For real, it's a perspective-altering quote. it seems obvious, it seems like something we should think about anytime we give our opinion on the Internet, but the truth of the matter is that we don't typically think about the impact beyond the moment we exist in that comment section or that take down video or whatever it is... and we SHOULD!

What I wish I'd known when doing mine (20 years ago) is that they DO NOT determine the rest of your life. They influence what you do NEXT. You can change direction and switch careers and get more or different qualifications whenever you like once you're out of school/college. It takes time and money to do so, but these exams are just the end of your current chapter. The rest of the book is entirely up to you.

I absolutely destroyed my health with stress during A Levels, which is extremely not worthwhile given how little impact they have had on the rest of my academic life. Make sure to take care of yourself, take plenty of breaks, and spend time with the people close to you. Good luck with everything!
@tygerstripes3752
@tygerstripes3752 Ай бұрын
@jedisalsohere I'm in the U.S., so I looked up A Levels. Sounds like you can choose to do them all at once or break them into two tests. For me, two tests would better than one, in terms of doing my best. My other test-taking advice is to take all the time allotted for taking the test, every minute. Go through the test with care, and first answer all the questions that you are certain you know the answers to. If you are given paper and pen, note down the numbers of the questions you skip, so you can go back to review them. If this is multiple choice, your first instinct for an answer is usually right. But it really pays to go through the entire test, because sometimes other questions will give you the answer to a previous question, or clarify it for you. You got this.

Hank, I was one of those kids! I was homeschooled most of my life and taught Biblical literalism. My science textbook had an *entire chapter* dedicated to explaining away climate change as a liberal hoax. I never learned math and I never learned real history until I found Crash Course. If it weren't for you and the rest of the team, I'd be in a cult. I'm in college now, and I feel confident in my education thanks to you. As a teacher who has worked at schools that give teachers no individual budgets and some that have a “no subscriptions” policy when it comes to spending their curriculum/material budgets, THANK YOU FOR KEEPING THINGS FREE. The absolute dismay I felt when Mystery Science, my go-to beloved thing when I had to teach science, moved to a school/district-only subscription model was immense. I have taken to making burner emails every year to use free trials because it is a resource that supplements the curriculum really well and has hands on activities that don’t require me to get my hands on stuff like 10 types of soil and different colored flower pots like the curriculum does. My school refuses to pay for it because they don’t like doing subscriptions unless it’s a district-mandated curriculum everyone has to use, no matter how many times they’ve specifically praised me using it in my lessons and how organized and engaging my lessons are when it’s involved. So not just for the students whose grades you’ve helped, but also for the teachers, thank you so much for keeping it accessible.

Toward the end of 2020 amidst the pandemic, I unfortunately wound up having to live out of my car and started watching crash course sociology, psychology, and history videos to pass the time. Through that, I noticed there were more of these Green brothers who had impressed me with their ability to communicate interesting topics in an intelligent yet easy-to-follow format, so I began watching Vlogbrothers as well, eventually choosing to binge the entirety of their content from the beginning on to today. Although I am comparatively new to Nerdfighteria, I am so proud to call myself a Nerdfighter. I have so much respect for this community and it’s seemingly endless integrity and kindness. Crash course, vlogbrothers, the project for awesome, dear Hank & John, the anthrpocene reviewed, sci show, and everything complexly adjacent has helped me through the roughest part of my life yet. I cannot describe how grateful I am for everything I have learned and will continue to learn. I only wish I was able to do more for this community than like and subscribe. I was homeschooled, and I was learning on the internet way before Crash Course came around, from random folk in IRC chats to physics bulletin boards to painful arguments about evolution with people who had no obligation to put up with my ignorance and did so patiently anyway. What Crash Course provided for me was to knit that mishmash of semi-education together into a much more cohesive understanding of the world. I am extraordinarily poor, and extraordinarily grateful. This video explains exactly why I've tried to steer away from the more negative, toxic side of internet communication in recent years. At least 90% of the time, you're not actually helping anybody by "taking down" people on the internet. You're just feeding other people's anger and perpetuating this endless cycle of fuming in place, where nobody actually tries to get up and fix the problems themselves. There is a place for negative content and communication on the internet, but so often it misses the most crucial part: what are we going to do about it?

Hank, it's not just crash course it's everything you do, truly. You are one of my biggest inspirations, one of the reasons I'm becoming a scientist and want to work in science education. Hopefully in a year I'll have my biology degree and I wouldn't be where I am now without you and all the wonderful people working with you. Thank you for everything:)

I think this is a good point about why journalism is important, like putting that dislike and its valid reasons into context for a community and making sure people see through a grift is important, and it leaves individuals free to pursue their own positive creation while still remaining aware of facts.

the legality of homeschooling baffles me as a non american. i get that there are exceptions (disability, specific risks of certain areas, high performers) that could easily be fulfilled with more flexible options such as digital tools, other school systems, but the fact that parents can casually pull their kids from a global curriculum and teach them whatever, keep them from interacting with peers, remove their access to science and diversity and, to make matters worse, teach with zero credentials, is wild. it should be illegal (like it is here), i can't believe people in the us get away with it

One of my best friends from college was homeschooled, and she turned out just fine. She's currently an engineer. One of my coworkers homeschools his kids, and talks about teaching them not to trust experts and scientists. The fact that it's such a mixed bag is very troubling.

Subsidiarity, for one thing. For another, there's a whole list of problems with government schools pointed out by teacher John Taylor Gatto. I wasn't home schooled and neither are my kids, but I could go on.
@Stettafire
@Stettafire Ай бұрын
My main issue with the whole discussion is people kinda disregard the exceptions. Like, there are a LOT of disabled people out there who do badly due to inaccessible schools. In most parts of the world parents still need to teach certain elements of the curriculum. But the absolute hate for homeschooling I keep seeing based on a minority of poor experiences (which really are more of a product or poor legislation in the US, not homeschooling by itself) is kinda wild to me. Not to mention kinda ablist
@lorenabpv
@lorenabpv Ай бұрын
@@Stettafirethere absolutely should be better solutions for disabled kids (accessible schools, transportation, special ed, tutoring) that don't leave them at the mercy of often unqualified family members. literally the idea of a parent having the freedom to teach the kid what they deem acceptable is insane to me as a non american

A-Levels are British Courses where you take 3-4(5 if your insane) subjects in a deep dive for 2 years from 16-18. At the end of the 2 years(right now unfortunately ) there are massive national standardised tests. University offers depend on the results of these exams.
@SamAronow
@SamAronow Ай бұрын
Entirely on the results of exams? What about school grades, entrance exams, extracurricular activities, application essay, interview, legacy, and affirmative action?
@JBrak
@JBrak Ай бұрын
@@SamAronow You apply for up to 5 university through a universal application in the autmn term(september - December). Part of this application is a personal statement where you can show these kind of things off this is probably the closest thing to application essay but you only do one for all universities and this is the chance to show off extracurriculars. A small minority of uni's will have an entrance exam and interview but the majority do not. The universities then decide wheater they want to offer you a place based of this information and your predicted grades and they tell you this usually between january-april. This offer will usually be conditional on meeting these grades in the summer exams. So if you miss the grades in your a-level you dont have the place anymore.

0:39 A levels are a standard exam that you typically take at 18 (17 if your birthday is towards the end of academic year) that you will have studied for 2 years at college for, in between leaving school and starting university. It stands for Advanced Level which was the next level up from Ordinary Level (O levels were later named General Certificate of Secondary Education - GCSE). A levels are where you start to specialise in your education, typically taking 3 or 4 subjects. Though I did 5. Most people will do 7-10 GCSEs and will then do just one subject for their degree.
