I read someplace that a man in the woods with a knife will live well. A man in the woods with an axe will live like a king. I use Estwing, Husquavarna, and Man Made axes. Someday, I will own a Gransfors.

I recently bought the gransfors carpenter’s axe- the same length as the small forest but with a straight haft and face. Amazing things, like a knife, a chisel and an axe all combined into one perfectly weighted and packable tool!

When I split logs like that, I drive the head in enough to keep it from slipping out, then just pound down with the axe and log on the solid surface I'm using to split on. A twist of the wrist as it hits usually does it.... The Small forest Axe is the perfect size for bushcraft; smaller than a full axe, but much more useful than a hatchet.

I have the same axe Bjorn! I couldn’t agree more. I felled a large standing dead maple on my last interior trip with it and it made for some wonderful firewood and additional campfire benches. Thanks for the video!

I use Fiskars Norden N10 myself. Its basic features are basically the same but the pro is that its more durable but the con is that you cant replace the handle would it break. It has 25 year warranty tho :) The looks and the handcrafting really makes the Forest Axe special, almost "heirloomy" compared to Fiskars mass product axes.

I found a wetterlings at a hardware store in N.Ont Canada... So I had to buy it... Not much for European cutting tools here... figured it was as comparable to yours...been very happy with it. It compliments my mora knives which is my EDC. You just acquired a new subscriber.. ATB . .

I own three Gransfors Bruk axes and love them all ! Small forest axe a carving axe and the hatchet. I would use my home crafted buck saw for larger logs.

I used to love walking on a windy day. Just made me feel soooo alive. I grew up with tics and they are getting worse now where I live in BC. I have seen bull moose almost bald and frantic. A sad sight for sure. We will sometimes dispatch them to put them out of their misery.We need a good spell of -40 + to slow them down. The axe is a perfect piece for camp or building anything for sure. It throws a fne chip bud.A dual purpose axe I have really yet to find. That one has a happy medium to it. Dear friend, I think you'd love this axe. I do, and I think it's just the right size for a grown man (but maybe a bit too small for women and kids). It's not too heavy, but still cuts and splits well. Those ticks are getting worse, and yes, I have heard of those poor animals who get very sick and loose their fur. It's terrible.

Awesome axe! That design with the handle being narrow is excellent. That is a big problem I've had with mass produced commercial axes. Also, nice seeing you've got a guardian pokemon. Is he the guy you hired to chase off hunters? ;)

A pokemon, I see! No, I hired a little, invisible gnome for that, haha. Yes, the handle being narrower than the head a few inches at the top is important, but you're right, mass produced axes are often not made with that in mind.

I'm with you on the safety aspect and the least amount of effort works. I own several axes and they are almost all Gransfurs axes. only cut myself once fortunately. Someone once told me never to swing an axe when your angry or tired. You might get hit by it.

Nice review and demonstrations. I, too, have Gransfors-Bruks axes and would not be persuaded to give them up. Here in the US, there are some who attempt to denigrate the GBA axes because of their high cost, but their analysis is always misguided. I have the small forest axe and it is perfect for what it was designed for; limbing fallen trees and preparing firewood. It is not designed as a felling axe and would wear you out if you were to undertake that task. If you goal is to build a cabin and you need numerous logs of large diameter, then use the proper cutting tools for that job; not a small forest axe. Your demonstrations clearly showed the proper use of the small forest axe; although Felix Immler uses wedges to split larger logs. That is probably more efficient than batoning the axe. Still, that is a small difference in technique. In the final analysis, the GBA small forest axe is superior because it is a great design, outstanding steel, extremely well made, and holds a sharp edge longer. Thanks for your excellent review.

No it is the opposite. This guy gets a new axe and goes out filming with it. A good review would be someone who has used the axe for a long time. And it is very obvious that this fool isnt used to using an axe. Which is like letting someone who just got his driving licence to test a ferrari.

@@magnuskarlsson2924 clearly you’re no expert in life. Are you 13 years old?! I have used many tools for 45 years. Let’s take chisels for example. Because I have used them for 45 years I can tell within the first hour if it is a good or bad chisel. It’s very very easy to discern when you have years of experience. Bought mine almost 30 y ago. A true work horse. But remember to hit the logg closer to the edge, not in the middle. Then it split much more esy. And go by the natural split. That logg wouldn't need batoning at all.

Bjorn Andreas Bull-Hansen I know right? People need to realize tools such as machetes, knives, axes, and guns etc.. are fun but not toys and can lead to fatal injuries. That's why I personally do not use axes that are double bit or have the pick on the back of it. I think they have higher risk of injury, but are nice collector pieces.

Hi, Bjorn, I took my new GBA Small Forest Axe through, I reacheduder my leg for the maskto my daughters several weeks ago, so I could cut up some firewood so my grandkids could roast hot dogs and marshmallows. I put its mask under my leg and cut up a bunch of firewood for the fire pit. When I was through I reached under my leg for the mask and it was gone. I looked all around but it was no where to be found and then I remembered Lucy, her dog, loved leather. I looked for Luch and saw the remains of the mask in her mouth. I finally was able to get it away from her but it was ruined. I will be damned if I will spend $50 for a new one. I got two generic masks from AMAZON for $16. It had so welt but I could remedy that. I took a quarter inch piece of 10# leather, cut it to fit the end of the new mask and after I got it fitted I glued it in. Now, the end of the axe is resting on this thick piece of leather instead of against the end which was riveted together. I could have removed the rivets and put a welt between the two pieces of leather but that is extra work. The new mask fits as snug as a June bug in its new mask. I will also use her Council Tools Boys axe the next time I want to cut some firewood for a fire😢

Just a tip for you and jour doggie for the summer:-) For the tics..I warm coconut oil in hand and stoke my cats and horse over fur..never a tic on them anymore. Myself I use cocnut oil as skin moisturizer..specially on legs and back and neck..same never a tic on myself either. Best tip of hter day:-)

As someone who did a truly tremendous amount of wood splitting with ax many years ago as a young man...I'll say that the easiest and most reliable way to attack a splitting job where the ax is a bit smaller and lighter than one would like is to begin by splitting off small pieces from the side, instead of trying to go down the center. In this case where you did try to go down the center, after the first couple of hits, with a good crack showing, you would have been better off continuing your attack from the side of the piece by allowing it to lay on its side, hitting tentatively at first, perhaps, until you found the spot where you could easily extend the crack.

I have the SFA and its larger sibling (by 6" and 1 pound) Scandinavian Forest axe. That 6" and 1 pound buys you at least twice the cutting speed and a very noticeable reach improvement. The SFA is ok for day hikes, very long treks where one pound makes a big difference, or if you bring a saw too.. but if you're building anything at all, a shelter, many cuts, or limbing a downed tree you'll rapidly appreciate the Scandi. Look at it this way, which is more work.. carrying one more pound, or swinging the little SFA 2-3 times more per cut?

I would say you try the Scandinavian one. It may be 20% heavier but either of them won't fit in a normal pack ( not that you want to fit it inside a 70L one either). The Scandinavian is a much better splitter, to be honest you could use it to build a cabin because if it's broader / heavier head and longer handle. The Scandinavian will bite much more on cutting and it's a real 2 handed Axe just because it has 14 CM more length and a slight heavier head. SFA is very good don't get me wrong, but I personally prefer Scandinavian unless I don't do a lot of 1 Handed swinging.

who would give you a hard time.. the upside down thing works good on some wood. That spruce seemed to be a very tight piece of wood. i am convinced that axe is the best one for the woodsman. It is a really good overall axe... That axe will carve... that is the axe i am saving up for. i am completely amazed that in this day and age that people still leave things behind. Thanks again J

I nought myself a Hultafors hand axe last week which arrived yesterday. On the attached label, it has a picture or the axe being struck by a hammer to split a piece of wood, but the picture has a big cross through it. Now thats iron against iron and makes perfect sense to me. But I really cannot see it applying to using a piece of wood to drive it through your chosen log beceause that is wood against iron and so long as you dont miss and hit the handle / haft, then I cannot see it causing any harm to the axe. I did contemplate buy a larger axe but I figured that I also carry a Silky 240 saw and as such the axe would only really get used for splitting wood and maybe roughly shaping it for projects too. For a long time, I considered a large knife like a parang or similar sized blade and the more I thought about what I would actually use it for, the more I questioned myself, "Why dont you just use and axe for that task"? Each to his own for the choice of tools in the field, but as much as I like big knives, I feel an axe strapped to the outside of my pack will attract less unwanted attention from the police etc than a large knife. And at the end of the day, who wants to stand there trying to argue the case for why they are carrying what the UK law now states is a dangerous weapon?!?! Yeah wood on metals A ok I think steven edholm put it best that "whenever someone says never my bullshit detector goes off" and its still always worth learning to do a bit of cross cutting with the axe it can help keep you fit if nothing else. I personally enjoy the bahco rucksack axe with the slightly heavier head at 1 3/4lbs. Yeah our laws are whack.

Great video. How does Hultafors compare to granfors ? The reason I'm asking is because we don't have granfors here in my country. (Singapore) but we do have hultafor
