The Pennsic War is the largest role-playing festival in the world. Over 10,000 people gather for a two week long Medieval (Larping) festival filled with massive battles.
We arrived and were immediately getting weird looks. Nobody had ever filmed a documentary at the Pennsic War before. They’ve had news crews a couple of years prior but never a full scale documentary on the entire Pennsic War. That being said, we were so excited to be there.
The first impression we got was that we needed to change clothes. Apparently, because street clothes didn’t exist in the middle ages, you are considered naked for dressing modern. So that was an interesting start. We changed into garb ASAP.
The first thing we filmed was the massive war.
The two sides, each with over 1,000 people met in the middle. You could hear it, see it, and FEEL it. The force from over 2,000 people colliding was shocking. I was so caught up in the moment of filming, I didn’t know how close I was to the action and our media liaison team was pulling me away from the sidelines as the polearms were wildly swinging about. All in all, I knew it would be big but I never considered what it would really be like down in the action (or at least near it). And it was fierce. Indescribable, really.
We proceeded to move through the event at a blistering pace. We only had from 9am to 5pm to film so we hustled, without pausing to think, really.
In fact, a lot of the most memorable moments came in the editing process, reliving our magical experience.

One of the problems that happens when movies recruit reenactors to portray soldiers in movies is the average age, like in reality most soldiers were very young men, kings and generals in history, for example say Takeda Shingen stormed and took a castle when he was 15 years old, in the middle ages the average life expectancy was the same as the average age of reenactors, so when you see american civil war movies and they use reenactors who are all in the 40's 50's and 60's it kind of takes away the point that most of the men dying were barely men, and many were actually just boys. Hell I think you could join the royal navy at 8 at one point in history, as an officer if your family had enough money

You really can't get a true sense of the epic-ness of the field battles from watching a video. The biggest Pennsic I ever attended--in the late 1990s when we had over 14,000 total campers (and over 3,000 fighters on the field at once!) was mind-blowing. You could literally feel the ground shake, and you could feel the concussion wave in the air when the two sides first clashed. It was unlike anything I've ever experienced. I've been in the SCA since 1987. I do fencing, printmaking, papermaking, bookbinding, and I teach all those arts. I've been to over 25 Pennsics, and it is my annual vacation every year I can go. I've only missed about half a dozen over the years, and plan to go back next year, if this whole COVID thing clears up and allows for it.

This looks like an entire city! It's even crazier when you think that in ancient times, countries fielded armies up to and over 100k sometimes. Can you imagine the size of these camps, and the insane logistics it would have required? They would sometimes march halfway across the known world! It's mind-boggling just to think about.
@lolez541
@lolez541 3 жыл бұрын
first of all, almost no countries fielded up 100k or near to that in medieval times. The biggest battles in medieval times had up to 10k each army. And even with 10k armies in the field they would not march halfway across the world trust me.

@@the.pandamonium I remember reading a long time about that the sizes of ancient armies were exaggerated by the people telling the stories. One example i remember was Xerxes having a 1,000,000+ army when he tried to invade Greece, but he most likely had less than 100,000.
@the.pandamonium
@the.pandamonium 3 жыл бұрын
@@lolez541 Yeah, it's hard to believe that there was a million strong army in those times, but it's well documented that for example Alexander the Great had around 100.000 soldiers with him after the battle of gaugamela, and another example would be the battle of Cannae where the Romans fielded an 80 thousand man strong army, and this wasn't even Rome at its peak. Another note to take is in the examples I mentioned these are armies assembled for actual battle, while Rome for example had a total army size of about 500.000 men during its peak. The medieval times, at least in europe, didn't see these army sizes primarily because of the change in the system of governance with small feudal lords as opposed to big centralized empires like Rome and ancient macedonia

When you think about it, we are truly living in the strangest period of history. Wars throughout the world were carried out like this for a major part of human history, in which you and your allies fight in large formations so you can see the enemies and they can see you, then the battle starts and you have to go close into a more 'intimate' melee range, and with every attack you can see the effect it has on the enemy. Then fast forward to our time, the only period where wars are carried out most of the time without really seeing the enemy with eye vision, soldiers shooting or suppressing enemy position is the norm, formations are smaller and more dynamic, and long range bombardment is preferable.

After reading the comments I would like to clarify a few things. First, there are over 10, 000 that show up at Pennsic. I would say around 1,000-2,000 actually do heavy weapons fighting. To even be on the battle field you have to have an authorization card which proves you know how to protect yourself and take a hit. Also all of the armor has to be inspected and signed off on before you can fight. I have been going since Pennsic 32. The weapons are all made of rattan and covered in duct tape to make them look like steel. When you do get hit good it hurts like a SOB. Broken bones do happen at times. I loved the documentary. Keep up the good work. Hope to see you all in 2022 if it isn't cancelled for a third year. Slainte!

I fought in Pennsic 25 (God I'm getting old!) We were 3000 fighters on the field, out of 10 000 participants. Well, check-in stopped counting at 10 000 because there were not supposed to be more than that in a tent encampment. Someting about, if it was bigger than that it would count as a town and need its own emergency services.

He participated in the first Pennsic War and attended every war but one from the event's founding until his passing. His charming personality, erudition, humility, and creative involvement in the Pennsic War will leave a big hole in the event with his passing, and I hope that he will receive a worthy and fitting tribute at this year's war, as befits an honourable knight of such standing. American history is shit. All anyone knows about is the american civil war and their role in ww1 and ww2 which were both mainly in europe. Sorry but you will have to wait at least another 500 years to be able to have enough for people to roleplay about on.
