction I've seen where the reactor didn't freak out about little boys being able to shoot. Most don't realize we were hunting before 1st grade.

There are no rules associated with war, sir. The phrase "war crime" is a contradiction. "Crime" implies the rule of law. In a war, law has not been established, as society is in dispute. This is why all human beings must hope to whatever powers they believe in that they never find themselves in one. If you are fighting with rules, I assure you that you are in a rich man's land/cash grab.
