The Peabody Hotel Duck March

The famous ducks at The Peabody Memphis have been marching into the lobby fountain every day for decades, assisted and escorted by The Peabody Memphis Duckmaster. At 11:00 a.m. each day, they descend from their rooftop penthouse (a relatively recent $200,000 addition to this historic landmark hotel) via the center elevator and march through the lobby into the fountain. They spend six hours each day in the fountain in the center of the hotel lobby before ceremoniously returning to their rooftop quarters at 5:00 p.m. each day. Here's how that 11:00 daily duck march looks.

I met the original bellman - his name was Eddie - in 1968 when I was in the navy and had won a weekend stay at the Peabody. I went back in 1974 and again in 1979 and the same guy was still herding the ducks... We've had about 50 ducks on our ranch for years, and every evening, ironically right after they hear taps from the nearby Marine base, all but a few line up in a long formation in front of the open pen door. When we yell GO TO BED!! or - if we're late coming out - as soon as it gets dark, and the night lights come on in the pen, all but five or six will file in and settle down for the night. I like to think the miscreants who stay behind are singing Duck Doo-Wop in five part harmony under the night lights and passing a pint of gin back and forth.... They go in when they are done - quacks me up every time....

We were in Memphis to see Boise State play in the Liberty Bowl, several years ago. The feature performer was Little Richard, who was staying at the Peabody. But both of us were so interested in seeing the ducks, that I didn't even get a picture of the great performer, much less an autograph, only the ducks. Looking back, I'll remember the ducks more than I'll remember his performance at halftime. My wife was more interested in meeting Little Richard, I have to admit, though.

I saw those Peabody ducks on my trip to Memphis. What fun! And the hotel is beautiful!

Is this event the exact one this was filming was 1 of the last times I got to see my grandmother before she passed away in 2019Is this event the exact one this was filyeah that's 1 of the last times I got to see my grandmother before she passed away in 2019 ( She lives in Florida and I live in Tennessee so it's pretty far so we didn't get to see each other much)
